You know when you go to a concert for an artist whose previous albums you love, but whose newest release you haven’t had a chance to digest yet? Inevitably they mostly play songs from that new album and just a few crumbs of the old stuff. The opposite happened at Wednesday night’s Beck show — the first of his three-night engagement at the United Palace Theater up in Washington Heights. Sure, I own and love all of his albums (well, I’m not a big Sea Change fan, but the songs work when I shuffle them with less suicide-inducing tracks). But I’m thoroughly hooked on Modern Guilt — the gorgeous Beach Boys-esque harmonies at the beginning of “Chemtrails” and the peppy surf beat of “Gamma Ray” make me a very happy girl. So when everyone’s favorite strawberry-blond Scientologist shoved all of his new songs to the back of the line, I was kinda bummed.

Then again, I shouldn’t complain. Who doesn’t love a little “Loser” and “Devil’s Haircut”? It seemed like the set list was designed to please everyone: the old-school fans, the people who just know the radio hits, the Sea Change depressives. (It also seems to be the same set list as his Hollywood Bowl show two weeks ago, though we didn’t get the cool orchestral accompaniment.) And I think Beck wanted to please himself, too, and kept those old hits fresh for himself by rearranging them. I particularly dug “Nicotine and Gravy” turned into a rock song with interludes of great thrashing guitars.

After seeing his dinner-party interlude during the Guero tour, and his marionette show at Bonnaroo in 2006, I was looking forward to a similar gimmicky diversion. The backdrop of pretty LED patterns probably would have sufficed if I’d been one of the members of the audience whose, er, concert-enhancing substance consumption inspired theater management to keep the house lights on for a good portion of the show. The wackiest Beck and company got was when they gathered at the front of the stage with little samplers and large headphones to play “Hell Yes” and “Black Tambourine.”

At last, 45 minutes into the show, he played “Modern Guilt,” “Walls” and “Chemtrails” — all performed rather faithfully to the album versions. And in the encore, there was a booty-shaking rendition of “Gamma Ray” that was worth the wait. Here’s hoping that in another couple of years I’ll be complaining that he always reverts to his 2008 classics.

Kiss guitarist Paul Stanley banked millions of dollars last year. Not from touring, but from his paintings. For the past year, Stanley has been touring his original artwork and will open a new exhibit this Saturday at a Washington, DC area gallery. “It’s been terrifically successful,” Stanley tells Rolling Stone. “And the great thing is I never expected it. I paint for myself. If no one else likes it at least I do. I have never approached things to please other people in both art and music.”

No stranger to art, Stanley studied at New York’s High School of Art and Music, the inspiration for the film Fame. “My best subject must have been lunch,” he says. “I didn’t get along with authority and it turned me off art.” Failing art class, he dropped painting for music. Years later, while going through a painful divorce in 2000, Stanley found solace in painting and picked up his brushes again. Now, he clearly takes pleasure in knowing his art reaches different crowds — both Kiss fans and art collectors.

“I see people at the gallery who will never go to a Kiss show and people at a Kiss show that will never go to the gallery. And then there are some people in between.” His pieces, mostly four-by-five foot acrylics done in bold colors with intense strokes, brought in $2 million last year. His originals fetch as much as $70,000, with limited-edition prints going to $1,000. Even Kiss co-founder Gene Simmons, known more for his shrewd business practices than for his eye for art, bought one of Stanley’s works titled “Statue of Liberty.” “The monetary aspect validates it that much more for him,” Stanley says.

Meanwhile, Kiss has been gigging consistently for its legions of fans known as the Kiss Army. Fresh off a 30-show Kiss European tour, where the band sometimes played six shows a week, Stanley says the group is fit and finely tuned these days. “The band has never been better, never looked better,” he says, adding that Kiss is planning a 35th anniversary tour this spring.

Last time we heard from emo pop-punk act A Bird A Sparrow, the band was getting all defensive in the comments section after I compared them and other area emo pop-punk bands of their ilk to gremlins.

Now the band is back in the news: This time, it's taking seven other acts on in a contest put on by Denny's (yes, the breakfast joint). And, should the band win, its members will get free Denny's for the entirety of their next tour. Which, actually, is a pretty sweat deal, to be honest--who can say no to free All-American Slams? Not me, for one.

And, turns out, A Bird A Sparrow is actually doing pretty OK in the competition, thank you very much. As I write this, the band's in second place in the vote-based competition, just a few points behind the Washington, D.C., act You, Me, And Everyone We Know. And, yes, that means they're doing way better than Fort Worth's Oh, Sleeper is doing, down in last place. (Only 0.3 percent of the vote? Yeesh.)

I guess the bratty emo punk thing is still en vogue with America's teens.

It probably helps, too, that the song the band offered Denny's to put up for free download, "We Own The Night" is pretty much tailor-made for MTV licensing.

Anyway, lord knows these kids need all the help they can get when it comes to filling out their skinny jeans. Vote for 'em here if you feel so inclined. Or vote for Oh, Sleeper. They could use the help, too. Obviously. --Pete Freedman

Eric Hutchinson, one of the latest artists to be featured in VH1’s high-profile “You Oughta Know” program, will kick off a headlining tour on November 7th, 2008. Charlotte Sometimes and Matt Hires will open on the tour, which will conclude December 13th with a show at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom.

An exclusive iTunes edition of ‘Sounds Like This’, Hutchinson’s debut album, will be released on October 14th, 2008. It will feature two bonus tracks - “OK, It’s Alright With Me” and “You Don’t Have To Believe Me” - that Hutchinson recorded earlier this year while guesting on NPR’s “World Cafe” - plus the official video for lead single “Rock & Roll.”

Lensed by U.K. director David Mullett (Babyshambles, Lucky Soul, Vinyl), the video is currently being played on VH1, MTVu and LOGO. “Rock & Roll,” which is a Top 10 hit at AAA radio, will be released as a digital single October 14th. It was featured in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 as well as the film’s soundtrack, ad and viral campaign. Hutchinson, who recently performed on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” has been confirmed for appearances on “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and “The Bonnie Hunt Show.”

Tapped by MSN’s “Ones To Watch” program for the month of October and as an “Artist to Watch” by Clear Channel’s “NEW!” program for November, Hutchinson was hailed as “a new pop sensation” by Entertainment Weekly and has also appeared in the pages of USA Today, The Washington Post, Wired, the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune.

Hutchinson, who has been on the road this year with OneRepublic, Missy Higgins, Marié Digby, Ingrid Michaelson and Blind Melon, heads out on tour with Jack’s Mannequin on October 14th. ‘Sounds Like This’ will be released in Japan on October 22nd and Hutchinson will tour there in late January.

The Bill Charlap Trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington played Wednesday night in a live broadcast on National Public Radio and Newark, New Jersey's, WBGO-FM. The program of well more than an hour consisted of one of the trio's sets at New York's Village Vanguard. Coincidentally, Charlap opened with Gigi Gryce's "Satellite" (See the next item). It is playing as I write, and tonight -- to quote Duke Ellington -- I shall sleep with a smile on my face.
