Located in a 25,000 square foot space at 76 Mercer Street, the Annex features artifacts like Bruce Springsteen’s ’57 Chevy (who cares?!) to a poem written by Jim Morrison. There’s an emphasis on iconic clothing, as the collection including the famously big suit David Byrne wore in Stop Making Sense, Prince’s coat from Purple Rain, and a sequined dress worn by Tina Turner. It’s a shame they couldn’t get Michael Jackson’s sequined glove. The Clash receives the royal treatment with an in-depth look at their songs, lyrics, and cultural impact. I’m personally looking forward to the "NY Rocks" exhibit, which features personal items from many icons while paying homage to clubs like CBGBs, whose awning and phone booth will be on display. Let’s hope they didn’t include the toilet. Yuck!

Hello all ! I am new here.

Concerning my acoustic noise and melodic singing project. I already miss tones. It's useless for me to limit to acoustic madness. Then, I will want to limit to a sound concept for other projects as well. Bad idea...I have heard that too often in the past. Fully inclusive approach is not often encouraged. You need to choose at some point, what to choose is up to your personal fixations. If you only care for knowledge, it might be harder without a sound concept. I don't have this problem. Build a personal sensitivity first.

What should I remember from these works...
http://www.americancomposers.org/orchestratech/oteri_list.htm

I don't know most of them. I want to hear them all in the next months. For the moment, here are questions I am always asking myself while listening to electronic works I half care about :
-When there are voices, why does electroacoustic music always comes with clinical spoken poetry ?
-Why does electroacoustic music still often sounds to me like a fear of human emotions ? Ideas about History of art are all that seem acceptable in such a context ; Godard movies were better before 1969.
- Why does serious composers don't want to sample pop melodies and patterns, but embrace Pink Floyd abstraction (I am hearing a sample in a Applebaum composition right now...The bats !! 'Taaa...taaa...taaa...Dum !'). Good words to Bernard Parmegiani - pop'eclectic for doing the opposite.
- Why fast rhythms are so little explored in electroacoustic music ? Why a slow development of one idea (saying the same thing with other words which don't make the thing more interesting) ?
Why drones and long spaces are so important ?
- Why open structures are supposed to be a higher form of art ?

I hope these questions will go away after listening to these works selected in 2001.

Thanks for reading !
I remember seeing PE perform "Harder Than You Think" on Jimmy Kimmel Live a year and a half ago, and I said to myself that PE still had "it."

A friend of mine e-mailed me yesterday looking for some new music recommendations. Now, I should tell you that this is not some casual country fan. He used to work in country radio, so I had to think long and hard about what he might like. He’s pretty much heard it all. I wanted to make sure my playlist had the kind of music that was fresh and new but still country enough to feel genuine. And this is the what I came up with, by browsing my iPhone’s “Recently Added” playlist. Some may not be technically new, but they may be new to him. If you’d like to add to the list, feel free. The more country, the better. With enough good twangy vocals and steel guitars, maybe he’ll realize what he’s missing and come on back to country for good.

I was just talking to a friend about the movie Dude, Where’s My Car? yesterday. In attempting to persuade them to watch the Ashton Kutcher/Seann William Scott opus, I mentioned how it unexpectedly turns into a sci-fi movie, inferring that that twist is reason enough to catapult it into must-view status.

“Girls of Spring,” a willowy tune by Aan, is a similar work, with its own unexpected sci-fi connection. Though I wouldn’t have known it without talking to Bud Wilson, the man behind Aan’s delicate strings and layered, octave-jumping vocals. Below we chat about the sci-fi origins of the easygoing pop track, its meaning and fitting it is for Portland’s annual city-wide winter basement retreat. Cute girls also factor in. Judging by all that, I’d say this too sounds like the recipe for an excellent film. Hey Matt McCormick, wanna helm the project? I hear you just wrapped the other feature you were working on…

Q&A with Aan’s Bud Wilson:

What is the song about?
“Girls of Spring” is about being afraid of getting lonely. It’s knowing that as the weather turns here in Portland, people disappear, stow away in their homes and basements until light returns for more than a few hours a day and we can ride around without fenders again. But also it’s a celebration of the faction of us who are not afraid of the dismal gray rain, and find ways to stick it out with fervor and maintain satisfactory relationships through the coming season. Mainly it’s about cute girls.

How long did it take to write? Why did you write it?
The song was an afterthought. I’d just finished recording a different song that took a few days to get out. I had no intentions of spending another few hours pushing record. The riff came up quickly and there was no choice but to track it. I’d recently re-read one of my favorite stories by Madeline L’Engle, A Wind In the Door. In the book, there is a terrible happening called “Echthroi;” a blackness streaking across the universe turning something into nothing. I had a visual of this “Echthroi” erasing good folks with the coming wind. It’s some sci-fi stuff, but mix love and science fiction and that’s hot shit. It all was recorded in about an hour and a half.

What’s your favorite season?
My favorite season is the fall.

Why?
Picking apples off neighborhood trees. Dressing up to keep warm. Watching things die, knowing they’ll return soon enough when I’ve forgotten about them. It’s about dismissing those things that were bringing a person down and getting skeletal, keeping what’s essential.

What will you be doing in relation to your music during winter?
This winter I’m moving houses here in Portland. I’ll be looking for a drummer. I’ll be recording constantly, I hope. I’d like to find a positive place and make something a bit more uplifting, something wholesome. I’ll certainly be playing shows at Valentines and some of the smaller venues around. I just bought a monstrous bass amp so i’ll be driving the neighbors crazy with low end rumbles. Music is always and everything, the rest of my life wraps itself around it.

“Girls of Spring” will be officially released on a self-released E.P. in spring 2009 available digitally on itunes and in physical form at shows.

The word is Usher will drop another album early 2009 and he's recruited Ne-Yo to write some tracks for it. So far I've played 4 tracks that weren't on the latest album that sound very big! Lets hope something happens with the Rich Harrison produced 'That Girl Right There' Ft Ludacris which is too good to just fade away...

Have a listen to 'Played Me' Ft Bishop.
It’s hard to imagine how Matthew Houck, better known as Phosphorescent, is going to capture the feel of his highly atmospheric album, Pride, in a rock club. Because much of the album sounds like 15 Will Oldhams doing shape note singing at the bottom of an empty swimming pool, Houck’s yearning Americana is bound to be a headache for whatever sound guy is going to be stuck dialing the Brooklyn based singer-songwriter into DC 9’s board this evening. Or maybe not? Perhaps Houck will just show up with 15 Will Oldhams? Or maybe he’ll just pull out an acoustic guitar and hope for the best? Only way to find out is to show up tonight.

Rihanna is everywhere these days (especially now that Beyonce’s double album has dropped). Last night she hosted the launch of Gucci’s Tattoo Heart Collection to Benefit UNICEF at Gucci’s 5th Avenue store in NYC. Rihanna wore a smart red Gucci tunic dress with Gucci boots.

And on the same evening, Rihanna attended UNICEF’s 2008 Snowflake Lighting symbolizing the beginning of gift-giving season at Grand Army Plaza in NY. Isn’t she Grand?!

Meanwhile, not too far from where Princess Rihanna was holding court, her humble servant Beyonce attended the unveiling of Seventeen Magazine’s 2008 Style Star of the Year at the Hearst Tower in NY. We wonder who is the star of the year? Is it Rihanna?

Mary J. Blige was decked out in Louis Vuitton and Gucci at Gucci’s Tattoo Heart Collection to Benefit UNICEF dinner at The Plaza in NYC last night. We hope PETA didn’t throw flour on her fur like they did Lindsay Lohan because Mary is no Lindsay Lohan! Mary will stomp a mud hole in that ass if they fluck with her LV fur piece!

DO YOU WANT FRIES TO GO WITH THAT SHAKE?

I can’t crack on Gabby because she’s doing good in the hood. Gabby promoted World Children’s Day by selling “hands” at a McDonald’s franchise location in Chicago yesterday.

I give A Saucerful of Secrets 4 stars, and the reason is I'm trying to be less biased. Ordinarily, I
would give it 5 stars in my own personal opinion, because I think it's an amazing album... but I
understand that people have different musical tastes, and that these reviews are mainly for people
who are looking to buy the album.
A Saucerful of Secrets is great mainly because of the diversity of all of its songs. However this
same thing makes it kinda strange and awkward. Sometimes 2 pieces of music sound so different you
wouldn't imagine that it's on the same album. This was at a point where different members were
writing differently and contributing their own stuff. Richard Wright wrote psychedelic rock songs
reminiscient of the Piper days, Roger Wrote more space Rock (with a humourous piece about war called
Corporal Clegg) and Syd Barrett wrote a few songs for the album. The only song he wrote that was
featured on the album was Jugband Blues which is a very diverse song, fitting in several different
sounding parts in 3 minutes. The Rejected songs are Scream Thy Last Scream and Vegetable Man
both of which are amazing songs, and I don't know why they weren't included. There's only 7 songs,
and none are of extremely epic length, the longest being about 12 minutes. The whole album is around
39 minutes, I think.
The Magnum Opus of this album is the title Track, A Saucerful of Secrets. It is very much Avant
Garde and Experimental. This song is more like a piece of art... and depending on your appreciation
for it, it might be easy or hard to understand as such. I like to compare it to Picaso Paintings...
they look weird, oddly shaped, strangely coloured, etc. But it's art, just a different way to look
at them. Some people do not understand this, because they are expecting to hear traditional rock
music... that is bass and normal guitar, keyboards drums and singing, choruses, etc. And these
people often criticize A Saucerful of Secrets for being nothing but Noise. But the noise is
organized in a way that it's experimental and epic. It features menacing percussion, howling
feedback, crashing cymbals, and at the end, a chorus of eerie wordless vocals. It sounds like the
soundtrack to some strange sequence. Roger Waters says it symbolizes a battle.
This piece is much more for fans of really avant garde and experimental music... music that is not
just rock and roll, but is a totally new genre in itself. But I find that this song is amazing, and
I hope you do too.
I totally recommend A Saucerful of Secrets... but it's a risk to buy if you are not used to very
strange and experimental things. I think that it's more for Pink Floyd fans who know the band and
are sure they're going to like it. But it is a great musical piece and I'm sure anyone who can at
least understand the art of it will enjoy it a lot. It's not their best album, but by far not their
worst either.
