Update: Foo Fighters performed in Auckland, New Zealand at their sold out show last night. And by all reports “One of the best shows ever to be seen & heard in New Zealand” (!) click here for the review …. & yes, I didn’t get to go again. Who has rock concerts on Tuesday nights anyway? Now you’re probably looking at this artist Rose Royce at Number 502 and either thinking ….. wtf? or “Why is it not Car Wash?” or “This doesn’t look like the Rolling Stones website, for the love of God, gmtfo of here“. First of all, the “Car Wash” song sucks chunks. How it ever became a Number 1 hit (yes, it was off a film, thank you) I will never know. But, the track “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” is pure R&B classic & how that song ended up only at number 32 in the charts, well, go figure. Whatever we all think, this has to be Rose Royce’s definitive song. Take a look who it’s been covered by …. (Morrissey-Mullen, Madonna, I’m Talking, Joe Cocker, Jimmy Nail, Patti LaBelle, Faith Evans, Dallas Green and Jully Black)

Rose Royce — the Los Angeles-based group comprised of Henry Garner (drums), Terral “Terry” Santiel (congas), Lequeint “Duke” Jobe (bass), Michael Moore (saxophone), Rose Norwalt (lead vocals), Kenny Copeland (trumpet, lead vocals), Kenji Brown (guitar, lead vocals), Freddie Dunn (trumpet), and Michael Nash (keyboards) — was actually formed by Copeland and Garner. Both were preparing for graduation from high school, and contemplating their careers. Joined by Dunn and Moore, the two decided to go the route of the music business under the name Total Concept Unlimited (and later as Magic Wand). They auditioned for Edwin Starr, and he hired them as his backup band.

The group’s association with Starr enabled them to interact with numerous music industry personalities. One in particular was Motown producer Norman Whitfield. Whitfield gradually became associated with the group by hiring them for recording sessions; the group also worked with Yvonne Fair, the Undisputed Truth, and the Temptations through Whitfield‘s influence. After a couple of years of seasoning, the group began production on their debut album under Whitfield’s supervision. Also during this time, MCA Records was seeking an artist for the soundtrack to the movie Car Wash. Whitfield convinced executives that the band was more than competent for the job. So the material that Whitfield had assembled for the group’s debut album became the soundtrack’s material.

The movie Car Wash and the soundtrack were big hits, and they also propelled the group, now known as Rose Royce, into national notoriety. Released in late 1976, the soundtrack featured three Billboard R&B Top Ten singles: “Car Wash,” “I Wanna Get Next to You,” and “I’m Going Down.” The former was also a number one single on the Billboard pop charts. To offset any negative rhetoric regarding their legitimacy, the group released its follow-up album, Rose Royce II: In Full Bloom, and bloom it did. The group returned to the Top Ten with “Do Your Dance” and “Ooh Boy,” silencing all critics. In 1978, they released their third album, entitled Rose Royce III: Strikes Again!, and it featued “I’m in Love (And I Love the Feeling)” and “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore.” Both singles cracked the Billboard R&B Top Five. The group followed with a string of hits that roamed the charts, but never gained the chart status that their previous songs did. In the past decade, Norman Whitfield, the great Motown writer/producer (”I Heard It through the Grapevine” and many of the later Temptations’ hits) has changed his style little. Rose Royce, the nine-member band that recorded the soundtrack to Car Wash under his direction, sounds like the Temptations with a cotton-candy female lead singer (Gwen Dickey), a technically less facile but more compelling second lead (Kenny Copeland), three horns, two guitars, keyboard and rhythm. The Temptations‘ “Just My Imagination” is the prototype of Whitfield’s ballad style. In Car Wash, its plaintiveness was echoed with uncanny purity in “I Wanna Get Next to You.” None of the ballads on the new album can touch it.

The Temptations‘ “Ball of Confusion,” with its spacey instrumentation, disjointed vocals and Sly-influenced guitar twang, is the prototype for Rose Royce’s uptempo music. But in Rose Royce’s songs, “relevance” has been reduced to spiritual generalities. The strongest new influence on Whitfield is K.C. and the Sunshine Band’s minimal disco; “Do Your Dance,” a group chant heavily laced with horns, virtually reprises the tune of “Get Down Tonight.” The concept Whitfield and Rose Royce convey on In Full Bloom is the same one the Car Wash soundtrack exploited so disarmingly: that the inner city is a zany, but basically tranquil, extended family stabilized by humor and, above all, by a shared sense of funk. Blue Horns, Lets Go Hunting, Blue Horns (Self-Released)

This weekend I saw one of my new favorite local bands, the post-jangle four piece Blue Horns, play at Backspace. It was a stacked bill—Bark Hide and Horn and Resin Hits played killer sets before them—and, as Nilina mentioned in her live review, Backspace has really never been fuller. Talking to singer Brian Park last night, I asked if I could use something from the band’s self-titled debut as a COTD, preferably the graceful, shuffling “Let’s Go Hunting,” a track that features Park and guitarist Colin Howard trading watery, loose riffs on the midtempo rocker. Parks obliged, and then said something which, to that point, had never really dawned on me: “Let’s Go Hunting” sounds like Television’s oft-overlooked second record, Adventure. My response: Dude, you just wrote my review!

Though it was part of the of the famed late ’70s CBGB’s scene in NYC, Television’s brand of proto-punk was always a big more elegant than, say, the Ramones. And while Marquee Moon has gone down as one of the best guitar records (hell, records) of all-time, Adventure is an understated classic in itself. “Let’s Go Hunting” gives off a similar airy vibe; it’s full of Parks casually off-balance vocals, intersecting, diagonal guitar lines that rival the best of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd, and a steady beat from drummer Brian Kramer and bassist Andrew Stern. “Let’s Go Hunting” is perfect late-afternoon music, and it sure sounds great coming after the ripping stomp of the album’s standout (and previous COTD recipient) “I Will Eat You Up.”

Produced by Alex Newport, their third full length album is a more polished and less aggressive, however not a departure from their signature sound.

Carrie Underwood underwhelms in local concerts

The last six singles Carrie Underwood released all hit No. 1 on the country charts. That’s one of the reasons why it was a real no-brainer that she’d win Female Vocalist of the Year at last week’s Country Music Association Awards show.

The real amazing thing about her recent chart supremacy is that it hasn’t really translated to a solid songbook. Despite charting 10 singles in the last four years, and two multi-platinum-selling albums, Underwood boasts an astoundingly underwhelming amount of truly memorable songs.

That definitely factored into the 25-year-old country star’s show on Saturday night at Oracle Arena in Oakland. The 100-minute concert felt too long and didn’t contain nearly enough songs that truly connected with the near-capacity crowd.

As an artist, the 2005 “American Idol” champ is still at the stage in her career where she’s better suited to be an opening act or, at most, part of a co-headlining tour, like the one the singer conducted with Keith Urban earlier this year. Yet, her high level of popularity _ which puts her on par with such country queens as Shania Twain and Faith Hill _ allows promoters to roll Underwood out as the main name on the marquee.

Underwood has risen to the top because people like her – they really like her. She’s one of the most appealing celebrities on the planet, the quintessential all-American girl with an all-American success story to tell. People feel like they know the real Carrie Underwood, thanks to her season-long introduction on “American Idol,” and they feel connected. Those things count as least as much as hit singles.

The star’s efforts to showcase her bankable personality in concert drew mixed results in Oakland. Fresh from co-hosting the CMAs with Brad Paisley on Wednesday night, Underwood looked gorgeous as she took the stage wearing a lacey, tiered mini-dress and tall black boots.

Twenty minutes into the show, she brought a child onstage to help her sing the closing words to “All-American Girl” (from Underwood’s most recent CD, 2007’s “Carnival Ride”). The sight of the mega-star vocalist on her knees, sharing the microphone with the 3-year-old girl, was legitimately heartwarming.

The good feelings created in that moment were wiped out one song later. After finishing “Crazy Dreams,” the singer bounced offstage to make a wardrobe change and left the crowd to watch the most nauseatingly self-absorbed video, perhaps, in performance history.

The lengthy video - which could have been titled “Wow, isn’t Carrie great?” – showed clips of the star being cheered by fans, winning awards, helping the needy and being told how beautiful she looks. These displays are quite common in the industry, but this one was so over-the-top that it would have made Madonna or Cher blush.

She’d return wearing a lovely turquoise blue floor-length evening gown and croon through “I Know You Won’t” and “Jesus, Take the Wheel” (the mega-hit from the 2005 debut “Some Hearts”). Underwood sounded well-rehearsed and marginally strong, although no one will ever confuse her with a powerhouse vocalist like Martina McBride, and the polished, glossy music produced by her eight-piece band often seemed better suited for the Adult Contemporary radio format than country. There was some fiddle and pedal steel being played, but those instruments rarely rose to the forefront of the Celine Dion-friendly mix.

For a star of Underwood’s caliber, the crowd was relatively sedate for most of the night. That factor was underscored each time the singer would unleash a real winner, such as the sweet “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” the rowdy “Before He Cheats” and the covers of Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way” and Guns N’ Roses’ “Paradise City.” Unfortunately, those heavily cheered moments didn’t happen often.

On the bright side, Underwood definitely looked the part of someone who has a long career in front of her. Once her songbook begins to shine as bright as her star then fans will really have something worth cheering.

Is The Jimi Hendrix Experience The First All-Dead Band?

Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell has died at the age of 62. He was on the final leg of an Experience tour in the US and passed away in his hotel room.

With his passing there are no remaining original members of the band alive; original manager Chas Chandler is also dead. Is this the first ‘60s band where every member is dead? (I don’t include Billy Cox, etc. as being part of the Experience.)

Mitch Mitchell was something of a child prodigy, drumming with Georgie Flame and the Blue Fames when he was only 15. His resume includes time in a number of mid-60s British bands, but the Experience is where he made his mark, his jazz-influenced style being a perfect support for Hendrix’s sonic explorations.

The band was an instant hit in London. Here, playing at The Marquee, it’s easy to see and hear why.

Here’s Mitch underpinning Hendrix when they played a weekend at Winterland in San Francisco from October 10 – 12, 1968. "Voodoo Child" had only been in the repetoire a few weeks and the way Mitch follows Hendrix while simultaneously shifting through several different patterns is what made him so appropriate. The band was celebrating its two year anniversary.

Four songs later they played "This Is America", an exploration of the war and chaos that was consuming youth culture at the time. As you can hear, these are the seeds from which Hendrix created his version of "The Star Spangled Banner". How many jazz drummers can you hear in Mitch’s freeform patterns?

Two moths later he was at The Roundhouse in London contributing to The Rolling Stones’ ‘Rock And Roll Circus’ as part of John Lennon’s band Dirty Mac.

Give the drummer some, indeed.

R&B from the Marquee was an album by Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated released in November 1962 on Decca Records. Blues Incorporated was a British R&B band in the early 1960s, which was led by Alexis Korner and featured various musicians. Although never very successful commercially, it was extremely influential on the development of British rock music in the 1960s and later.

R&B from the Marquee features Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated's early, raw, unpretentious British take on American blues. The album shows a multitude of influences, from rural country-blues to the electric sounds of Chess Records, Sleepy John Estes to Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters. Note: the British Decca CD from the late '80s has four bonus tracks not on the original album, but the American Mobile Fidelity CD reissue from 1996 has yet another previously unreleased bonus track, a cover of Willie Dixon's "Built for Comfort," that Decca missed on its CD.

Meanwhile, Katy’s career displayed the same unstoppable forward momentum, as her first single, “I Kissed a Girl,” took up an astonishing seven-week residency at No. 1, equaling a Capitol label record set by The Beatles. The song was the 1,000th American No. 1 hit of the rock era, amassing over 2 million domestic paid downloads, and now approaching 6 million in global single sales. In addition, the song was No. 1 nationally in 15 countries, including the U.K., Canada, Germany, Sweden, and Australia as well as a No. 1 iTunes download in over a dozen countries, and a No. 1 airplay smash in 20 territories.

Along the way, as ONE OF THE BOYS made its Top 10 Billboard album chart debut, critics and fans alike commented on the cultural zeitgeist so effortlessly captured by Katy in her songs and video clips, including the underground Youtube and Myspace smash, “Ur So Gay,” and the five times MTV Video Music Award nominee “I Kissed a Girl.”

Sirius and XM to Begin Music-Station Merge November 12th

On November 12th, both Sirius and XM Radio listeners might find that their favorite channel is misplaced or even missing as the two satellite radio companies begin to merge their stations. The consolidation was first revealed on XM Escape, which announced in a promo that it would make the leap from Channel 78 to 28. The merge date was also confirmed by a DJ on Sirius’ the Pulse. The merge actually started in the weeks following the XM/Sirius deal, as Howard Stern was added to XM’s lineup after being Sirius’ marquee star. Neither Sirius nor XM has announced the realigned station breakdown, but Sirius’ oldies icon Cousin Brucie will reportedly become available on XM, meaning XM’s own oldies station is in danger of becoming dead air. Other genres across the board will also face similar showdowns between their cross-radio counterparts. As long as we can still find Eminem’s Shade 45 station (where he tends to announce major career news) and Bob Dylan’s dispatches, we should be okay. After years in anti-trust limbo, Sirius and XM finally joined forces in July to form Sirius XM.
