We are very excited to bring you this release from Pedro Duarte. This release would have made my cousin Armando Gallop and others like Adonis, DJ Pierre, and Ron Hardy very proud.

Pedro does a nice job of fusing together both the old squechy late 1980’s sounds of Chicago acid house and the early 1990’s electro techno sounds and percussion of Detroit techno.

These are sounds that are very rare in today’s electronic dance music; which is heavily influenced by minimal techno and funky house sounds.

This EP is brings back lots of mememories but at the same time; refreshes the ears, mind, and soul. Go to our netlabel section and download this special little gem for free.

(Official press release as follows:)

ON THE HEELS OF A CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED REUNION TOUR WITH YAZ AND THE
RELEASE OF HER SEVENTH SOLO ALBUM THE TURN, BRITISH ICONIC SONGSTRESS ALISON MOYET ANNOUNCES HER FIRST NORTH AMERICAN SOLO TOUR IN 14 YEARS.

**NEW ALBUM IN STORES NOW ON W14/DECCA**

After completing a massively successful reunion tour with Yaz of which
the LA Weekly called “triumphant” and releasing The Turn, her first solo
album in four years, Alison Moyet will be back in October with a
complete string of North American solo dates. This marks Moyet’s first
trip back to this side of the pond as a solo artist in 14 years kicking
off at Toronto’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre on October 5th and wrapping up
at the Moore Theatre in Seattle on the 29th. (See complete list below.)

Showcasing various influences from pop, jazz and blues, The Turn sees
Moyet at her best and most self-assured. Her trademark, timeless vocals
coupled with heartfelt and mature lyrics are poised to take her career
to even greater heights. People Magazine mused; “her new solo album
finds the Yaz singer firing up some torch pop in sumptuous style.” While
Billboard summed it up; “The Turn, proffers all sides of the smoky,
blues-soaked singer/songwriter’s persona: dramatic chanteuse (”Fire”),
dance siren (”A Guy Like You”), pop master (”It’s Not The Thing Henry”)
and smart sophisticate (One More Time”).”

This tour will not only show Moyet performing selections from The Turn,
but also pull from her vast catalogue including Alf (1984) which
garnered her first U.S. Top 40 single with “Invisible”, Raindancing
(1987), Hoodoo (1991), Essex (1994), Hometime (2002) and Voice (2004).
All of which amassed a variety of awards for Moyet as a solo artist
including 2 BRIT Awards and a Grammy nomination. American audiences are
sure to fall in love with Alison Moyet all over again as the
Philadelphia Inquirer reminds; “before there were British white girls
like Amy and Duffy with big husky voices and soul for days, there was
Alison Moyet- the biggest and grittiest of them all.”

Andy Bull - ‘Small Town Girl’

I’m glad that Andy Bull have finally got a good single out on a label big enough to push his music out to the mainstream market. I first learnt about Andy through his manager the lovely Julia Kosky whom I met in an industry forum. On her recommendation I checked Andy out on a small gig at Sydney’s Ruby Rabbit, not really a venue but a long terrace bar/club style. Andy was behind a set of keys and on the bass was producer Tony Buchen aka Buchman aka one of the Baggsmen. Young Andy Bull had a great voice, a soulful voice for a boy from Sydney whom I thought would be too ‘American’ to work the indie gigging circuit in Australia. That was a few years ago and I thought he has disappeared or given up or moved away but fortunately he has come back with a fantastic pop soul number. Small Town Girl is a classic soundtrack tune; I get flashbacks of the Cameron Crowe movie Almost Famous, the scene when Zooey Deschanel’s character leaves the family home to become an airline stewardes. If that movie wasn’t set in the 70s, this song would be perfect. Actually, it doesn’t matter when it’s set cos this song has an ageless quality.

Alright, so the other day I chimed in on the recent feature on Treble where they ranked the best (their collective favorite) albums of the 1990s, the decade in which a very high percentage of music blog readers came of age one would assume. I’ve already posted an addendum to their list with a bunch of the best Americana/folk rock/alt country/whatever that didn't make the cut. I’ve paid a lot of attention to their list for a couple of reasons. First, I’m kind of a list junkie and use them to explore albums I’m not familiar with and to maybe reevaluate some albums I haven‘t listened to in a while. Second, though I haven’t done so in a while I’ve written a few reviews for Treble in the past. So I guess in a weird way I feel some sort of kinship to them and their lists. This list is another addendum to theirs in a way - a few of my favorite albums of the 90s that weren’t included, but certainly would be on my favorite albums of the 90s list, if one were to exist. None of the following appeared on the Treble lists. Maybe a few of them should have:

Mercury Rev - Deserter’s Songs
1998 - V2

Of all the exclusions on Treble’s lists the lack of Deserter’s Songs and Uncle Tupelo are most glaring to me. The lush orchestral production of David Fridmann, who went on to helm The Flaming Lips’ classic The Soft Bulletin soon after, provides the foundation for a huge musical departure from the band’s earlier psyche-rock. Deserter’s Songs is a dark and druggy song cycle that bleeds earnesty without ever sounding sentimental. On any given day this is one of my favorite albums.

Tamara Lewis is a brave soul. After suffering through 10 years of Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction, she decided to pick up the guitar, write songs and sing them. All of this happened at the tender age of 46. Now if that is not inspiring, what is?

Living Down River is a ten track recording encompassing real life situations and feelings all set to a tasteful mix of folk, Americana and blues. Tamara has a clear and thoughtful vocal style that is convincing while very pleasing and inviting regardless of what style of music she is playing. She also writes all of her own material and maintains her independence as an artist with no attachments to any third parties. Ok, I am really starting to like this woman, everything about her is real and original and she is indie - that is the entire package for me, well the music needs to be good too and in this case, it is the icing on the cake.

This CD is solid in every way, the production is good, the musicianship exemplary - all of the most important aspects are in focus so we have ourselves a captivating group of songs to listen to. I have no doubt after reading about the life of this artist that she truly is living the songs performed.

When you hear “Better Day”, it echoes with emotion and the feeling of someone that has gone through, experienced, and endured some hardships only to come out the other side and step into the light then be able to share that experience with someone that needs some inspiration to do the same. “Big City Blues” is my favorite, which comes as no surprise because I do love the blues and it is a very upbeat track. Tamara and her friends really strut their stuff on this one.

I think a prerequisite to listening to this music and understanding it is to be in a reflective and somewhat serious mood but also lighthearted enough to enjoy the warmth and sunshine it can put in your heart because of all the hope and emotion that comes down the river, just as the title and closing track says. It is a bluesy number with a harmonica that is longing for a friend. A perfect closer to these stories told so well. “That Leavin’ Sound” is a lament to a relationship getting ready to end as the singer anticipates a break up by that sound of leaving in the person’s voice. These particular songs made a noticeable impact on me musically and emotionally.

To relate to music is to know it, and to know it is to understand the artist presenting it. I think I connected on Living Down River.

It was a rare kind of August Sunday in New York City. Sunny, comfortable with no humidity in the air. A perfect day, as Central Park's Summerstage wrapped up its 2008 schedule with a day of soul and funk.

We got to the park in time to hear the last couple of songs from Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens.

I've always loved the sound of a gospel choir.

Next up was the Menahan Street Band, in their debut performance. Made up of members of the Dap-Kings, Budos Band and others, it was no surprise that this was a tight outfit.

Their set really impressed me, and I'm looking forward to their debut album, dropping in October.

Finally, there was Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. This band gets better each time I see them. She has played many of the major festivals this year, including Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, so it was a treat to be able to see her in a smaller setting.

The Dap-Kings opened with a jam and song of their own. Very nice.

Sharon Jones joined her band, opening her set with "It's a Man's Man's Man's World," turning the James Brown classic into her own song. From there, she and the Dap-Kings ran through a very generous set, crammed with a great overview of their entire catalog from their earlier releases to their latest 100 Days, 100 Nights.

The K's are a pop-rock group playing out of NYC, featuring Dan Kilian (singer-songwriter) currently found in the Louisville, KY band The Uglies. Can't Get It Together is their 2nd release so far. It's a hefty slab of well-played pop, featuring a horn section that adds some effective soul and groove. Certain songs stand out as especially well-written, while sadly a good half of the album is more or less the expected funk-infused rock they introduce early. It's only when they deviate from the expected that they really catch your attention.

Luckily, the opening title track is one of those tracks, coming off as someone playing a Beatles record while slowly melting it down to nothing. Dan's a better songwriter than he is a vocalist, but his voice at least sounds good mixed with the constant backing singers creating smooth harmonies to hum along to. The album really starts to shine between the 7th (The laid-back jamming "Good Man (Most of the Time)) and 9th (the darker and somewhat familiar "We're Never Getting Out Of Here") songs. In between is the excellent "The Mosquito". the best dose of power-pop to be found on the record.

Overall there's alot of material you'll be able to see coming, but it won't stop your toes from tapping along. You'll be amply impressed by the solid song craftmanship, and you'll realize when it comes to this type of nostalgic pop rock, few bands can make it their own and you won't fault The K's for not quite pulling it off. They still offer a pleasant and persistent bunch of numbers on Can't Get It Together, and it's worth checking out for any pop adorer, especially those still stuck on the sounds of The Beatles, Beach Boys and those from a not-so-long-gone era of rock'n'roll.

BMI will co-sponsor with The Manhattan Producers Alliance, “Composing for the Screen: Film Scoring for a New Era,” a five-class workshop that will examine the diversity of film composition. This is an opportunity for six emerging film composers to utilize the professional facilities of the Manhattan Producers Alliance, and collaborate in composing short cues excerpted from a range of film sources. Selected students will record, review, and share work in a friendly and supportive environment, which will lead to a final project where all workshop participants will compose a cue to a well known film. The final cues will be recorded by an ensemble consisting of New York’s finest freelance studio musicians. Matriculated workshop participants will leave with greater confidence in their skills as film composers, a strong cue for their reel, and an enhanced understanding of the art of composing for the screen.

Director and lecturer of the workshop is Rick Baitz, who has composed scores for many award-winning film, television and theater productions. His credits include the upcoming PBS documentary Body & Soul: Diana & Kathy; The Vagina Monologues; the Sundance Award-winning The Education of Shelby Knox; and numerous National Geographic specials including The New Chimpanzees and Heart of Africa.

Composer David Shire, an Oscar and Grammy-winner and multiple Tony and Emmy nominee, will serve as a guest speaker at the workshop Friday, October 10. Shire’s compositions include scores for Broadway musicals Baby and Big; feature film scores including Norma Rae, Saturday Night Fever, and most recently Zodiac; and television scores for Oprah Winfrey’s The Women of Brewster Place, The Kenney’s of Massachusetts, and Neil Simon’s Jake’s Women.

Emerging film composers interested in an experimental film scoring workshop are encouraged to apply. The workshop is free and will be limited to six participants. Applications can be downloaded at http://www.bmi.com/cfts. The deadline to apply is Sept 4, 2008. All inquires should be addressed to Rick Baitz at rick.baitz@manhatpro.com

Qualifications: Experience as a composer; ability to read music; some experience composing for film preferred. Applicant should have access to professional music production equipment, such as a laptop, with composing software (such as Logic, Digital Performer or ProTools) and notation software (such as Sibelius or Finale); ability to create MIDI or hybrid scores.
