Sam Sparro's newest U.S release is his self titled album Sam Sparro. The U.K. DJ has a very fresh and original groove. His dance jams are full of synthesizer, but at the same time are very harmonious, full of heart and soul. "Too Many Questions" is an awesome track that sort of reminds me of Jamiroquai*. "Black and Gold" is his promoted single which I am absolutely addicted to right now. The thing I like most about Sam Sparro is that he puts a new millennium twist on an 80's sound. The whole time I listen to the album I have visions of break dancing crews, The Warriors (the movie, not the basketball team, although Run TMC did start in the late 80s if I am not mistaken), and Thriller. A good example of what I mean is my favorite track "Sally". This song sounds like a lost Billy Ocean top ten smash. So if you like 80's dance music like MJ and Billy Ocean, you will love this album. Also, I highly recommend getting Sam Sparro in it's entirety as there isn't one bad song on the record, and there are some other solid tracks not mentioned in my review.

*Virtual Insanity was a killer video by the way

Way to go Fish-Van!
It’s time’s like these that I regret giving other albums four stars when I was on the fence of wither it
deserved three or four. Then an album like this comes along and you know instantly that it deserves no
less then four stars. To date, this is ‘The Flower Kings’ best album. Everything comes together so well,
and for once ‘The Flower Kings’ didn’t over stretch their reach, which they’ve been known to do. They
kept this album simple, and it pays off so well in the end. The listener doesn’t feel overwhelmed after
listening to this album, and it’s just a very enjoyable listen from start to finish with absolutely no low
points at all from the first song to the last.
After listening to this album a number of times, one thing seems to be apparent throughout the album,
that being that it’s weird. The first thing to show this is the album cover. Its half fish, half van….a
Mervan if you will. But this album presents many very strange sounds to the forefront. The haunting
fluctuating guitar and keyboard sounds found in old sci-fi films when aliens come down are scattered
throughout the album. It adds to the overall effect of the sound.
The album starts off with a bang with the first song ‘One More Time’. The explosion of sound found
within the first few minuets grabs the listener’s attention immediately and capturing the mood and tone
of the album. From there on in, we get great ‘Flower Kings’ sounds that we’ve grown to love, with no
low points at all.
The odd thing about this album (among a lot of other things) is the epical 25:50 minuet song ‘Love is
the Answer’ (what was the question again?) is the weakest song on the album, when it’s customary
for ‘The Flower Kings’ strongest song on their previous albums usually fall on their longer songs on the
album. It just seems as though this song is not as well grounded as the other songs, never really
establishing a foundation. This is almost 26 minuets of great and beautiful music, but structurally
speaking, this isn’t really such a good song. Luckily, it flows unnoticeably into its next song ‘Trading my
Soul’, which picks up the peaces. The end guitar on this song is superb, a real treat and it’s this point
that really makes the song so powerful.
‘The Sum of No Reason’ is a nice long song, although no where near the length of ‘Love is the Answer’.
After the grand ending of ‘Trading my Soul’ the song starts off in a soft mood, only to slam you back
into that grand sound that started the album. Unlike ‘Love is the Answer’ this song has a defined
structure to the song, coming back to ‘I hope that what they say is true: that God can see through the
souls of men.’ True, ‘Love is the Answer’ has ‘there’s no such this as perfect….’ but it’s scattered
through different moods and tones. Musically, this technique is a nice change, but as noted before, for a
song, it’s not so enjoyable to listen to on its own.
Back to ‘The Sum of No Reason’, it’s a very enjoyable song, taking the listener through a series of
different moods, tones, and places. Again, it holds onto the very ‘strange’ sounds which make this
album very definitive among other ‘Flower Kings’ albums. It even uses a great stand alone guitar sound
that ‘Trading my Soul’ used, making this song so enjoyable. After this song we get the weirdest song on
the album, and posibly in 'Flower Kings' history: ‘Flight 999 (Brimstone Air)’ using countless sound
effects and strange time signatures. I love how this song comes together near the end, as through all
musicians for the first part of the song were just playing what they felt should be played and then
coming together to put everything in it’s right place.
The final song on the album ‘Life in Motion’ brings the weirdness home, starting with what sounds
like ‘the Garden Party’ from Pink Floyd. But it brings us right back to that place which the previous
songs set up. It uses the usual ‘Flower Kings’ sound and attitude, what makes this song so great, and
one of my favorite ‘Flower Kings’ songs is the end, where you think the song stops, but that guitar picks
right back up to play us out. If you thought the ending of ‘Trading my Soul’ and the mid section of ‘The
Sum of No Reason’ had an impact, this has nothing on them. It’s the build up that makes this one so
monumental. It starts off slow and slowly grows and becomes irresistible, you find yourself wanting to
hear it over and over again. It reminds me of ‘Love Supreme’ off of ‘Adam and Eve’, it has the same
feel as ‘Growing up filling up’ when they say ‘It’s like coming home, coming home again.’ Such an
incredible song.
So in the end, this album is a very solid four star album. The closest ‘The Flower Kings’ have come to a
complete masterpiece. I wouldn’t rate this as a masterpiece simply because this is 78 minuets of great
music and nothing more. There’s really no point at which I find myself ‘wowed’ at the music, which only
true masterpieces can do, but on the same page, I never find myself board. If you only get one ‘Flower
Kings’ album, I’d suggest this one, it really is their best.
Four stars for the very strange Fish-Van.

He played keyboards for The Hawkins Family from 1977 until he left to collaborate with James Cleveland in 1983. Later he worked with jazz artists Nancy Wilson and Rodney Franklin and pop singer Philip Bailey.

Original Release Date: 1986

Daryl Coley - Oh The Lamb [2001]

This recording also seems to establish Beloved, his 14 member ensemble, as his permanent backup singers moving Daryl from the male soloist club with Desmond Pringle and Alvin Slaughter to the ranks of choir director with artists such as Richard Smallwood and James Hall. To set this new deal in concrete Daryl doesn't even lead every song. In some songs we don't hear his amazing voice at all. Instead he opts to let some of the voices of Beloved bask in the spotlight, just like a loving pastor.
The album starts off with the rousing, "Because He's God", which Daryl leads with a female soloist from Beloved. The album then continues into the midtempo "II Chronicles", in which the ensemble shows off their vocal skills mimicking Reverend Coley's riffs. Next is "He'll Make A Way", written by Reverend Coley's teenage son Teceion Coley. Other standouts on the album are the studio recorded cover of Milton Brunson & the Thompson Community Singers "For The Good Of Them", the salsa flavored "Lift Your Name On High", lead by an unnamed member of Beloved, the deep lyrics of "Silent Scream" written by Gospel hit maker V. Michael Mc Kay are mangled by an unnamed male who spoon feed's Daryl the lyrics to the song [How Kirk Franklin of him?]. It would have been better for Daryl to do this one alone. Then there's the jazzy "I Need You", lead by Reverend Coley and the rousing and modulative "He's Worthy", led by an unnamed female member of Beloved. The album ends with the studio recorded "He Can Work It Out", lead by Coley.

Besides having all of these talented folk from Beloved being unnamed with their songs, the album's great!

Daryl Coley-Beyond the Veil: Live at Bobby Jones Gospel XIII [LIVE][1996]

Daryl Coley is by far the most talented, versatile, gifted song writer, composer, and singer in the genre of Gospel music. He has an incredible quality vocal range and style of music. One that I've NEVER heard before. Not only is he talented, but his background vocal choir are SUPERIOR-they're Breathtaking!

When I first listened to this tape, I thought I was caught up in the rapture. Daryl sings with his whole heart and soul. The worship songs usher you to the place of sweet communion with Jesus. My most favorite is "Glory"; followed by "Beyond the Veil".

All track info is in the comment section...

Unlike the wretched "Exit Stage Left" which was plauged by terrible recording problems, this albums avoids the problems which make "Exit" nearly unlistenable. Unlike "Exit" and the masterful "All the World's A Stage" which present one live show, "A Show of Hands" presents cuts from different concerts and tours.
As an attempt to show case different tours, it lacks the cohesion and sustained energy that make a "Rush in Rio" and "R30" such triumphs. As an anthology of different shows, the shifts between the different concerts is often jarring.
It's absurd to label this as the "worst" Rush live album--since its clearly far superior to "Exit, Stage Left." (And "Exit's" problems are not performance-related, but as I note above, technical.)
As a matter of personal preference, I like a live album to be of one show, a snapshot, so to speak, of a band's work and spirit at a single moment in time.
For the new Rush fan I would not recommend it. "Different Stages" would be a much better intro to their live work. It showcases their more recent work as well as the pre-"Hemispheres" albums on that fantastic third concert disc.
All of that having been said, "A Show of Hands" should be in every serious Rush fan's collection. It is really completely inaccurate to describe Rush's 80's oeuvre as "the synth period" since the use of synths began with 1976's "2112". The shift is gradual and doesn't support the label the period is too often given.
As a sampling of their live shows in the 80s, it does a good job. To repeat, I would have preferred one show but the anthology approach does provide a more global perspective on one of the most successful concert acts of the last thirty years.
1. The studio section includes two originals & two covers. The originals "Sister Change" & "Tales of the Unexpected" has Marino stretching out his farthest. Both songs almost bordering on heavy fusion. Marino just cuts out solid magnificent mountains of jazzy guitar runs at the speed of light, he is at once heavy, ethereal, concise & commanding, & his rhythm section cuts it through out following Frank like a car chase down a winding mountain road. "Norwegian Wood" & "All Along the Watchtower" add even more of an ethereal twist than was on the originals. Honestly, Marino made these songs his own with his unique approch, making these songs float on a bed of sweetly scented dream like airwaves carressing my ears & entering my brain like billowing tufts of opium smoke. I was addicted to their dreamy embrace.
The live section features heavy, heavy, gut wrenching blues/metal originals with "Down, Down, Down" & "Door of Illusion" hitting that blues, funk, metal path that was only trodden down by fellow contemporaries Robin Trower & Pat Travers this convincingly in the 70's... hell, at anytime. The live work here on par with Mahogany Rush's excellent "Live" album, leaving one battered & bruised & begging for more!
"Tales of the Unexpected" is Marino's crowning achievement, never to be topped in my opinion. Frank put out numerous albums afterward, but each album just seemed to lose focus to the point Frank was parodying himself. Funny enough, is was not until 2000 with the excellent "Eye of the Strom" that Marino captured past glories.
Marino has always been an artist that was hit & miss, his failures just that, but his success's, oh so sweet! Frank & his band Mahogany Rush can now be looked at as a band that was definitely born of Hendrix, but also pushed the grand man's ideas, & eventually came on to their own being, one of low valleys, but also soaring peaks that beg to be climbed.
1.

This week, the video evaluation team had three new videos to watch from a No. 1 selling country artist, the hottest new CMT Crossroads pairing and a future country star. Let’s let the streams roll:

Artist: Sugarland
Video: “Already Gone”
Director: Shaun Silva

(Either JavaScript is not active or you are using an old version of Adobe Flash Player. Please install the newest Flash Player.)

The gorgeously golden-hued video has the duo performing on top of a field of cars. It also tells the stories of a child striking out on their own, first loves and heartbreak and moving past those experiences.

Comments: “Beautiful.” “Great song.” “That’s my favorite song on the album.” “I just love these guys.” “Yet another hit.”

Artist: 38 Special and Trace Adkins
Title: “Wild-Eyed Southern Boys”
Director: Ivan Dudynsky

An excerpt from the upcoming CMT Crossroads, the pairing tackles 38 Special’s classic barn-buster with a ton of energy and excitement that clearly pumped up the capacity crowd.

Comments: “Our audience will love that.” “Sorry I missed that taping.” “Trace smiled a lot and looks happy.” “What a great song.” “Trace is just at the top of his game here.”

Artist: Katie Armiger
Title: “Unseen”
Director: Stephen Shepherd

Katie sings her song in a bare, gray room on a chair. The song is a the story of a girl who felt her relationship was only surface deep.

Comments: “That’s definitely her best song.” “The song is better than the video.” “She’s got a good voice and stage presence.” “The production may be too pop.”

We decided to add Sugarland’s latest to hot shot rotation, the rockin’ Crossroads clip to heavy rotation and Lady Antebellum’s latest, “Lookin’ For a Good Time” (which was placed on hold originally), to heavy rotation.
