ZORN, JOHN - Duras: Duchamp (1997)

...pensive atmosphere without disrupting the compositional base of the song. Despite never really doing much (at least not on the surface), Duras never gets boring. It has enough mild avant-garde elements to keep the listener from turning his (or her) attention somewhere else, but these are not dominant as they are in much of Zorns other works....

CD Review: Deborah Crooks Water to the Ashes

2008-10-15 19:36:48 by delarue in Lucid Culture

...pensive, slow-to-midtempo rock with subtlety and good taste. Crooks voice evokes Chrissie Hyndes late period, able to shift from a gentle, knowing murmur to a soaring wail in a split-second. The music defies association with any era other than perhaps this one: no 70s folkie-blues clichés, no 80s synthesizer schlock, no boring 90s trip-hop...

CD Review: Devi Get Free

2008-10-24 19:56:32 by delarue in Lucid Culture

...pensive and apprehensive, slowly crescendoing to a long, thoughtful, bluesy solo reminiscent of Robin Trower when he was good way back in his Procol Harum years. Its followed by a funny musical quote which wouldnt be fair to give away. In case you might assume that the cover of Runaway here is a throwaway, dont its got the best solos on the...

CD Review: Smoldering Ashes Nervous Constellations

2008-11-18 19:42:54 by delarue in Lucid Culture

...pensive sensibility, but none of the affectations. This collaboration between Oklahoma musicians Veronica Ashe and Troy Troutman and 17 Pygmies guitarist Jeff Brennman and drummer Dirk Doucette bridges the gap between 80s goth like This Mortal Coil and Dead Can Dance and nouveau psychedelia inthesense that its ambience is warm and draws you...

The Great Divide.

...pensive bow whorls and the whole ensemble soon follows with Siwula vibrato and kit ranging courtesy of Hugo Manuschevich. It is a Novemberish thing with swirling winds rustling dry leaves in little eddies with storm fronts approaching and lots of ensemble churning in juxtaposed vortexes. Mr. Zinman makes his part an exposition in miniature of...

Elysian Fields - Bleed Your Cedar (1996)

2007-08-21 09:55:00 by Kevin Sartori in Psychotic Leisure Music

...pensive and dark sound. Most music journalists compare them to Mazzy Star , but Elysian Fields are much more dynamic, musical, and are, frankly, a lot better. I became aware of this fascinating band when Jennifer Charles appeared for two duets with Tod A. on Firewater 's 1996 debut Get Off the Cross, We Need the Wood for the Fire Universal...

Pete Teo - Television

2007-12-24 01:12:21 by Editor in Muzik Reviews

...pensive storytelling. I think the best way to put this music into a specific genre would be to say that it is an entertaining form of alternative-folk. This is an art form expressed from an individuals soul; I could feel that in this music. As I mentioned in my first review, the man is a poet, a true artisan developing his craft in every...

Nest "Nest"

...pensive and uneasy, much like Neon City. Given that both Totland and Roberts are pianists, the piano is a primary source instrument on Nest. There may be a lot of piano-centric releases around at the moment, but Totland and Roberts just do it really, really well. Also like Neon City there is enough variety here to prevent the EP from becoming...
