I don't get enough world music and when I do get it a lot of times I don't know what to do with it and it gets shoved aside. The main reason world music is so refreshing at times is that it is completely different from the pop/punk/metal/rock/electronic/country landscape that I usually dwell.

The sheet that came with The Gyuto Monks disc talks about how the monks manage to get to a tone so low that it is inhumanly possible. But the monks manage to get themselves into a state when they are chanting that they transcend as well. The Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart is responsible for this recording, one that documents these chants from the Gyoto Tantric Monastic University. Hart states: "They are not chanting for themselves and salvation. They are chanting for every living thing, for China, Chinese people, Tibetan people, American people, every being."

The sound that these monks form with their voice is really unnerving. It is revealed that the vocals on the World Peace cd have been multi-tracked but there is a reason behind this. It is to emulate the 100's of monks chanting at the same time. It really sounds amazing. I can't describe it. Similar to throat singing but with that many people behind it it makes it sound so much more. Tibetan Chants for World Peace is note everyday listening. No, but I do recommend you try and hear a track or two for yourself to find out what goes on behind those walls.

Thirty years ago, the Grateful Dead played a series of concerts at the foot of the Sphinx in Giza, Egypt that went down in history both for their ambition and their myriad near-disasters. Hihglights from those concerts are finally getting an official release on the two-disc set Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 1978. “I went into eternity,” says Bob Weir of the experience. Click below for more on these infamous shows, including how the band employed a pair of camels after their equipment truck broke down.

Today I count my blessings one by one, as through grace and luck via Craigslist, I was able to secure a last minute pair of free tickets for last night's WFMU sponsored Wire gig. Somehow, this one slipped through the cracks, and I was certain I'd be standing outside paying for what otherwise was a completely free gig, but in the end, everything worked out for the better. Especially after last May's riveting Seaport show I would have kicked myself several times over for missing one of my favorite bands at a significantly improved venue.

I arrived a mere hour after the doors opened, expecting the Fillmore to run late, as it generally tends to, but as I claimed my spot on the balcony, Wire took to the stage at 9pm sharp, just a few minutes after I'd settled. Though I was generally curious to see Times New Viking, I already counted my second blessing of the evening, and was already grateful for an early evening out.

At this point, it's hard not to compare both Wire gigs. Though I generally had more fun at the Seaport, anxious to see one of my favorite bands in the flesh, bouncing around in the front row without a care in the world, last night's set was superior in every which way. A more intimate affair, a slightly extended setlist, and a much better sound system which balanced each instrument while pushing volume to the maximum capacity. Wire were in top form, to boot, fresh from a few months of touring in support of Object 47, their latest art-punk opus. The setlist sprinkled in several new tunes with various highlights from their career, including 'Silk Skin Paws,' 'Being Sucked In Again,' and a rather fiery version of 2002's 'I Don't Understand.' The band also tossed a few rarities into the mix, including a yet-to-be recorded gem titled 'He Knows' and a rare live-only track 'Underwater Experiences,' which is only available on the band's experimental 1981 live record Document and Eyewitness. A real treat, through and through.

Just as before, the crowd called out for the hits right from the start, and the band kept shirking the requests cheekily. Guitarist/vocalist Colin Newman recalled a similar incident from last May where a woman shouted, "play what you damn well want, you're going to anyway," which again earned a series of supportive shouts from the crowd. Meanwhile bassist/vocalist Graham Lewis disarmed the audience's cries for 'I Am the Fly' by exclaiming that he was as well. That said, Wire did deliver a few popular tunes, including 'The 15th,' 'Pink Flag,' and of course, '12XU,' a rather intense and sloppy rendition which ended the evening with a roar. Not my favorite number of the evening, but quite a way to end, especially after three unexpected encores. So unexpected actually, that the Fillmore staff pulled down the digital projection screen prematurely, as one quarter of the crowd made a hasty exit.

To those not lucky enough to score a golden ticket to the evening's event may have caught the live on-air broadcast happening simultaneously. I was hoping to link to an archived version for your listening pleasure, but it seems as if the infamous freeform station has not recorded the show for future rebroadcasting. That said, many thanks to WFMU for another year of solid radio programming and outstanding free shows. If you missed out, make it a priority to catch Wire next time they come around! Otherwise, here's the setlist from last night's gig:

1.
