By Todd Lavoie

Bowler hats, banjos, backwoods hollers, and burlesque hawkers - sounds like old-timey goodness to me. San Diego's mountain music-loving vaudeville-revivalists the Silent Comedy will be dishing out sepia-toned balladry and carny-shouted hootenannies to the Café du Nord crowd Friday, Nov. 21.

It should be one hell of a rompin'-stompin', suspender-slappin' shindig. Whether or not the band will share their homebrewed bathtub-gin onstage remains to be seen, but they're certain to be generous with everything else you might need for a round or two of Prohibition-era revelry. OK, the bathtub-gin thing is pure speculation on my part; what else could possibly be fueling their deliciously unbridled rip-ups?

The quintet, formed in 2005 by brothers J. John and J. Benjamin from the remnants of their San Diego post-punk band Dehra Dun, is rooted in acoustic-based roots music - banjo, mandolin, and violin figure prominently - but indie rock has clearly played a significant role in shaping how they approach country and folk idioms.

Electric guitars and keyboards find their way into the Silent Comedy game plan as well, and the guys seem just as comfortable in rock-out mode as they are in evoking images of decades gone by. Their sound has also been largely informed by the brothers' discovery that their great-grandparents were vaudeville performers; much of their work swaggers with a boozy carnival-shout recalling (inevitably) moments of Tom Waits, or perhaps more accurately, Man Man or later-period Modest Mouse.

Onstage, bowler hats and suspenders, antique button-shirts and tailored slacks - and when is the last time you've seen the word "slacks" in print, honestly? Titillated? You should be! - tend to be part of the deal, as is an old-time-religion/snake-oil salesmen level of theatricality. If the original Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus took a trek up to Walton's Mountain - armed with a thorough knowledge of Nineties and Oughties indie history - the resulting after-hours barn dance would perhaps sound much like the Silent Comedy.

The year's self-titled EP (Singleton) presents ample sweat-streaked testimony to such assertions; it also offers convincing evidence of the band's versatility. Opening track "Daisy," for example, is a graceful, swelling ballad - somewhere between American Music Club and Damien Jurado in feel - boasting a potent pairing of loping piano chords, courtesy of J. Benjamin, and tear-stained banjo from J. Michael. On top of it all, I. Forbes' violin tugs and sighs in equal measures - a glorious backdrop, then, for J. John's yearning vocals. The chorus - "shake, shake, Daisy, add some salt, add some salt and shake me up" - feels simultaneously like a come-on, a taunt, and a cry of resignation.

A serious gear-shift arrives with the follow-up, however: "'49" is a growling charge of deranged vaudeville, in which John's switch-over to carnival-barker persona is joined by thumping, clattering rhythms - pummeled by J. Benedict - and debauched barroom piano. "You're breaking my patience down," John roars over an angry tumble of colliding, fisticuff-seeking instruments. It's a dark, furious piece, akin to some of Tom Waits' 1992 brawling masterwork Bone Machine (Island).

The Benjamin-sung "Gasoline" is a thrilling build-up of tension rewarded by glorious release, starting off with hushed vocals delivered over circular acoustic guitar patterns - echoes of onetime Jayhawk Gary Louris came to mind - before giving way to sparkling piano, a propulsive brushed-drum rhythm, and slow-gushing violin flourishes. Gradually, steadily, the song gets carried off into a blazing, us-against-the-world rush of passion a la the Arcade Fire, and when the band lets loose in full-throated shouts of "I am all right… I'm doing just fine!," there's a genuine sense of catharsis.

"Beware," with its bleary-eyed trombone slides and eerie toy piano, herald the Silent Comedy's return to the dark side, particularly in its grim warnings of "Hey little darlin', you'd better beware / if you find yourself peekin' in your lover's hair."

The EP ends on a high note: the galloping, Balkan-flavored "Carnival" starts innocently enough with a slow lull of twinkling keys and clip-clop percussion before riding off into a thundering trounce of triple-time rhythms and wailing violin. Benjamin practically revels in the dark undercurrent swirling underneath the song's drunken hysteria - and once the entire band kicks in with their leg-kicking, arm-linking unison whoops of "la la la," the waft of liquor is tough to miss.

Lest anyone get the mistaken impression that the carny life is all glamour and good times, however, how about a few closing thoughts from the Silent Comedy? "She will never let him back in his life / But at least she'll never end up on the end of his knife."

Here's a video for an earlier, less high-strung version of "Carnival," titled "Carnival Song":

Simply put, they convey emotion and power in a very concise and believable way. Song Of A Gypsy is is an excellent psychedelic album and both gatefold/non-gatefold versions are monster rarities. There's lots of fuzz guitar and a mystical feel about tracks like Do You? and The Night, I Feel Your Love which has a sleepy, stoned atmosphere sounding rather similar to The Deep. Another track, Birds They Fly High, has spoken lyrics and 'snake charming' music, again creating a sort of Eastern mystical feel.

Based in Los Angeles, David Del Conte and Charlie Carey had already pursued careers in popular music for many years before deciding to embrace the underground rock movement. Del Conte released a considerable number of 45s; it is possible that as much as half of his discography will be found to be too early to fall within the timeframe of this book. The last recordings he made pre-Damon (aside from a handful of acetates never made available to the public) may be of interest to readers. As Damon Lane, he issued at least three singles on the Del Con label - these possess a unique Byrdsy jangle over which his trademark authoritative voice presides.

The first Damon single has a non-album 'B' side and a different lead vocal than the album version of the 'A' side. (It is, by all accounts, significantly rarer than the album and fortunately these tracks are included as one side of a 7" EP of bonus material with the reissue on the Little Indians label.) The record set the tone of the band's campaign which ran the course of 1968 - the message of love and self-expression coupled with an almost arrogant disregard for the establishment:

"I wake up each day about noon
I live in a rainbow-coloured room
I break every rule in the book
I don't even bother to look
I laugh at the heat, I've got bells on my feet
And oh, what a good boy am I"

The album itself is made up of (similarly) short, urgent tracks that overflow with Carey's amazing distorted leads and Del Conte's powerful, otherworldly voice. The title track opens Side One in dramatic fashion; the opening lyric "Today I feel like cryin', Today I feel like dyin'" delivered in a most convincing manner. It's obvious right away that you're listening to something very special. If there really is such a thing as psychedelic music, this is surely it.

It should be noted that the sound quality of this album is exemplary. Like the Cykle album, the fidelity is so good that even the bootlegs impress...

Del Conte and Carey, despite living roughly a thousand miles apart, continue to perform together and collaborated on a new album project in 1998. The resulting CD release, Gypsy Eyes has much to recommend it, not the least of which is the fact that it sounds like a second Damon album! The closing track, The Gift, is truly mindblowing, as good as anything on the first album.

You can also find the LP version of Song Of A Gypsy on Love, Peace And Poetry: American Psychedelic Music (LP & CD), but obviously, the Damon album is an essential purchase.

01. Song of a Gypsy (2:25)
02. Poor Poor Genie (2:55)
03. Don't You Feel Me (2:33)
04. Did You Ever (3:01)
05. Funky Funky Blues (3:00)
06. Do You (3:12)
07. Night (2:06)
08. I Feel Your Love (2:15)
09. Birds Fly So High (3:29)
10. Indeed, for both, a Manhattan appearance is equally rare. Though there exists no tour t-shirt to document the scrolls globe trekking, the band, the Dead C are on record as having only made one journey to the states before this tour, to play the Los Angeles chapter of All Tomorrow's Parties back in 2002. Like the scrolls, the Dunedin, New Zealand band's extensive back catalog has been ruminated over, each new release pored over for meaning and intent, and as is the case for both, new paradoxes arise out of every examination of their output.

New York City parking regulations had me circling the Bowery Ballroom 20 or 30 times before settling upon a viable spot to stash my ride. Unfortunately, I had already missed openers King Darves. Bummer. So it would be Northampton Wools that would whet my live music whistle for the night. The guitar mangling duo of Thurston Moore and Bill Nace invoked the spirit of Derek Bailey, as the two started out with spacious, delicate amblings only to build towards further rupture and the all-out guitar squall Thurston has manifested in over a bazillion projects. In a particularly pleasing moment (after several awkward silences), Thurston, in a fit of fury, slammed a file against the strings and continued to absolutely maul the guitar that sat torturously, crying out for help upon his lap.

Sightings continued the guitar abuse with their skronk 'n' pummel routine. Rich Hoffman provided plenty of dyspeptic "bass face," switching from slinky-snake charming riffs to retard rumble, while Mark Morgan danced around the stage doing a hybrid Russian folk dance mixed with a modified version of the limbo. The synth pad/actual drum drumming of Jon Lockie further accentuated Sightings half-man/half-machine hybrid attack. The whole Sightings package kind of sounds like what Einstürzende Neubauten would if they were around in the late-'60s — call it industrial-edelia if that suits you (it shouldn't). Not recognizing this song cycle from their latest Through the Panama, it stands to reason these new jams are to be featured on some sort of new album, which has me atwitter with schoolgirl-like excitement.

Dead C took the stage last and culminated a night of discordance. Mike Morley's lethargic drawl wove a dream-time musical language with Bruce Russell's guitar noisiness. Russell, in a perpetual Quasimoto slump, leaned over his guitar, not necessarily playing it, but maybe exploiting it, inserting a small metal strip between the fretboard and strings and producing a steady stream of feedback from the small amp he had in front of him. The drumming of Robbie Yeats was impressive; holding together amorphous rock tendencies can't be easy, but he pulled it off. Their set was full of peaks and valleys, build-ups and let-downs, while an underscore of atonality held it all together. The performance for the most part lacked the energy of some past recorded shows (gotta love that video of them on New Zealand television) and opted for more unilateral unfoldings and subtle crescendos. Although the sheets of sound built up by the C reached some transcendent heights, I felt, overall, they kept it mired in a sort of cosmic funeral dirge. Dead C have to be commended for their unique vision, their disregard of convention, and the sheer influence they have bequeathed, which makes it tough to decry such a seminal and legendary band for being "boring." To save face, I'll revert back to that old axiom about Wagner's music and say that, like the German composer, Dead C are better than they sound.

The second installment of Stranjj Selections on danceradio.gr features myself vs Mashtronics’s Cid Inc.

During the first hour, I lay down some of the sickest new techno and tech house; starting off deep and groovy, into pure tech-driven hysteria. Cid Inc from Mashtronic takes over on the decks during hour two, gracing us with some amazing progressive and tech, while throwing down many of his own upfront productions.

“I like rain,” Straddy said, staring out his rain dappled car window. We were nosing through wind driven sleet at Milton, south of Dunedin, the far south closing in as Stu fed The Stooges’ Funhouse into the tapedeck, his red rimmed eyes flicking up occasionally to the rear vision mirror till he caught sight of me staring back at him, at which he jammed the mirror upward, mumbling there was one direction, down.

The Stooges’ Loose kicked raw and loose limbed out of the stereo as we crawled down Invercargill’s long flat streets toward the city centre past the cemetery used in the finale of Goodbye Pork Pie. Stu and I had family here in the world’s most southerly city. Mum’s Dad’s family. Southland Scots but we were wrecked so a visit to the rellies wasn’t on the cards. Plus we needed a drink and a near dry Invercargill was no help.

We stood on the lookout at Bluff saw Stewart Island through the misty murk, got conned out of a jug by some smelter workers in a Bluff pub, and turned on dark for the long run home. The city fading quietly with the glow of its lights in the night sky.

On a quiet day there was always the varsity. Straddy, Stu and I would meet in the cafeteria. Ray had snagged a job at Cadbury’s on the line. We’d linger over a coffee. Read the student magazines. Watch the students.

It was just after mid-day and already the foyer was full. Stu breaking from the flow, clutching a record. Live Dead Clean. A final epic Clean EP gleaned from their myth making live shows and rehearsal two track. In the common room, Cassandra’s Ears with Jan Hellreigal, and poet David Eggleton were performing.

At the campus’ northern edge, a group of scarfies sprinted across the road carrying an old steel bathtub, disappearing into a barrack-like hostel building. Selwyn College. We heard shouting and the sound of struggle as we drew near. In the hostel’s parade ground two groups of students are fighting. The iron bath tub lay on its side near a Greek bust with a noose around its neck and Fresher scrawled across its chest. The same stoopid wacky (baccy) Dunedin student humour that would reach its apogee in the late 1990s with Marc Ellis and Back of The Y. We’d all seen Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds. Spring Break. John Houseman and his brainoid law students in The Paper Chase. Breaking Away. Square Pegs. Goodbye Pork Pie. Monty Python. Alan Alda and Trapper John McIntyre in MASH. Jim Ignatowski and Latka Gravits in Taxi. And it was beginning to show.

When it snowed we hit the streets with the students, balled up some projectiles of our own, and watched the cars drive by with snowmen on their bonnets. To ward off the chilly Antarctic nights Ray started dismantling the wood shed for firewood while the rest of us snuck down to the Tech building site near the Teachers College and dragged away some long planks that we fed in the fireplace in my bedroom bit by bit. The ends propped up by bricks. Rat engineered a coal stealing mission in Straddy’s car which yielded a sack of industrial coke which would only burn at high temperatures. Rat droppings.

It seemed we weren’t the only ones who’d bin reading Tom Wolfe’s Electric Kool Aid Acid Test. In July, Birds Nest Roys came down from Auckland in a painted bus called Furthur to play the university with This Kind of Punishment, The Straightjacket Fits, Look Blue Go Purple, and The Rip. Shayne Carter and Mike Morley joined Peter and Graeme Jeffries in this final TKP lineup, who’d record the majestic Holding for In The Same Room.

We’d seen the Roys day-glo bus around town, seen the cool screen printed poster of a Mayan style snake during the week, and the excitement built. But the show was students only and we couldn’t get in. A shock after Waikato University’s liberal entrance policy. Instead we listened outside until the cold drove us home.

We finally caught Birds Nest Roys at the Oriental on Friday 11 July playing with The Non Doctors, a makeup group which included the Roys’ Big Ross, Rex Visible, and an Alfalfa Lout. There was a real excitement about this show. It was a meeting of the tribes on scared ground. An affirmation. Birds Nest Roys being one of three great Auckland guitar bands of the mid 1980s with The Exploding Budgies and Goblin Mix, who’d all release era classics on Flying Nun Records.

The music was a shambolic joy. The big guitar and harmony sound swelling like a Phil Spector symphony. They hadn’t quite captured it on Whack It All Down, their patchy first EP. It took their mid-1980s single Jaffa Boy backed with a version of The Hollies’ Bus-stop to get that feel down, but it was there in spades tonight as the Roys adorned the last weekend of their farewell tour with a carnival of rolling riffs and cheeky pop vocals.

Stu disappeared after the show. He'd got talking to Rupert E Taylor, one of the Roys’ singers, who shepherded him to a party in a flat above shops at the south end of George Street. Shayne Carter handed him a beer at the door.

Eventually members of the Budgies, Roys, and Battling Strings would move to the southern city from Auckland, strengthen the flagging scene, and prompt a final burst of great Flying Nun Dunedin acts.
French artist Lexithimie debuts on Rope Swing Cities with The Poems of Longfellow a stunning EP of emotionally engaging IDM music, perfect for the end of summer and the encroaching winter.

Lexithimie’s production is peppered with Snow flake pitter patters of percussion which gently guide us through the snow fields of tone and melody. Soft and thoughtful songs filled with a hopeful longing for what comes next. The opening track, Hotslash, opens the release in perfect style; inviting washes of sound give way to a gently pulsing four four, ushering the listener on to explore the further landscapes contained in The Poems of Longfellow. And likewise, Snake Rolls, releases the listener at the end, a comforting sleepy ending to a marvelous musical journey.

With these ever so charming words in mind, please join us in welcoming a new member to the Rope Swing Cities family, Lexithimie, with the thoughtful and cuddly EP The Poems of Longfellow.
The two-Disc Collection includes unreleased recordings of the band playing a small club in San Francisco just weeks before “Light My Fire” made them stars.

Rhino and Bright Midnight Archives present ‘Live At The Matrix 1967′, the latest instalment in The Doors‘ acclaimed series of archival concert releases.

This two-disc addition to the band’s live canon contains two club shows witnessed by few but bootlegged by many. Restored and carefully mastered from first-generation tapes acquired by Elektra Records and The Doors 40 years ago, these historic shows never sounded better. The collection, featuring cover art by legendary San Francisco artist Stanley Mouse, will be available November 18, 2008 at all retail outlets, including www.rhino.co.uk.

Where the previous three Bright Midnight Archives releases documented The Doors’ final tour in 1970, ‘Live At The Matrix 1967′ rewinds to the band’s early days for a pair of shows at a San Francisco club in March 1967.

Only a handful of people showed up, so Jim Morrison, John Densmore, Robby Krieger, and Ray Manzarek played for each other, exploring song arrangements and jamming on a few blues favourites. Ironically, only a few weeks after the Matrix shows, the band’s second single, “Light My Fire,” would make them famous, selling a million copies on its way to topping the chart during The Summer of Love.

“It was early 1967 and The Doors were about to enter the consciousness of the nation. And this is the way it sounded,” Manzarek writes in the album’s liner notes.

In spite of the empty room, the band is fully engaged, using the time to give “The End” and “Back Door Man” extra lyrics and extended sections. “This is probably the closest we’ve come to a true document of The Doors without constraints,” says Bruce Botnick, the album’s producer and the band’s long-time co-producer and engineer.

The band performs much of its self-titled debut on the first disc, including “Soul Kitchen,” “Alabama Song (Whisky Bar),” and the first single, “Break On Through (To The Other Side).”

Along with those early originals, the band indulges its love of the blues with Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love,” Muddy Waters’ “I’m A King Bee,” and Allen Toussaint’s “Get Out Of My Life, Woman,” which has never appeared on any previous Doors albums.

The second disc offers a glimpse of the band mapping out its future, working out early versions of several songs from upcoming albums: “Crawling King Snake” (LA Woman); “Summer’s Almost Gone” (Waiting For The Sun); and nearly half of the songs from The Doors’ second album, ‘Strange Days’.
