Neuschwanstein second album to date from 1978, after the Alice in wonderland release 4 years before, entitled Battlement is a real joy to listen, from capo al
fine. One of the true lost gems of german symphonic prog of the '70's. The music is like everybody
observed Genesis meets Camel and even Eloy in places , specialy on vocal parts. But besides this
influences this album is a good one in every way with a lots and fine keyboards arrangemets,
synthesizers who sound very inteligent for such an unknown band. The voice reminds me of Gabriel and
even in places as I said with Eloy's voice Bohreman. Every single piece from here is a winner, from
acustic instrumentation to explosive keys with guitar interplays, this album is a good aquire for every
serious listner. The fact that some of the reviewers considered this a Genesis clone, that don't bother me
at all, I'm realy impresset by this lost treasure of the late '70's. So all in all an excellent addition to every
collection, a real surprise for me, in a good sense. Recommended.

To say we’re fans of Tony Dekker’s Great Lake Swimmers would be a supreme understatement. I’ve see them every time I’ve had the opportunity and spent my birthday with them too. Their most recent record, Ongiara, was easily one of my favorite records from last year. Basically, they’re a favorite.

Today, we’re happy to share the exciting news that a new album, Lost Channels, is set for release March 31st on Nettwerk. A North American tour in support of said record will go down in March and April. Great news. Until further news surfaces, check the track list below.

As I bought years ago the three first ASIA`s albums (“Asia” in the LP format in June 1982 and in the
CD format in September 1993; “Alpha” in the cassette format in late 1992, and in the CD format in mid
1998; “Astra” in the cassette format in late 1986), I didn`t see a good reason to buy this “Gold” 2-CD
set, but I finally bought it one week ago, at a very good price: 2 CDs for less of the price of one, with
all the tracks from these three albums included, plus 4 songs from the “Now and Then” compilation
album from 1990, and 3 tracks which originally were released as B-sides of singles taken from their
first two albums.
This “Gold” compilation has all the tracks remastered, and all these tracks are all the tracks that ASIA
released in the Geffen label between 1982 and 1990. Three and a half albums included in two CDs at a
very good price. And I wasn`t disappointed. Yes, it is true that all the tracks are slightly faded out a
few seconds before in comparison to the tracks which appeared in their original lenght in the original
albums, but it doesn`t matter, because the fade-ous were done very well. The sound of all the tracks is
very good, much better than in the original CD releases.
The tracks from the “Asia” album in these new remasters made me listen to sounds which I never
heard before in clarity, for example, several acoustic and electric guitars, and even the sound of a
drumstick “out of place” in one song! The track recorded during the same sessions, “Ride Easy”, which
was released as the B-side of the “Heat of the Moment” single, is a very good song, composed by
Wetton and Howe, a song which until now I never have listened before in the original arrangement. I
slightly prefer the acoustic arrangement of this song which they included in their “Fantasia” live album
and DVD in 2007. Their first album from 1982 is their best in my opinion, so now with the inclusion
of “Ride Easy” the release of this album sounds better.
The tracks from the “Alpha” album, are in my opinion the most improved in sound due to the
remastering in comparison to the original CD, which really has a poor sound, even in comparison to the
original cassette release! The cassette release had the bonus of one track, called “Daylight”, which
appeared as the B-side of the “Don`t Cry” single. “Daylight” (also included in “Gold”) was better as a
song in comparison to some of the songs which originally appeared in the album. The same happens
with the other song previously released as the B-side of the “The Smile Has Left Your Eyes”,
called “Lyin`to Yourself” (composed by Wetton / Howe). In this song, Howe plays very good guitars. I
don`t know why it was only released as a B-side, but the politics in ASIA´s management and record
label underrated Howe`s songwriting qualities in 1983. This led the band to several conflicts between
the members which finally finished with Howe being fired from the band, a mistake that marked the
less success of their next album. The band never was the same without Howe (and also years later
without Wetton and Palmer).
The tracks from the “Astra” album also sound better, but the production of this particular album sounds
a bit dated, full of reverberations (even more than in the “Alpha” album, which suffers also a bit from
this), and very eighties in style and sound . In this album, the main instruments are the keyboards, and
Geoff Downes demonstrated more in this album than in the previous two from the band, that he is a
very good keyboard player, very much influenced by Pop Rock and less by Prog Rock. The songs
became even more Pop Rock in sound. Most of are good songs, but the band lost some of their original
sound without Howe`s guitars and songwriting. New guitarist Mandy Meyer`s playing style was very
different from Howe`s, playing mostly in the Hard Rock-Heavy Metal style. He is a good guitarist, but
his playing has a secondary role in most of the songs from “Astra”. This album is very much in the
same sound as others from the mid eighties, with Peter Cetera`s “Solitude / Solitaire” and
ELO`s “Balance of Power” being other two very characteristic albums from those years, with the use of
electronic drums and very eighties synth sounds. In Howe`s official website he was asked why he left
the band, and he said that he was fired, but that he also was asked months later to record guitars for
this album, but he declined the invitation. So Mandy Meyer became the new guitarist. The band never
toured to promote “Astra” because the album wasn`t as successful as their previous two.albums, and
the band split.
From the tracks which were originally released as “New Tracks” in the “Then and Now” compilation
(which I previously recorded on a cassette from a Radio broadcast in 1992):
- “Am I in Love?” was an outake from the “Astra” album. It is a ballad similar to some balllads included
in some GENESIS` s and PHIL COLLINS`s albums and in albums from other bands or soloists from
the same period. Meyer`s guitar only appears briefly in this song.
- “Summer (Can`t Last Too Long)”: a good Pop Rock song recorded in 1987 with guitarist Scott
Gorham and drummer Michael Sturgis (so, recorded without Carl Palmer), very eighties in style with
electronic drums. Another good Pop Rock song, called “Kari-Anne” (a studio track previously released
in the “Asia Live in Moscow” album in 1991, released by Rhino Records) was also recorded with Gorham
and Sturgis in the line-up, but it wasn`t included in this “Gold “ compilation maybe because it wasn`t
originally released by Geffen Records.
- “Praying 4 a Miracle”: a song composed and produced by Wetton with David Cassidy (yes, a former
member of “The Partridge Family”!). It is also a good ballad.
- “Days Like These”: a good Rock song which was composed by Steve Jones (is he the same member
of the “Sex Pistols” band?), which was released as a single to promote the “Then and Now” album.
About the booklet notes: I think that they have a good history from the band. The only thing that I
didn`t like is that they don`t include the release dates of the singles and from the “Alpha” album. But
they are good anyway.
In conclusion, if you don´t have the first three studio albums from ASIA albums (and the four “new”
tracks from the “Then and Now” compilation) in the CD format, or you never have listened to the
songs previously released as B-sides of singles, or you didn`t like the sound of the original CD
releases, this “Gold” compilation (with “Gold”really being the title of a series of two- CDs compilations
from several bands), this “Gold” compilation from ASIA is the best choice to listen to them in better
sound, with one song played after the other after a very brief silence between them (in comparison to
the original CD releases). Very good remasterings.

For last year’s 11 Songs to Be Thankful For, click here.

I know you’re in pain. The music industry, no less than last year, is inundated with made for radio pop songs meant to burn brightly in the minds of middle schoolers, sell millions of copies and then fade quickly into the one hit wonder used CD bins. Some will make club playlists and stay relevant for another year or two, but most will be either forgotten or turned into the butt of some future musical joke. But these simplifications overlook a large cross section of musicians from all genres that are producing quality music that not only can get stuck in your head, but won’t make you want to put a loaded revolver to your temple to get them out. In fact, months later, these songs are still gripping and enjoyable.

Thanksgiving is over, but while you’re eating some leftovers, there’s still much to be thankful for in the way of music. For each month, a main song that stood out above the others with the album you can find it on, and a second song that I give honorable mention to for being generally kick ass. But since life isn’t a one man affair, I invited my roommate, who receives the same monthly iPod updates (see the “What I’m Hearing” posts… the links in the month names will get you there), to give her input on what songs grabbed her focus this year. 11 months, 1 main song, 1 honorable mention and 2 recommendations from the roommate will give you about 44 fantastic songs you haven’t listened to yet. I say about because in some cases you may have heard a song, and in others, we picked the same one. Enjoy!

Jan: “Breathe Me (Mylo Remix)” (Breathe Me EP) by Sia. Most people had their first introduction to Sia’s heartbreaking song through the final 5 minutes of the HBO series Six Feet Under. The song, steeped in lament and longing, is nostalgic and only further inundated with emotion from Sia’s haunting voice that at times seems to whisper. On this EP version, Mylo remixes the song by fleshing out a lush electronic sound with bass and digital flourishes around the vocals and speeding up the main melody. The result is a moving and dance-able, yet still emotional track. Honorable Mention: “Way Down in the Hole” (The Wire Soundtrack) by The Blind Boys of Alabama

Jessie’s Picks: 1) “Nudez” (Rainydayz Remixes) by AmpLive. “Mushaboom (Postal Service Remix)” (Open Season) by Feist.

Feb: “Campus” (Vampire Weekend) by Vampire Weekend. When this album came out, I positively reviewed the whole thing, and now, many months later, it hasn’t lost its luster for me. With “Campus” the group uses simplicity in the vocals and instrumentation to evoke the feeling of days at college and crushes (if your college crush happened to be a professor.) The staccato lead up to the frenetic chorus is an instantly attainable indie pop that also brings to mind a Killers tune on Xanax. With the line, “In the afternoon you’re out on the stone and grass/and I’m sleeping on the balcony after class” the song takes me back to my own college balcony naps. Honorable Mention: “Weightless” (Lucky) by Nada Surf

Jessie’s Picks: 1) “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” (Vampire Weekend) by Vampire Weekend. 2) “The Chills” (Writer’s Block) by Peter Bjorn and John

March: “Front Steps, Pt. 2 (Tough Love)” (Absolute Value) by Akrobatik. This song is haunting both lyrically and musically. The solid production includes a piano sample and string overtone that sound like they’ve been submerged in water. The murkiness is then combined with scratches and a bass and drum line that provide it with a depth that comes off simultaneously polished and street rough. All of this is so that Akrobatik can provide an incredible song about the economic and social plight within the project communities, the current state of hip-hop and the need for change within the criminal justice system. He exhorts the youth to avoid the drugs and black on black violence that help oppress them, and strive for something better by offering them his honest take in the form of “tough love.” His lyrics come from a seriously educated perspective as he recognizes that the format of the ghettos allows the upper middle class to ignore riots and financial losses inflicted by them (”And when we riot they won’t care about the dollars lost/they’re sipping cocktails while we’re throwing Molotovs“) and sees the difference between a middle class white education and the education provided in inner city schools. The entire song is filled with lines that are both mentally stimulating and potent in rhyme scheme (full lyrics here). One of the best hip-hop lines of the year comes from this song, “This ain’t a war on drugs, it’s a war on thugs/they supply the guns, we supply the bodies with slugs.” Easily in the contention for my top 5 songs of the year. Honorable Mention: “Live 4 Today” (Break A Dawn) by Zion I

Jessie’s Picks: 1) “Opening Act” (Garbage Pail Kids) by Sene and Chief 2) “Muddy Water Stomp” (Garbage Pail Kids) by Sene and Chief

April: “The Things That We Could Share” (Soundboy Rock) by Groove Armada. Here’s one the roommate and I agreed on. In an age of Craigslist Missed Connections and the disconnect between people, this joyous song about the potential connections is a love song for the person you haven’t met yet. Starting with a groove bass, handclaps and “SB” chant, the electronically strained vocals through the verse beg for a balance with another person (”I need a warm hand to cool me down/I need a soft voice to drown me out”) moves into the chorus about a boy on a bus watching a girl, who is simultaneously telling her friend that he doesn’t care. When the bass line undulates and crashes into the triumphant refrain of “the things that we could share,” if you’re not dancing, you’re not breathing. Honorable Mention: “Far Away” (In Ghost Colours) by Cut Copy.

Jessie’s Picks: 1) “The Things That We Could Share” Groove Armada, Soundboy Rock. 2) “Watch As They Go” (Other People) by American Princes

May: “Winds of Change” (The Show) by EMC. Leave it to a super-group of hip-hop mainstays to write a love song to hip-hop that can surely stand as a classic. With an old static laden and sped sample singing, “Winds of change, that blow forever” EMC rips off a masterpiece devoted to the past, present and future of hip-hop, while never forgetting the overall perspective of fleeting life and inevitable change. Subjects like evolving music (MJ to Usher), technology (Beta to DVD), and clothes (Osh-Kosh to Phat Farm) are all well and good, but the highlight of this track is the last verse that takes a sad hindsight view of a hip-hop career from an old age perspective (”Holding the picture frame wishing that we didn’t age”) and the unfortunate decay that it can bring (”At 55 started forgetting lines, mumbling rhymes.”) As the rap moves to talking about freestyling with his grandchild, the song becomes both melancholy in its reminiscence and happy in the remembrance of the experiences. Honorable Mention: “Mathematics” (The Fashion) by The Fashion

Jessie’s Picks: 1) “27″ (Butter and Gun$ EP) by Blue Scholars 2) “O Samba Tai” (Carolina) by Seu Jorge

June: “Watch Out (Remix)” (The 3rd World) by Immortal Technique (click here for exclusive interview). Sounding incredibly sharp over a beat that samples from the Apocalypse sounding symphony from the central battle scene in Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith and polished Green Lantern production, Immortal Technique barks through this track that cements his status as one of the most lyrically intelligent and delivery potent rappers around. Starting with his album sales off just a Source magazine quotable and moving onto direct attacks on the music industry (”they push pop music like a religion/anorexic celebrity driven, financial fantasy fiction”) and American government, Tech doesn’t take pause for a chorus here, but why bother when you can deliver like that for two and a half minutes straight? When he ends the song with, “I need more than advancements and a rented mansion,” you know that he means it, and doesn’t care who he pisses off in the process. Honorable Mention: “Let the Beat Build” (The Carter III) by Lil Wayne

Jessie’s Picks: 1) “Reverse Pimpology” (The Third World) by Immortal Technique 2) “Dance Dance Dance” (Youth Novels) by Lykke Li

July: “Sittin’ On Chrome (Mr. Flash Sittin on Cr02 Remix)” (Delicious Vinyl: Rmxxology) by Masta Ace. This revamped version of the old school Masta Ace song is given all sorts of synths and electronic overtone. The verses get a video game-like sound backdrop with a fast dance beat. When the hook drops, the whole song slows down and the sample carries it. Honorable Mention: “Built to Last” (Coup de Theatre) by Haiku D’Etat

Jessie’s Picks: 1) “Desperada” (Jeanius) by Jean Grae. 2) “GFC” (Como Te Llama?) by Albert Hammond Jr.

August: “Zhaoderen Nana” (Introducing Hanggai) by Hanggai. Another point of agreement with the roommate, Hanggai’s mixture of traditional Mongolian folk music and Western influences gripped us at the end of the summer and made for great lake music. The use of a an upbeat throat singer here and a rollicking strumming are contrasted with moments of full percussion. You’ll have to listen to get it. Honorable Mention: “Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You (The Twelves Remix)” (Partie Traumatic) by The Black Kids

Jessie’s Picks: 1) “Zhaoderen Nana” (Introducing Hanggai) by Hanggai 2) “Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You (The Twelves Remix)” (Partie Traumatic) by The Black Kids

September: “Transitional Joint” (The Preface) by eLZhi. (full interview here) Beautiful production and a perfectly placed “just because of love” sample back Detroit’s eLZhi as he dissects relationships and the process of moving on from a failed one. Without ever losing a positive outlook, the lyrics don’t dwell on the past, but always look forward to that next glow. eLZhi acknowledges the sour experience of “rolling snake eyes” without losing sight of the feeling of “missing her like when the summer’s gone.” The delivery from verse to chorus are sensational and the beat is addictive. Honorable Mention: “Ship” (Purpleface EP) by Throw Me the Statue (interview)

Jessie’s Picks: 1) “Girls and Boys In Love” (Girls and Weather) by Rumble Strips 2) “Honeybee” (Purpleface EP) by Throw Me the Statue

October: “Please Believe” (unknown) by Longshot. I’d give you a breakdown of this very solid hip-hop track, but you can click on this link and go listen to it yourself! Huzzah! Honorable Mention: “Electric Feel” (Oracular Spectacular) by MGMT

Jessie’s Picks: 1) “Sadie Hawkins” (Doomtree) by Doomtree, (interview) 2) “Electric Feel” (Oracular Spectacular) by MGMT

November: “Trail of Lies” (A History of Violence) by Jedi Mind Tricks. With a South American melody and lo-fi beat, this offering from JMT’s sixth studio album examines lies perpetuated by the government and mass media, among others. The gruff voice of Vinnie Paz and the lyrics about a system in severe trouble make for a socially conscious song steeped in conspiracy theories. Honorable Mention: “Signs” (Intimacy) by Bloc Party

Jessie’s Picks: “Don Julio” (Vulture’s Wisdom, Vol. 1) by Opio 2) “Trail of Lies” (A History of Violence) by Jedi Mind Tricks

back in 2004 johnny boy were supposedly going to take over the world.

the duos debut single with the most amazing title ever, you are the generation that bought more shoes and you get what you deserve was released to universal acclaim.

the phil spector styled production (provided by james from the manic street preachers), the radio friendly "yeah yeah" chats, the reach for the skies melodies.

everything just worked perfectly.

and so the world waited for the album.

and waited.

and waited.

then as to be expected most forgot all about the band, including the record label that released that most brilliant of singles.

then quietly, the band did manage to get a few self released copies of the self titled album out to those interested, and people fell in love with the band all over again, knowing that while the single was clearly the best track contained within its 10 tracks, there was a lot of more excellence in the go! team styled euphoria, the wall of sound layers, and those oh-so-innocent girl pop vocals.

so for no other reason than the fact i have spent today rediscovering this lost classic and having a major wake up moment, (and the fact that at last my cd player has recognised the cd single!), here is the retitled remix of one of the best singles ever.

Long-time readers will know that I had planned to do this months ago, but it got lost in the hiatus I took. But, it's here now and you need to download this. People, this is life. This is love. This is sex. This is joy. This is pain. This is heaven's soundtrack, as I hear it. I can't say enough about these two discs. Whenever I am feeling a little down or sad or uninspired, I throw these on the iPod and just let the music take me to a better place.

Ever since the emergence of California-based surf-rock instrumentalists like The Surfaris and Dick Dale & the Del-tones in the early ‘60s, it has become an overused practice to describe pop music originating from California by using adjectives like “summery” and “breezy”. When The Beach Boys popularized the format by adding some of the best vocal harmonies in the history of modern music, the stylistically evolving use of surf-rock had reached its pinnacle and evolved into something that was more characteristic of the era’s irresistible display of pop music. Later proving to be a trademark of popular music in America, the legacy of surf-rock continues to thrive to this day, even if such aforementioned adjectives make the genre appear much more linear than it truly is. Such lazily worded assumptions attribute to a challenge that many California-based pop songwriters face. In separating themselves from the stereotypes of surf-rock and ‘60s pop in general, stylistic desperation often becomes prevalent in attempts to diversify themselves on a critical stage. Many artists succumb to how easy it is to be too generic within a very receptive style, but others choose to capitalize on the fundamentals of traditional Californian pop music while simultaneously involving other styles that derive far from the coast of the Pacific Ocean.

At their heart, Carl Jordan’s songs recall a form of infectious simplicity that would have most fans of ‘60s pop quite enamored. His works are instantly memorable and highly melodic, two components that contemporary pop music often shuns for rampant displays of creativity that often turn out to be overwhelming and detrimental to the accessibility of a given song or album. Jordan’s California origins aside, his songs are essentially what many would envision when told of a contemporary indie-pop act from California. His vocals are smooth and tranquil, backed by a revolving array of acoustic guitars, bass, and twinkling synths. While his playing style is too lively and his instrumental arsenal is too focused on real-time rhythm sections and guitar progressions to be grouped within a vein of electronic-pop, his fusion of technology into his sounds allows his songs to flourish even more vividly. This brightly effused interpretation of electronic and acoustic pop is not the most stylistically startling or innovative in the world of contemporary pop music, but Jordan’s project, The Western States Motel, reaps most greatly from one very important aspect: the songwriting. Though his new EP, Painted Birds Flying in the Orange Mirror Sun, contains a mere five songs, there are enough hooks and flawlessly executed moments to compensate for a full-length album.

Not very surprisingly, Jordan apparently wrote most of his lyrics to his self-titled debut album while he overlooked the Pacific Ocean. Alternating between San Francisco, Monterey, and Santa Cruz, his musical career at that point proved to be as reliable as his residence at the tie. Passing freely between friends’ apartments, he took any sort of hospitality to heart as he continued to pursue his musical intents of releasing something under his name. This opportunity came in January of 2007, when he released The Western States Motel under Firebird Field Records. Recorded in a spare bedroom with a few cheap but sentimental items (a $15 acoustic guitar was one), Jordan used his experience from a few recording classes he took at UC Santa Cruz to construct a debut album that proved to be surprisingly memorable for someone with such low financial means. Quality music has a funny way of getting out though, regardless of how much extra cash the artist has in their back pocket. In fact, it can occasionally prove even more respectable if an artist is able to produce exposure without any extraneous expenses at all. For someone with such a DIY mentality close to their heart, Jordan’s songs contain a plethora of both melodic and instrumental alterations. Any questions regarding his skills as either a songwriter or multi-instrumentalist should immediately be put to rest upon hearing either his debut, new EP, or by attending one of his shows (which are backed by a full band, staying true to his expansive repertoire as a tactful multi-instrumentalist).

After Jordan’s original intent to make The Western States Hotel a project designed specifically for scoring local films was relinquished upon the release of his self-titled debut in 2007, he began to recognize that writing pop music was an arguably more accurate embodiment of his influences and aspirations. After all, the album proved so enjoyable that praise among peers and several publications (Spin, LA Times) prompted Jordan to begin working on a continuation to the debut. Like his debut, the process for creating Painted Birds Flying in the Orange Mirror Sun was long and required quite a bit of patience. 18 months resulted in five songs, but these five songs are definitively the best material that Jordan has put out. The excellent “Oh World” is led by an acoustical arpeggio during the verses, complemented by a sprinkling of high-pitched synths at the end of each measure. With its slick incorporation of both electroncia and acoustical pop, the chorus sits somewhere between the indie-pop flair of The Shins and the melodic amiability of Coconut Records. “So many days that just got lost in a haze,” he sings wistfully. “I should be changing my mind. I should be changing my ways.” The track treads no experimental territory, but there is no need for it either way with such brilliant usage of synthesizers and acoustic guitars.

The utterly infectious nature of “Oh World” remains synonymous with Jordan’s pop-oriented DIY intentions, as is also seen on a track like “A Moment in the Sun” where he employs a ‘60s vibe on his keyboards over automated, electro-like percussion. The chorus sees him transition to power-pop territory as a distorted guitar and synthesized strings establish yet another stellar hook on a release full of them. A fascinating instrumental snippet occurs around 01:50 for about 15 seconds, seeing two very snappy synths collide over a bustling rhythm section. This moment in particular reminded me of electronic experimentalism in the vein of Matmos’ recent Supreme Balloon, though the rest of the track and album consists of amiable pop that should be extremely likable upon first listen for many of those exposed to Jordan for the first time. Additionally, the opening “Stampede” deserves a mention for an excellent utilization of those aforementioned synthesized strings during the chorus. The track is also an excellent display of Jordan’s structural tendencies, with “Stampede” being the most varied he has released. As it transitions from a solely acoustic melody to a grandiose string-aided chorus and then back again into a series of dramatically differing melodies that consist of alternating instrumentation, I could not help but get excited about the potential of this young songwriter. Before one of his tracks appears on some esteemed teenage drama and pushes him into some well-deserved exposure, get a grasp of Carl Jordan’s songwriting prowess. You certainly will not regret it.
