By now you know that Jermaine Dupri couldn’t make it to Pure Atlanta last night because he was in Dubai with Janet Jackson for the Grand Opening of the world’s most expensive hotel, the $1.5 billion dollar Atlantis on the man-made Palm Jumeirah island. I know you’ve all seen pictures of it.

According to JustJared, more than 2000 celebrities from all over the world traveled to Dubai to indulge in the wasteful excess, including A-listers like Charlize Theron, Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen, Michael Jordan, Denzel Washington, Mary-Kate Olsen and even Oprah. B-listers Wesley Snipes and Chris Tucker were also there.

International singing star Kylie was paid a whopping $4 million to perform for one hour. The Grand Opening party for the ultra luxurious Palm Jumeirah man-made island cost more than $32 million and the party guests were worth billions in personal wealth. I’m sure security for the party was ridiculous.

There are some fantastic meal ideas that can help you with your diet, but what's also great is that you see that they are living a healthy lifestyle without cutting out all indulgences. It can be done! All 3 bloggers also incorporate fitness as part of their lifestyle.

KathEats.com
Kath is currently a nutrition student. She has pictures of everything she eats daily. Great ideas on how to put together small, healthy meals (with the occasional indulgence of course).
Written by registered dietitian Cristin Dillon-Jones who also posts photos of the meals she eats daily. AS she puts it, "It's not practical for anyone to copy every bite, but you can use my examples, adjusting the amount of food to your particular needs, and be on your way to a healthier diet."
Another fabulous blogs which has a lot of vegetarian inspired meals in particular, sprinkled with a healthy dose of personality.
The tracks have good sound, given the origin of some of them. The sleeve notes are excellent, especially the good news of further Iveys tracks to follow. However there is one problem, there only appears to be 18 tracks on this disk, not the 21 stated. The missing tracks are by Misunderstood. If there had been a problem with these tracks, perhaps this could have been dealt with before the disk was released. Consequently a star is lost.
Customer Review: Psych Sounds From Apple
Beatles collectors, jump on this one if you have not already. This CD fills in some Apple-related gaps nicely. Apple Publishing was kept busy in the late 60’s with several tracks by Grapefruit, Focal Point, Ways and Means, Misunderstood, Paintbox and John Fitch and Associates. Some of these saw the light of day and others not but there is not a bad track here. I think this is the perfect example of the fact The Beatles were juggling way too much at the time to really give much time to the publishing arm of Apple but these tracks will show the listener that the groups involved deserved much more. Some of the shining moments of the CD include five demo recordings by The Iveys later to become Badfinger. Much has already been said about them so I will only add that these tracks add to the list of truly great and under appreciated songs from this incredible band. The packaging is done very well with several band pictures and a previously unpublished photo of John, Paul and Ringo with Grapefruit. Additionally anyone who is into 60’s British Psychedellia would live this collection as well. I would not hesitate to buy this one.

Customer Review: Review from a UK reader
Certainly pathbreaking, although at times difficult to grasp, Settling the Pop Score is truly interdisciplinary and at the cutting end of music research. Stan Hawkins addresses irony and humour in an entertaining way, and his chapters on Morrissey and the Pet Shop Boys gave me a new insight into these pop stars. This book also deals with Madonna’s music and argues convincingly for why we need to take her music as seriously as her looks.
If you are a music or cultural studies enthusiast, this book is informative, although you’ll probably have to muster up a good deal of concentration to read parts of it preferably on a quiet evening before you’ve had one too many drinks!

Customer Review: Scholarly but entertaining!
There is a shortage in books dealing with pop music that approach the subject in a scholarly way. Stan Hawkins’ Settling the Pop Score was one of the few books that was invaluable to me when taking my masters degree in popular music studies at a UK university. The book approaches the analysis of various artists, Madonna, Prince, Pet Shop Boys, Morrissey and Annie Lennox in a fascinating and intelligent manner. Building on a range of theoretical premises, which are clearly outlined in the first chapter, the author proceeds to apply them in his readings of these various mainstream pop artists. So, the question is, does Hawkins settle the pop score? Well, this is difficult to answer. But one thing is certain, he offered me a way of thinking about music and musicology in a way that goes far beyond the everyday writings of so many music journalists. As well as music students, this book should be of use to students and enthusiasts from other fields.

As if dragged out of time in a world of infinite numbers, data and multi-dimensional abstract geometries, Ryoji Ikeda's 'Test Pattern' explores the intricate relationships between auditory microstructures, signals and electronic pulses. This piece is a conversion of algorithmic models from an
earlier audiovisual project, accomplished using specific software that is able modulate the sound input though using eight different barcodes and sixteen connected speakers. The live performance documents an army of glitches and harsh manipulation of high quality raw data. It is an extreme assemblage of a few hundred frames per second, which merges minimal sequences while chasing the limits of sound reproduction and human perception. This work is highly fragmented but retains a sense of balance through the frequencies employed and its design as a synthetic and sensorial experience. It has impeccable consistency and flow throughout. Essentially, Ikeda incorporates text, sound, pictures and movies in a single flow of information. The result is a dynamic, stuttering interference that forms a digital score somewhat alien, sliding along the ridge of a hyper-vivid contemporaneity.

I've never participated in a meme before, not for lack of opportunity. If you have no idea what a meme is, click here. In this particular meme (Sevens) you're supposed to post the rules of this meme, answer them, then tag others. Weird, because I've seen the same meme elsewhere - with sixes. Maybe it's time for Eights.

The rules:

1. Link to your tagger and list these rules on your blog. I was tagged by Alex, the Seaweed Music Girl.

2. Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog - some random, some weird.

3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blog.

4. Let them know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

5. If you don't have 7 blog friends, or if someone else already took dibs, then tag some unsuspecting strangers.

My Seven Facts

1. My Mother, a life-long coffee drinker and cigarette smoker, claimed to have spontaneously stopped smoking tobacco and drinking coffee while she was pregnant with me, but as soon as I was born she again wanted a smoke and a cup. I've never smoked and for the first 40 years or so of my life the smell of coffee made me ill. (I still don't smoke, but now I adore coffee and can drink unlimited amounts any time of the day without effect.)

2. I grew up in Sioux City Iowa, where there was a large pile of manure between the stockyards and the Interstate, not far from the Missouri River. When the wind was right, you could smell it at our house. A potentially bad job could always be excused by saying "It's better than shoveling shit."

3. In high school I read Eugene Ionesco's absurdist The Bald Soprano (in this wonderful pictorial edition) and I couldn't believe how much it seemed like my own life. Later I became a big fan of the equally absurd Goon Show.

4. In college I changed my major from Math to Music because the music courses began over 2 hours later each morning than math classes. Since then I've consistently made career choices based on how late in the day I could sleep.

5. In graduate school I taught myself to juggle using oranges picked by my roommate Wildman from trees belonging to the percussion teacher, John Bergamo. Oranges are very bad things for inexperienced jugglers because they split when dropped and get sticky juice all over. Eventually I took a juggling course at CalArts. Juggling was the only talent I graduated with that I didn't already have when I matriculated.

6. I have a huge tendancy towards motion sickness and I can't read in any moving land-based vehicle. Just glancing at a map while riding in a car can make me dizzy. Fortunately, although I'm a musician, I've never had to tour extensively. I really like sleeping in the same bed every night.

7. Here's a piece of music I wrote in a particular seven meter that I heard on an Internet radio station devoted to Afghani music.Read a little more about it here. I like music in non-standard meters - like five, seven, eleven. And I liked music which changes meter so much I named my blog after it. And I think the Diabolus in Musica is not what you've been taught - it's really the Back Beat.

8. The pictures in this post were left over from an aborted blog post entitled "Purple Things on the Grass".

My Tagees:
Andrew Durkin
Paul Viapiano
Peter (the other)
Atlanta Carter
The Improvising Guitar
Addison deWitt
Palm Axis

Seven Tags: one. . . two. . . three. . . four. . . five. . . six. . . seven. . . meme. . . David Ocker
