Thanks to Steve Kiviat for passing along some sad news: Chick Hall Sr., longtime owner of P.G. County roadhouse Chick Hall’s Surf Club, died Tuesday. The release from the Washington Area Music Association:

On Tuesday, November 18, 2008, Chick Hall Sr. passed away. He was a musician of enormous talent and a humble man.

Chick Hall Sr. was a country-jazz guitar virtuoso who made Armed Forces Radio records with Glenn Miller. Around 1953, he began playing with his own band, the Chick Hall Trio. After playing for a few years at the Surf Club, on Bladensburg Road in Colmar Manor, Chick decided that he’d like to make the club his musical home, and so he bought the place in 1955 and began playing there 6 nights a week.

The Surf Club transitioned from Jazz to Country Music, and many of the country greats visited, including Jim Reeves and Lefty Frizzell. Patsy Cline sang her heart out at the Surf Club. Jimmy Dean, Roy Clark, Charlie Daniels, dropped by to jam. It was around this time that the Colmar Manor/Cottage City area was in it’s heyday, with numerous clubs such as the Crossroads, Rusty Cabins (which turned into Burt Motley’s), the Dixie Pig, Angelo’s, the Wheel, and Basin Street, mostly all offering live music 7 days a week. There was always a party going on.

Things change gradually. Chick got married early on and had two sons - Chick, Jr. and Chris. In 1975, a developer made a good offer on the Surf Club, so Chick sold the club property, and built another one up the street at 4711 Kenilworth Ave (at the corner of Kenilworth Ave and Crittendon Street), He is survived by his wife of 67 or so years, and his kids Chick and Chris.

The video for "Weird Fishes" was created by American Tobias Stretch and will debut exclusively on MySpace Music, much like Clement Picon's video for "Reckoner" did in late September. Both Stretch and Picon were among the four winners of aniBoom's In Rainbows Animated Music Video Contest. The other two winners — videos from Germany and France for "15 Step" and "Videotape," respectively — will debut next week.

And Radiohead vocalist/spokesman Thom Yorke is so excited about the results of this contest (which, of course, was stamped with the band's official seal of approval) that he's going all Yoda on us: "The aniBoom video competition, totally blown me away it has," said Yorke in a statement released this morning.

So as much as it pains me to say it, keep your eyes and ears tuned in over at MySpace, and then let us know what you think of the new vid!

A traditional measure of when a radio programme has impact is is when someone listening says they had to pull over, or stay in a parking lot, or miss their bus -- because what they heard was so riveting/moving/hilarious/bizarre that they couldn't move 'til it was over.

Such was the case with last week's edition of What Tom Got Wrong, a new weekly Friday feature on Radio 2 Morning (6 a.m.-10 a.m.) Last week, what Tom got wrong was not putting the wrong emphasis on a word like kilometer (KiloMETRE? kilOMetre? Can never remember), something that really gets up some people's noses. No, it was about a racier mistake. Here's what Anna Ringstrom, a listener/Blog reader had to say:

"Firstly, I'd like to comment on last Friday's 'What Tom Got Wrong,' especially the piece regarding Tom mistakenly using the word 'testicle' instead of 'tentacle,' while talking about the octopus. One of the funniest segments of radio banter I have heard in a long, long while. It goes in the category of 'radio so funny you have to pull the car over to clear the tears from your eyes lest you cause a traffic accident."

Today, Part Two of this edition of What Tom Got Wrong, when Quirks & Quarks' Bob MacDonald drops by to answer the octopus question. (As in, um, do they have em, or not?)

Also don't forget to tune in today for the conclusion of What Do You Think Gordon Lightfoot Should Write About?

GUEST POST by Kyle Bylin of indie label 50 Entertainment

In Malcolm Gladwell’s book, The Tipping Point, he describes the levels at which the momentum of change becomes unstoppable. Expanding on the notion that once an idea hits it's threshold there's a point when it proceeds to spread from its niche market origins and spills over into the masses. Gladwell states, "Ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread like viruses do."

The success story of Staind can be traced back to a chain of events which lead to a moment called The Tipping Point of The Ballad. Beyond their early fans, they were still a relatively unknown band upon the release of their second album Dysfunction in April of 1999. The highest chart ranking it received was #74. It wasn't until October 31 on the Family Values Tour, seven months later, that the path of the band changed forever.

Ten minutes before going on stage, Lewis decided to play the song “Outside.” What happened that night in Biloxi, Mississippi Lewis later recalls as, “An accidental phenomenon.” Up until this performance the lyrics were often changed, but there...

in front of thousands, he finished them while he sang. This live acoustic version was picked up by radio stations across the country and the music video saw frequent airings on MTV2, becoming an instant hit through both mediums. The compilation released in May 2000 featured “Outside” as a bonus track and went on to become gold-certified.

The buzz generated by the live acoustic version built the perfect bridge between Dysfunction and their follow up Break The Cycle by successfully introducing new fans to the band a few months before the album was released. When Break The Cycle hit shelves on May 22, 2001 and it sold 716,000 copies it's first week. By week fifteen, the album had sold nearly 2.9 million copies and went onto spill into the masses by selling more then 7 million copies in the US alone.

Gladwell goes onto describe that there are three rules which govern these types of epidemics. In The Law of The Few he notes that the attainment of a tipping point requires the intervention of a number of influential people which he classifies as Connectors, Mavens, and Salesmen. Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit, a Connector, had a special gift for bringing the world together. After discovering Staind, he signed them to Flip which gave them a platform to launch their career. Napster (The Net), Television (MTV2), and Radio DJ's played the role of Mavens, the people we rely upon to connect us with new information. The Salesmen, the staff of Flip's parent company Elekra, were the charismatic people with powerful negotiation skills who put Staind in front of the world.

In The Stickiness Factor, he examines the specific content of the message that makes it memorable and have impact. Expanded upon by Dan and Chip Heath in their 2007 release Made To Stick, the brothers explored the principle of SUCCESs (Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credible, Emotional, and Stories.) “Outside” was Simple because it was at the core of the idea of what Staind was about. Unexpected due to the heaviness of their previous single “Mudshovel.” Credible on Fred Durst's endorsement. Most of all, the Story of Staind, four guys being discovered at a bar gig and getting signed, hits at the very heart of the romanticized notion of how “making it” in the music industry is defined.

Last, but not least, in The Power of Context Gladwell says, "Epidemics are sensitive to the conditions and circumstances of the times and places in which they occur." With Napster at the height of it's popularity, mass-radio play still thriving, the rise of alternative/nu-metal movement, and major label budgets still intact, it becomes quite clear that the environment which Staind arrived in was more then receptive and quite likely to adopt the idea of behind “Outside” and a band of their nature.

As Aaron Lewis begins to strum his guitar, the crowd in the background roars, and his voice projects, “And you, can bring me to my knees,” you can feel the impact of years gone by and the burdens they bear. In the space of just under six minutes, Lewis engages you with every word. In reflection of this story, what other occurrences can you think of when a ballad caused a tipping point for an artist?

Here's mix of Public Enemy tunes that Pipomixes did back in 2007 but only posted on his blog this week. If you're a PE fan I'm sure you'll love this mix and if you're a little younger and haven't really experience PE's music download this and appreciate the greatness that is Public Enemy.

"Since many of you seem to be enjoying some of my older mixes, I thought I'd post this Public Enemy mix that I completed in the summer of 2007. I remember seeing PE perform "Harder Than You Think" on Jimmy Kimmel Live a year and a half ago, and I said to myself that PE still had "it." It's not 1988 all over again, but I do feel that every deejay owes PE a tribute mix at some point in their lives. Hope you all enjoy the mix."
- Pipomixes

Pipomixes
Mixing The Enemy (2007) |32 MB|

Show em what you got
Night of the living baseheads
Bring the noise
Nightrain (pete rock remix)
Nightrain
Fight the power
Cant trust it
Don't believe the hype
Brothers gonna work it out
Welcome to the terrordome
Rebel without a pause
Terminator X to the edge of panic
Chuck D interview
Harder than you think
Shut em down (pete rock remix)
Shut em down
Give it up
Black steel in the hour of chaos
He Got game

http://www.zshare.net/audio/51466134aaae492d/

Source:
pipomixes.blogspot.com
