Hi friends and customers,

Sorry for the late announcement on this, but we are very excited to invite you to the store on Saturday for a free in-store performance by Thee Oh Sees!

Led by John Dwyer, formerly of Coachwhips, Thee Oh Sees’ newest album “The Master’s Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In” (Tomlab Records) is one of the finest rock albums of 2008. The band will be doing a full set later that evening at the Turf Club.

So if we were to offer up two vinyl test pressings—one from Talkdemonic’s Eyes at Half Mast and one from the upcoming vinyl reissue of Horse Feathers’ Words are Dead—for the first person that answered one simple question, that would be a big deal. An even bigger deal if the test pressings were autographed by the members of each band.

We’d be crazy to offer that kind of contest. But BAM! That’s what we’re doing! Here’s the question:

“What band was Kevin O’Connor in with Justin Ringle of Horse Feathers before they enjoyed fame and riches in their current groups?”

Come on, dudes. Somebody out there knows the answer to this question. The first correct answer that shows up in my inbox at cjarman (at) wweek dot com wins both LPs.

If you’re not quick enough, you can still order the Talkdemonic vinyl (so pretty) through Arena Rock records, or pre-order Horse Feathers’ Words Are Dead on vinyl (never before released on wax, it comes out on Oct. 28) through Lucky Madison once they get it togetha over there. (Meanwhile, the new Horse Feathers record, House With No Home, is available now via Kill Rock Stars—the LP is cheaper than the cd!). Also, don’t miss these bands on tour.

Eagles of Death Metal play Minneapolis’ Fine Line Music Cafe on November 8.

The Australian Pink Floyd Show, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of Pink Floyd’s 1979 classic rock opera recording “The Wall,” will perform this seminal work in its entirety at Hennepin Theatre Trust’s State Theatre on Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 at 8 p.m. Performing in Minneapolis as part of a full-scale North American tour, this dynamic reproduction of “The Wall” will feature the world premiere of a new sound and light show with animation, lasers and stunning special effects. NoDepression.com, a greatly expanded and enhanced website from the former bimonthly magazine No Depression, makes its debut today as the primary destination for fans of American roots music in all its various incarnations.

Like the magazine, which was the authoritative voice for roots music from 1995 to 2008, NoDepression.com stresses first-rate writing - now bolstered with audio, video and slideshows, and featuring daily updates of editorial content. At launch, the site will preview  Lucinda Williams’ album Little Honey and her  North American tour, as well as a report from the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Upcoming content will include coverage of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival in San Francisco Oct. 3-5.

NoDepression.com is edited by No Depression co-founder Peter Blackstock and will feature contributions from many of the magazine’s longtime senior editors and contributing editors, as well as content from the magazine’s back-issue archives. The site was created by The Old State, a web design and development firm in Dallas, Texas. No Depression received significant assistance in creating the new site through contributions from its Founders Circle, a cast of more than 200 donors whose names appear on  the Founders Circle page.

A series of 15  NoDepression.com Launch Shows will be held October 15-23  in conjunction with MusiCares, a foundation designed to assist musicians in times of financial, personal or medical crisis. Plans are also in the works for a July 2009 No Depression Festival to be held in the Seattle area.

Also appearing in early October is the first No Depression “bookazine,” part of a new twice-annual series of print publications issued through University of Texas Press. The bookazine, edited by Blackstock and ND co-founder Grant Alden, combines book and magazine elements to carry on No Depression’s tradition of publishing long-form music journalism.
