...ionally included are some truly emotionally uplifting melodies, with beautiful vocal performance and top-notch musicianship. The only setback is the obnoxious wind instrument that belongs more in a slow pop song than a celtic rock album, but hey, who am I to make that final call? Listen and decide for yourself if the additional instruments...

...Iona over a dozen years ago, I fell into a fairly common habit: pigeon-holing the band as Celtic-folk with Christian overtones without really paying closer attention, liking it a lot but nothing to lose ones proggy head over. The 2000 album Open Sky was the first wake up and smell the java slap , suddenly obliging a closer analysis and then...

...Iona more than fulfills that need. Their sound has what I like to describe as a depth of field that captivates and draws me into their mist-shrouded world every time I listen to them. To consider them boring would be a mistake because it would indicate that you arent paying close attention to the myriad of different instruments that are...

...IONA. I've never before sat down and read lyrics that had such an affect on me as those written for this album.I have said before that lyrics really aren't that important to me.Give me great music and i'll be happy. Not surprisingly the best quote i read about this band was from our own tszirmay who said IONA is more spiritual than religious....

IONA - The Circling Hour (2006) [rated 3/5 by Kobaia]

...Iona's 'The Circling Hour' also for the drums of Frank Van Essen are mixed on the top of Ionas music - almost too top covering much of other instruments and minor details by stealing the attention. Anyhow, he plays well and his drumming is joy to listen, but here the limits are pushed almost too far. Dont take this too seriously because I'm...

IONA - Woven Cord (1999) [rated 5/5 by Theo Verstrael]

Iona has become one of the mst intersting bands I know. Their intricate combination of tranquil musical passages with outbursts of guitar and Uillean pipes are, in my opinion, very attractive. But sometimes the song writing seems to be a little unclear, as if melodies and chords come t a point where it is far from obvious which way to head for....

...Iona out just because Im not completely knocked out by The Circling Hour What I crave about this group isnt simply their inspired propensity to manifest the ethereal but their total, unflinching embracing of it as they did on the sublime The Book of Kells and, to a large extent, on the exquisite Beyond These Shores. But groups naturally...

...Iona taking a progressive approach to Christian music, but this seems very rare. The one problem with this album is that it is a bit long, without varying an awful lot, but it still does what it's supposed to do, create atmosphere, and one does not have to be listening intently to appreciate the effects of this album. Since there is so little...

...Ionas Open Sky album. Okay, so I added that third definition on my own. I couldnt help myself. Its the most descriptive word I can use for this glorious CD. As I have written in other reviews of their works, this group creates music that is different in many, many ways from other forms of progressive music and requires the listener to slow...
