Judah Tribe reggae band today announced the release of the controversial single “Judgment”. The release was marked by a special concert Saturday night (November 15, 2008) at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).

The concert attracted a capacity crowd and left hundreds outside in the cold, according to sources. Also on hand for the performance was Nicole Paultre Bell, wife-to-be of Sean Bell, who introduced the song “Judgment” to the audience.

Until November 30th, 2008, Judah Tribe will be offering FREE downloads of Judgment from the band website www.JudahTribe.com/FREE.htm.

The highly anticipated song was written as a tribute to Sean Bell, killed by NYPD officers on his wedding day. The song features lead guitarist of Judah Tribe, father-in-law of Sean Bell, Les Paultre. Les Paultre wowed the crowd with his high energy and heart felt guitar solos.

The release of the single coincides with the 2nd anniversary of the incident. A candle light vigil will be held on Monday November 24th at 11pm on Liverpool street, between 94th & 95th streets, in Jamaica New York. The vigil will be followed by a memorial service at the Praise Tabernacle Church at 6:00am.

Limited pre-release copies of the Judah Tribe album sampler are available from the band website www.JudahTribe.com. The CD contains “Judgment”, the highly political “Sleepwalker”, the love song “Sometimes Love” and other unreleased songs.

The Rifftides staff is still catching up with recent CDs, some more recent than others.

Sheila Jordan, Winter Sunshine (Justin Time). The first word in the CD's title may refer to Jordan's age, the second to the quality of her singing. She is seventy-nine and sounds thirty. Part of her schtick in this live recording at Montreal's Upstairs club is to tell the audience how tired she is, but she doesn't sound tired. She sounds like a young bebop and ballad singer with sunshine in her voice. If there must be scatting, let it be the kind of canny scatting Jordan does in "I Remember You" and her montage of "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm" and "Little Willie Leaps." She praises pianist Steve Amirault, bassist Kieran Overs and drummer André White...for good reason. The chatter between songs wears thin after two or three hearings, but it is on separate tracks, and most CD players are programmable.

Mike Longo, Float Like a Butterfly (CAP). I hope that before Oscar Peterson died last December he had a chance to hear Longo's treatment of "Tenderly" in this 2007 CD. Longo emulates the first chorus of the master's famous 1952 recording, then pursues his own muse with forthrightness, imagination and relaxed swing. Peterson would no doubt have been pleased with his prize student on both counts. Longo's longtime confreres Paul West and Jimmy Wormworth are the bassist and drummer. The trio plays a couple of the leader's own tunes and explores several by Monk, Gillespie, Shorter, Hubbard, Raksin, Van Heusen, Schwartz and others. This is an unpretentious and deeply satisfying recording, nowhere more so than in Longo's clever blues "Diminished Returns."

Kenny Garrett, Sketches of MD: Live At The Iridium (Mack Avenue). The alto saxophonist
eases off his customary Coltrane modal intensity for a club date incorporating soul, neo-Africanisms and synthesizer funk. The MD of the title refers to Garrett's stint with Miles Davis in the trumpeter's late electronic period. The veteran tenor saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders brings to the proceedings an earthiness that rubs off on Garrett. Or is it vice versa? The rhythm section of bassist Nat Reeves, drummer Jamire Williams and keyboard player Benito Gonzalez provides the hypnotic backgrounds in this album of good-natured party music.

At some point last weekend when I was idling at Red Onion Records & Books the store’s proprietor, Josh Harkavy, showed me a copy of a record called Live at The Black Alley by an early-’70s DC bar band called The Time Machine.

The record itself is ok–it’s mainly composed of tight but decisively smooth covers of then contemporary radio fare like Albert Hammond (The Strokes guitarist’s dad) and Mike Hazlewood’s “It Never Rains (In Southern California).” The B-side skews a little more country and isn’t very good.

What’s really fascinating though, for me at least, is the cover. At first glance the photo collage presented here appears pretty run of the mill–there’s an implied narrative of long nights, crazy gigs, rock tunes, and female admirers. But a closer look reveals something a little more ponderous.

First of all, notice that the members of The Time Machine unanimously favor velour jackets, ruffled shirts, and bow ties–a style completely appropriate for say, The Four Seasons. But by the early ’70s, when this record was released, the band must have seemed hopelessly dated to anybody who a) had a pulse or b) wasn’t a member of Spiro Agnew’s entourage. Did the counter culture explosion of the sixties miss The Back Alley entirely? Or was the club merely a safe haven from the anxiety of modern culture–a Medieval Times for people unwilling to let go of 1962? Was the name “The Time Machine” meant in earnest?

Secondly (and perhaps this answers the questions posed above) almost all of the club patrons/fans/groupies are deep into middle age. The dancing woman in the choker aside, this was an audience composed entirely of bluehairs and men who bore a striking resemblance to Rodney Dangerfield. Yet the members of The Time Machine appear young and fresh faced, often with shaggy hair and the glazed over, slap-happy, facial expressions of dudes who had, at the very least, tried marijuana. What in the world were they doing in this place? Better question, why were they so enamored with The Back Alley and its denizens that they wanted the world to know that they had performed there?

It all looks surreal and a little bit frightening in a way that I can’t exactly put my finger on. It’s one oxygen mask and a “In Dreams” cover short of scene from Blue Velvet. Maybe David Lynch was even there–half of a blurry face in one of these photographs soaking up the vibe for future use.

Does anybody know what happened to this place? Is it still around? If I go there will I be able to sit down at a table, order a PBR, and shoot the bull with this guy?
