Well we’ve reached the end of “The Theme Days of Summer” and for this weeks playlist I thought it only appropriate that we send off the summer with an ode to endless summer nights and the changes coming as some head back to school, some back to work, and all of us close the book on the summer of ‘08.

Match ANY of the following conditions

NAME contains End
NAME contains Summer
NAME contains Back
NAME contains Change
NAME contains School
NAME contains Work

As Pete pointed out last week’s mood was rather dark so this week I’m looking to brighten the mood and get everyone ready for the weekend (though I’m steering clear of the puppies, unicorns, sunshine, and fairies). The friends of the five have come through all summer sharing everything from show-tunes, jazz, folk, blues, funk to metal and everything in between. I hope everyone has enjoyed the playlists as much as I’ve enjoyed thinking them up and sharing, next week we’re going back to the general shuffle.

For those who have not joined in the Five, here’s how it works: … I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes and share my five with some words (much more this week than last) for each track.

Then it’s your turn! You can play along with the themed playlist or just share the first five of your shuffle, either way the fun is in playing musical voyeur for the day.

Here are this week’s tracks:

1. Ne-Yo - Make it Work (from Because of You)

While I don’t particularly care for much of the current crop of R&B artists I make an exception when it comes to Ne-Yo. This track was prominently featured in this past year’s season of So You Think You Can Dance which just further endears the track to me.

2. Black Sabbath - Changes (from We Sold Our Soul for Rock ‘n’ Roll)

Originally from 1972’s Black Sabbath, Vol. 4, this was the first Sabbath tune to feature the Piano as its primary instrument. I’ve always liked this tune for how un-Sabbath it was and it was clearly a precursor to Ozzy’s penchant for balladry.

3. Prince - Sex in the Summer (from Emancipation)

If there is a truly underappreciated record in Prince’s discography then I’d suggest 1996’s Emancipation is it. While time has proven unkind to some of the records tracks (”My Computer”, “Emale”) others stand as brilliant testaments to the time in which it was released. This track is quite bittersweet in that a recording of Prince & Mayte’s child’s (which died shortly after birth) heartbeat is featured as part of the percussion.

4. John Mayer - Waiting on the World to Change (from 2008-08-23: New England Dodge Music Center, Hartford, CT, USA)

The second encore tune performed when I saw John Mayer last Saturday evening (read the full review here). He plays this one pretty straight and true to the recorded version. I’ve included it here just because I dig it so damned much.

John Mayer - Waiting on the World to Change (MP3)
[See post to listen to audio]

5. Boyz II Men - End of the Road (from Legacy - The Greatest Hits Collection)

This one definitely resonates with that “back to school” sound (even though this particular track was released after my School Daze) and feels like a perfect end cap to the “The Theme Days of Summer”.

So what’s taking you home early on this holiday weekend?

After the release of Dalek I Love You second album, in 1983, Alan Gill devoted some time in writing and recording the soundtrack for the film Letter to Breznhev (1985), even though, besides the title track, only another song (Lockets & Stars) is co-credited to Gill and Margi Clarke (who also features in the film).
In December Gill formed the Bop A Dub label in Birkenhead. Actually, it was a cooperative run by Gill and Jill Thompson, who previously worked for Inevitable records. Their manifesto read like this: “Bop A Dub is a co-operative of local musicians and non-musicians alike, who aim to bring music back to life by approaching Pop music from a different angle, a far departure from the typical Merseyside Sound, and a sense of humour so often lacking in modern music. The Bop a Dub label began in December 84 when Dalek I (sic) split (sic) and decided that it was not a good idea to work with Record Companies! They formed a co-operative with some other local musicians, of various experiences”.
Bop a Dub released a string of compilation-tapes of numerous unknown bands, which was for most of them their first and possibly only release. Among these acts there are Ecce Homo (Gordon Hon’s project), Nature Tablets (Kenny Peers’ project), Sex Tribe (Keith Hartley’s project, together with Peers), Chuca Russo (backing vocalist of Dalek’s albums and live sets), and other studio bands like Bop Co-Op, Robin Hood and Gimp Jizz with which Gill was also plying on an un-stable basis . Dalek I also contributed to these tapes:
- In June 1985 The Art of the Unemployed was released, featuring Dalek’s tracks All Lose Blues and Soldier of Love (both to appear on Naïve)
- In September 19985 D-Beat was released, featuring Garden of Delight, We Have Some Curious Infection, and No Reason (to my best knowledge all unreleased)
- In January 1986 Birkenhead Blues was released, featuring Dalek’s Birkenhead (otherwise unreleased) and Bad Science (later on Naïve).
But, most remarkably in May 1986 Naïve was released, a C90 cassette by Dalek I – the flavour of what could have been the third Dalek’s album.

Here’s the full track-list:

Naïve (1986)

1. Sunset

In October of the same year (after the release of Ecce Homo’s and Gardners’ tapes) a fourth cassette compilation was issued.
- Blue Vol. I, featuring Old Salmon Blues, I Use to See No Evil (both otherwise unreleased), and These Walls We Build (b-side to the Horrorscope single 1983).

In a 1986 interview Alan Gill confesses:
“The Liverpool music scene is something I’ve never felt a part of really, I’m a hermit myself & Dalek I have always been a small individual band. I don’t think we wanted success as much as the other bands, we were more into being arty or clever than famous. The whole thing seemed to me like a growing up process. In the beginning everybody was very idealistic & creative, then they were drawn to London and became boring!”
“I’m not really interested in working for a record company anymore, I’m much more interested in producing music that is individual and personal. I’ve always been interested in music not money, to me musci business is about money not music!”
“Dalek I still exists, but at the moment I’m the only member, at the moment I’m looking for singers. So hopefully in a few months the group will be a vocal group (for the next tape)”.
(…famous last words.)

For the Naïve cassette, visit this site:

http://www.dalekiloveyou.com/naive.htm

(For more info visit also: http://www.dalekiloveyou.com/
and the always informative: http://robinparmar.com/dalek-i-love-you.html )

George Crumb: Complete Crumb Edition, Vol. 12; Eleven Echoes of Autumn, 1965; The Sleeper; Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale); Five Pieces for Piano; Dream Sequence; The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), featuring Jamie Van Eyck, mezzo soprano (The Sleeper) and Jacob Greenberg, piano BRIDGE 9261 DDD

The latest disc in Bridge’s ongoing Crumb series is in many ways one of the most impressive to date. The young American ensemble “ICE” worked with the composer on the interpretations of these pieces over a number of years, then recorded the performances under the composer’s supervision. ICE’s recordings present a level of virtuosity and faithfulness to Crumb’s scores that reflect the experience of a generation of performers that has grown up playing this music. Some of Crumb’s most popular work is included on this disc (Vox Balaenae) as are some of his most infrequently played scores (Dream Sequence and Five Pieces). With this disc Bridge draws near the completion of Crumb’s ‘back-catalog’ and plans to release the remaining works before the composer’s 80th birthday in 2009. George Crumb is still actively creating new works, and two of these will soon be issued as Vol. 13- a two disc set.

Info :
The second volume of our ’21st Century Afro’ series begins its trip with a peaceful afro-ethio-cuban trip from Lightning Head (alias Glyn ‘Bigga’ Bush/UK), extracted from the 12 inch taster of his upcoming album (’13 faces of Lightning Head’), then heads directly into heavy afro-kraut-jazz from Nomo, a collective from Michigan developing quite an unique sound.

This ‘Last Beat’ is to be found on their powerful third album (’Ghost Rock’). After another instant afrosoul classic taken from The Budos Band’s masterpiece, ‘The Budos Band II’, the mix navigates into supafunky ethio-jazz from The Lions, a Los Angeles collective of musicians you may also find playing in Breakestra, Connie Price and the Keystones, Orgone, Madlib’s Sound Directions, Plant Life, Clutchy Hopkins, the Greyboy allstars… Their ‘Jungle Struttin’ album mixes reggae, ethiojazz, colombian and african grooves with soul, jazz, and funk!

Things then get more focused with a devastating pamphlet from Seun Kuti and Egypt 80, one of the many available on his booming ‘Many Things’ album. The Shawn Lee apparition in this selection whichcomes afterwards is quite a surprise, but since the multi-instrumentalist genius decided to go global on his latest album (’Miles of Styles’), there’s no reason to pass out on it.

The same goes for the closing track, the hard-hitting Afrobeat drum-powered ‘Platypus Strut’ by Ohmega Watts - with the help of members of the Breakestra/Connie Price/Antibalas… it’s a small world.

Denver (Colorado), USA - Yonder Mountain String Band, hailing from Nederland, Colorado (forty miles northwest of Denver), will be performing at this year's Democratic National Convention held on Denver August 24-28. Yonder will take the stage on the final day of the convention - August 28th at INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium - just prior to Barack Obama's highly anticipated acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination. Also scheduled to perform at the event are will.i.am, Stevie Wonder and Dave Matthews Band.

The convention anticipates 75,000 people in attendance, and a huge international and national media audience, for the acceptance event. This 2008 Democratic National Convention is a monumental moment in the country's history and in Denver specifically, marking the first convention to be held in Denver in one hundred years. This acceptance speech event, which was moved to INVESCO Field at Obama's request, will host more general public than any previous acceptance speech.

Yonder Mountain String Band is proud to call Colorado home, and to be a part of a community that has supported the band since its beginnings nearly ten years ago. Over the past decade, Yonder has built a loyal and strong fan base in Colorado, and throughout the country: one that has enabled them to perform and headline at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater (Morrison, Colorado), to host three-night stands at the historic Fillmore Auditorium in Denver for New Year's Eve, and to perform at the famed Telluride Bluegrass Festival seven years in a row.

After ten years of solid touring and recording, Yonder Mountain String Band continues to break new ground, bending their rock-infused bluegrass sound with their marathon live shows. Jeff Austin (mandolin), Adam Aijala (guitar), Dave Johnston (banjo), and Ben Kaufmann (bass), have formed a group that is a force to be reckoned with.

This summer has been very busy for the band, including the release of Mountain Tracks, Vol. 5 (the band's new live album), a national tour, a main stage performance at Bonnaroo, the band's seventh appearance at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, a performance at the inaugural Rothbury festival, the annual North West String Summit, hosted by the band, and their big return to headline Red Rocks.

Yonder Mountain String Band will close out their summer touring with a performance at Jazz Aspen on Labor Day. Yonder heads back out on tour for the month of October. In between touring, Yonder will return to the studio with famed producer Tom Rothrock (who's produced Elliot Smith and Beck), to record a new studio album.

Web site: www.yondermountain.com

In the Hot Seat is apparently the last studio album by ELP (as of 2008) and like so much of the
potential wasted all those years ago, this album is just a shadow of the mediocrity the band had
been chugging out since 1973. And again, the ego clashing between Emerson and Lake resurfaced
causing this effort of pop rock fodder to be even more disjointed than Black Moon. Furthermore, to
add more to the fall of this band, Emerson had nerve problems in his right hand, making it almost
impossible for him to play the keys.
For all intents and purposes, this album probably should have never been done considering the
situation the band found itself in. In the end, it represented an album that reeked of filler. Oddly
enough, the only star (though dimly at that) on the album was the bonus track, an almost 15-minute
studio version of Pictures at an Exhibition. It's much shorter than the original live version the
band released back in 1971 and somehow lacks the energy and performance of that live version. Flat
would be a good word to describe it.
If it weren't for the bonus track, this album would be a certain one-star affair. Two stars. For
collectors and fans only. Newcomers should avoid and start with any album prior to Works Vol. I.
