Well, it’s September and summer is about to end. Personally, I think it used to take twice as more to end yet every year it seems to speed up more and more. Anyways at least it’s still sunny for the time being.

Here’s a 4 song selection suitable for sunny summer/early autumn days. Starts off with one of the alltime best soul pieces; Gil Scott-Heron’s timeless Lady Day & John Coltrane from his 1971 Pieces of a Man album. The second piece is a latin piano piece by Cal Tjader, another song I’d never get bored whistling to. Next up is “Chick Webb” dedicated to the drummer himself from Italian drummer Aldo Romano’s new album “Just Jazz”. Is this an original? I seem to know this tune from somewhere else. Finally a guitar jazz take on Summertime by Hungarian Gábor Szabó. Enjoy.

Ever since the legendary Fania Records was brought back to life in 2006, the label has been issuing a steady flow of reissues and compilations. This year two remarkable releases deserve your special attention.

The first is a spotless selection of Fania tracks by jazz guru and worldwide DJ Gilles Peterson. For the first edition of the Fania DJ Series, the British record collector listened to over 200 albums to select and compile 26 tracks. It's the first time he does a latin compilation, and you can feel he purely selected on the sound and spirit of the songs. So even though there are tracks by famous artists like Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Willie Rosario and more, I didn't recognize many timeless Fania classics. This compilation goes beyond the popular songs you've probably heard already, and takes you into the 42 year long history of a very special record label. The amount of instrumental tracks reflect his unability to understand the Spanish choruses, but also gives the record a focus on dance and percussion. So if you're looking to get to know a great label in a completely different way, this is the CD you want. If you want the familiar classics however, look elsewhere!

The other album I want to talk about is I Like It Like That, a remix collection on which dance scene remixers are paired with classic Fania artists like Hector Lavoe, Willie Colón and Rubén Blades. It's a shy first step into modern music for the label, and many remixes are only subtly changed compared to the original track. But hey, those songs are legendary for a reason! The two Lavoe tracks are real standouts, not only because of their length (over 10 minutes!!) but mostly because his voice is just so great. "Mi Gente" is remixed (very true to the original) by his own nephew Louie Vega, by the way.
Also great is "I Didn't Want To Have To Do It" by Ralfi Pagan in a 4 Hero remix, who finds a good balance between new and original; and the jazzy rendition of Roberta Roena's "Take Five" by Italian DJ Nicola Conte. But the biggest treat for me was finding Brazilian funksters Bonde do Role on this album: Favela Fania!
The mixes with a more dance/techno feel are often quite boring: Bugz in the Attic, SSH and sadly Gilles Peterson didn't do a very good job. But with a good skip button or a strict iTunes selection you'll be the proud owner of some unique interpretations of Fania classics.

Some songs are timeless and some are just as important today. “Eve of Destruction” sounds Dylanesque to the core, but where this song differs is it’s not as all “self important” as Dylan is, rather the “Eve of Destruction” song is honest … “world importance”.
I can imagine every Dylan fan wants to grab their AK47’s in disgust of such a comment, but then that is the contradiction between the two artists.
Another interesting aspect about this song is that even though it’s about the Vietnam War it does not have that sensation of Hippynism, as one would imagine flowers and Tie-Dye exploding. This song is rockier, edgier, almost a “Lennon” like chant as “Give Peace a Chance”. If desired, this song would need only a few tweaks and guitar modulations and it would be a number 1 hit in 2007, just in time for the (sponsered by)“i-Pod War aka Iraq Police Action” or even the “Iran WW III Conflict”

A real lost artifact, Barry McGuire’s second album actually has quite a bit of historical significance. After his mega-hit “Eve of Destruction,” McGuire was set to do a follow-up album, complete with some excellent P.F. Sloan songs. During the early sessions, the Mamas & the Papas had just come into town. Being old friends of McGuire’s from the folkie days (Barry was the lead voice on “Green, Green,” by the New Christy Minstrels), he invited the group to audition for producer Lou Adler. The rest is history, and this record is essentially the Mamas audition, as they sing backgrounds on virtually all of the record. It’s magnificent, too. Current hits such as “Do You Believe In Magic,” “Yesterday,” and others work perfectly with McGuire’s gravely lead voice and the Mamas & Papas sweet harmonies. McGuire even cut “California Dreamin’,” and it’s the exact same track as the famous Mamas version, sans Doherty’s lead vocal and Bud Shank’s flute solo. If you’re looking to find the real roots of the Mamas & the Papas, here it is. Unfortunately, Dunhill apparently wanted little to do with Barry McGuire after the backlash of “Eve of Destruction,” and his career and this record presided in ignominy. “Eve of Destruction” is a protest song written by P.F. Sloan in 1965. Several artists have recorded it, but the best-known recording was by Barry McGuire. This recording was made between July 12 and July 15, 1965 and released by Dunhill Records. The accompanying musicians were top-tier LA session men: P.F. Sloan on guitar, Hal Blaine (of Phil Spector’s “Wrecking Crew“) on drums, and Larry Knechtel on bass. The vocal track was thrown on as a rough mix and was not intended to be the final version, but a copy of the recording “leaked” out to a DJ, who began playing it. The song was an instant hit and as a result the more polished vocal track that was at first envisioned was never recorded. In the first week of its release, the single was at number thirty on the Cash Box charts, and number 103 on the Billboard charts. By August 12, Dunhill released the LP, Barry McGuire Featuring Eve of Destruction. The LP reached its peak of number thirty-seven on the Billboard album chart during the week ending September 25. That same day the single went to number one on both charts. McGuire was never again to break into the top forty of the Billboard Hot 100.

The song had initially been presented to The Byrds as a Dylanesque potential single, but they rejected it. The Turtles, another LA group who often recorded The Byrds’ discarded or rejected material, recorded a version instead. Their version was issued as an album track shortly before McGuire’s version was cut. It eventually hit number 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970. The song is a grave warning of imminent apocalypse, and considered by some to be the epitome of a protest song. It expressed the frustrations and fears of young people in the age of the Cold War, Vietnam, the nuclear arms race, and the civil rights movement.

The song was banned by some radio stations in the USA as well as by the BBC and Radio Scotland. The American media helped popularize the song by using it as an example of everything that was wrong with the youth of that time.[citation needed] The song also drew flak from conservatives. On the conservative right, a group called The Spokesmen released an answer record entitled “The Dawn of Correction”. A few months later, Green Beret medic Sgt. Barry Sadler released the patriotic “Ballad of the Green Berets“. Johnny Sea’s spoken word recording, “Day For Decision”, was also a response to the song. The Temptations‘ song “Ball of Confusion (That’s What the World Is Today)” mentions the song title.

In the 1980s, McGuire left the music industry, and settled for a time in New Zealand with his New Zealander wife, Mari (former secretary of McGuire’s Agape Force associate, Winkie Pratney). He returned to the United States in the 1990s, teaming up with Terry Talbot and recording as Talbot McGuire. The duo released four albums between 1996 and 2000.
As of 2006, he takes engagements which include a few songs and talks on a mixture of topics, by both McGuire and his wife. The McGuires currently reside in Fresno, California. ~ [Source:Wiki]

Are my eyes deceiving me?! Unreleased material from Ms. Hill?! Yep, it's true, over eight minutes of it. Earlier this afternoon Questlove unexpectedly posted a link to this track on his Twitter page. The time the song was recorded, the initial album it was suppose appear on, and all other details are unfortunately unknown. Gladly, I don't seem to mind one bit, because Lauryn Hill's music is timeless.

Her unprecedented classic, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, celebrated its tenth anniversary last Tuesday and it is no doubt that fans of all kinds will still be playing that album far into the future. "World is a Hustle" finds Lauryn in a moving emotional state as she pours out line after line with spellbinding passion. The same type of passion we all fell in love with ten years ago.

Okay, things are almost back to normal. In the past few weeks, we have had our computer stolen, our phone broke and our wireless went out for a few days. Despite all of that, I feel pretty damn great and ready to get back into the thick of things here. We've got a new sick computer, we're rocking an iPod and listening to more music than we have in months and John McCain made the worst VP pick in history. Not bad, not bad at all. We aren't going to ease our way back in either; we're going right into the deep end this week, reminding everyone of what this blog is all about and why it's the best around.

We're starting with one of those Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200 albums, stone-cold essentials, a "you need this in your life or your life is unfufilled" jawns. Stevie Wonder's Songs In The Key Of Life. I've spent the past week listening to this one on repeat, feel like I've kinda lost Stevie in the waves of singles and new shit and digging. I forgot how utterly perfect this entire LP is, more than three decades later. Normally I save this for the end, but you need to buy this album ASAP. You just bought it? Good. Let's continue.

I've been trying to put my finger on what makes this one so great, beyond the fact that there's lots of great songs. The best I've come up with is that this is as human a work as there's ever been, timeless stuff that deals with life in all of its glory and hardship. He sings of love, sadness, politics, anger, you name it. I'm not the type to drone on about how they don't do it like they used to, but I'm not sure there are any popular artists today who would be willing to be this open and honest with their audience. Or maybe it's the fact that Wonder, even at his most exuberant, doesn't seem far away from remembering the dark places, the parts of the world and himself that hurt. One of his song titles sums it up perfectly: Joy Inside My Tears. I guess that's always been the key for me with non-dance music, that darkness-tinged perspective. Or maybe I just love the fact that the man talks about love and happiness so openly and unabashedly, as this is all I want to hear right now.

It's a sprawling, a 21-song, two-disc masterpiece and I cannot recommend it more highly. It was hard to choose songs to put up, as they are all good. This should be a good taste of what you can expect, including the bonus CD track "Saturn" that is totally cosmic. I truly believe that Stevie can make your life better and there's absolutely no reason to delay these changes. Buy the album now, thank me later. If you already have it, you know what to do. Spend today listening to this one and let the magic fill you all over again. Yeah!

I don’t know who George Best is but the dettail in the lyrics about the bartender looking like him and then transitioning into something about Best is just one example of he details that help make this song great (and got me obsessed). The melody and guitar part also have a wonderfully forlorn feel to them.

Johnny Flynn will be at the Cafe du Nord with Laura Marling on September 28.

J. Tillman - My Waking Days (mp3) (buy)

J. Tillman can break my heart with surprising ease. His songs seem to be built to do that. This is another crushingly beautiful number from him.

Avett Brothers - Tear Down this House (mp3) (buy)

I’ve been listening to this EP a lot and this song in particular. It’s got a timeless melody and some good lyrics. A nice lilt to the music, tasteful banjo and the descending bass note on the guitar part help nail this down as a song I want to keep listening to. (Another song obsession.)

Noah & the Whale - 2 Atoms in a Molecule (mp3) (pre-order)

Some people are calling this part of the new folk movement in England. I hear this more as pop, but I thought I’d throw it in here. It’s such a fun song, from the quirky percussive elements, to the gradual build to the glockenspiel and the backup vocals near the end.

Noah and the Whale will be at Popscene and Amoeba both on October 2.

Elvis Perkins - Weeping Pilgrim (mp3) (available Oct. 14)

I was just talking about Sacred Harp music when I found out that there is an upcoming release of artists doing Sacred Harp songs. I’ve heard Perkins do a rollicking version of this one live and like it then and I’m happy that he finally put it to tape.

Influences and Inspirations : Boards of Canada, Bola, Massive Attack, Speedy J, Nine Inch Niles, Sneaker Pimps, Depeche Mode, Future Sound Of London etc. and of course internet scene artists.

Loves to put headphones on ears and create an absolute unity with music… all problems fade away for this short moment in time…

At last, after a break of nearly two months, Kahvi returns with a new delectable release! Hopefully your summer has been laced with high quality idm, mellow atmospheres and interesting beats.

To ease you back into the normal 9-5 (or perhaps send a shock through the system), we’ve got an exciting and invigorating nine track ep from Tom Bragl. Miami radio personality, label head, Terror Squad/KOCH Records recording artist and soon, Global dominator DJ Khaled is set to release his highly-anticipated third album, We Global on Tuesday, September 16, 2008.
