Forth album by Everon, and again a good one all the way - entitled fantasma from 2000. I always like this
band and their heavy prog combined with symphonic elements. I guess the main reason I like so much
this band is because of the voice of Oliver Philips, excellent vocalist who really knows to sing at the
highest level any time the usic needs him, but also of course the instrumetation is good. So Fantasma is
another great album of Everon with nice blend between heavy riffs and melodic arrangemets , specially on
keys. The best pieces are : the opening track Men Of Rust, here Everon simply shines, the folower Perfect
Remedy and the piece that ends the CD - Ghosts - simply a great tune, maybe among the best Everon
ever created. So all in all a solid 3 stars, a good album all the way, but not realy a masterpiece of prog
music, more like 3,5. Similar band at some point maybe Enchant. Worth to listen to this band if you want
something comfortable and enjoying music in the same time.

After you listen to Everon you won't be able to know why they are so unknown, even in the prog
world. Everon is not only a typical progressive band. It's impossible to tell which is their style:
sometimes it's neoprog, but then you can hear a lot of classical progressive rock influences with
plenty of heavy metal riffs. The best part of this, is that Everon is not another Dream Theater rip
off; it's unique, both melancholic and dynamic. North is their latest album, and after a long hiatus
they came back with the same old power and a new freshness.
The CD begins with Hands a powerful and bombastic song with a great chorus leaded by Phillip's
magnificent voice and feeling. From the beginning you can hear the Everon's trademark sound: heavy
riffs yet a very melodic atmosphere and an outstanding feeling.
One of the highlights of the album is, without a doubt, Brief encounter. A dramatic song filled
with a gorgeous orchestration.
From where I stand and Test of time both begin with a cello, but the first one is a symphonic
ballad and the second is an step forward on Everon's evolution to a lighter sound. Maybe From where
I stand is a more complex song, more mature and intimate, but Test of time is far from being bad.
North has a great atmosphere, sometimes sad and full of uncertainty. A perfect mixture of
feelings, which take place in one of the best songs on the album.
While North was kind of typical for Everon, South of London is very different from the whole
album. The sound is modern and it incorporates some electronic elements. Some say it's popy, and
it's usual the eternal complaining from die hard prog fans, but the song itself is great.
Wasn't it good is another intimate song, probably the most emotive track on North. The orchestra
is another highlight in this song.
Woodworks is joyful instrumental track that leads to Islanders, which is, in my opinion, the
weakest track on the album, but again it's very good. Judith's voice fits perfectly the song. North
closes with Running, probably the most progressive song we hear in this
Defining Everon is difficult, but maybe the word brilliant could describe best their music and,
obviously North which is one of the best CDs of 2008.

With no members reviews so far I think I better write a short one as this fine CD deserves some
praise.
Everon have achieved high standards for most of this decade, everything they have released has
been at least very good to excellent so if that's my point of view of the past then it comes as no
surprise that the new CD North I believe is perhaps their crowning glory. Do not confuse Everon
as a Neo Prog Band or think of them as Prog Metal even it becomes very clear listening to North that
Everon are a mold of their own I can't even think of a band that sounds like them or even close .
The reviews I like to read are the ones that break down the specifics unfortunately I loaned this CD
from a friend only for a few days and I have given it back to him and I'm waiting for my copy to
arrive in the post but honestly every song on this CD moved me the lyrics have a introspective skill
that I would put in the league of Fish, Peter Gabriel.
North is a very fulfilling CD in places it makes me a little sad and in others provides hope I can
personaly relate to the songs I think perhaps many of you will too if you give North a try.

Thanks for reading, Yorkie X

I might as well agree with Semismart´s review: Everon indeed sounds like no other. Their music is
familiar, yet you can´t really pigeonhole it. There are some obvious influences here and there (like
Rush and Marillion, to name just two). Although labeled as neo prog in PA, I´ve always heard other
sites and magazines to call them prog metal. To me they both missed the point. Maybe art rock or
heavy prog would be closer to what they really are. Anyway, you have to hear them to understand.
Everon is Everon.
Fantasma (´ghost´ in portuguese) was the first album I ever owned by Everon, and like the others, it
took me some time to really appreciate their music. Years, in fact, since when I bought it I was
expecting a prog metal band sound. Although Fantasma is heavier their earlier works, like Venus, it
is not metal in any way. Everon music was always too proggy and the heavy guitars bursts that are
kind of their trademark, along with some great piano lines, is something very particular and unique.
Quite interesting, after a few listenings.
This is a very emotional record, since the main inspiration was the death of a dear friend in a car
accident (and to whom this CD is dedicated). The songwriting and perfomances are very strong and
convincing. Oliver Philip´s vocals may not be everyon´s cup of tea, but sure it fits Everon´s sound
perfectly. As ever, the musicanship is awesome and very much used for the music´s sake, there are
not much noodling here. It all helped by the right production (done by Philips himself and drummer
Christian Moos, who also handles the engineering) and the very good arrangements.
A different prog album, by an original and different band. Maybe their very best, up to that point.
It takes some time to sink in, but then this is the trademark of most great prog bands. Excellent
addition to any prog music colletion. Four stars.

Everon is kind of a mistery to me. I can´t really tell why (hence the mistery?). Their musicanship is obviously enormous, as it is the talent of their singer/guitarrist/keyboardsman/songwriter Oliver Philips. Acutually this is the kind of guy you can call genius: he is obviously too much an original talent to be ignored, even if you don´t like his work. Still their music did not grab me at first, even after repeated listenings.
Everon takes a lot to sink in, at least for me. Their music is far from what you call neo progressive (although some Marillion influences can be traced here and there). The music is nothing like you should expect from someone influenced by Pink Floyd, Camel or early Genesis (that´s what I call neo prog). In fact it is very original and interesting, although quite accessible. I remember I bought this album because of the much praised reviews in many magazines I saw at the time of its release, but could not like it in the very same way I did not immediatly enjoyed their follow up (the equally praised Fantasma). Sometimes I thought their music was too heavy to be plain prog, but also too proggy to be metal. Yet it was not prog metal in any way. Heavy prog would be a more fitting maybe, but their music is hard to label.
As for the technical aspects of this CD, there is not much to complain. The production done by Philips himself with drummer Moos is top notch. Philips is quite convincing as a singer, although I think some people will have trouble ajusting to his style of vocal delivering. All his songs are very emotional and strong, combining the lush keyboards with bursts of heavy guitars and drumming (but again not in the prog metal vein). Not much noodling here, fortunatly. Those guys can cut it, but they use their obvious great technique to enhance the music as a whole rather than go for ego trips.
It was only recently I found Venus to be a CD of high caliber. After sitting in my shelf for years I decided to give it another chance and I was astonished by its sheer power and melodies. Ok, I agree with most reviewers here in PA: there is no middle ground with Everon, you either hate it or love it. Although it took some time to make up my mind about it, I came to find I love it. Some prog works are hard to understand and enjoy. Everon is surely one of them, but I´m glad I did give them another shot. Looking for something both unique, strong and accessible? Try this one. Four strong stars.

In one of my earlier reviews of an Everon album I said that the reviews of this bands albums could be
quite short because there is a very obvious Everonsound that shines through on all of their albums. And
it's more a matter of like it or not that will determine ones rating more or less. Maybe that's the case with
more bands but I feel it's very much a feature of Everons music.
And that's also the case with their latest North. It's almost as if I'm listening to one of their previous
albums especially if you listen superficially. Of their predecessors I believe Venus and Flesh were a bit
more out of the ordinary but North is one of those very recognizable ones like the others.
But that doesn't have to be a problem or point of criticism of course because if you like their sound: why
bother ? Many proggers feel that originality and innovation are important factors in progressive music and
they are probably right but what's wrong with a feeling of coming home with a certain album and say:
yes, this is my thing, I love it. And that is the case with Everon for me, you know what you can expect
from these guys and there is nothing wrong with that. If you want something new or different: there are
some 3700 other bands and artists on this site !
Right now I'm listening to the entire album once again and arriving at track 9 by now it's all very familiar
but just as I say this track 9 is actually different because a lady called Judith Stüber does a very nice
vocal job here, great ballad. The other 9 songs are simply Everon, a very good Everon that is. 4 stars.

Paradoxes is the debut studio album from german prog rock band Everon. I
emphasised that they are a German band for a reason which I´ll get back to
later.
The music that Everon plays is a mix of neo prog and soft progressive heavy
metal. I think there are many great moments on this album when it comes to the
compositions and equally when it comes to the playing which is above average for
conventional neo prog bands. The songs are a bit too similar in dynamics though.
The worst problem here is the vocals from Oliver Philips though. As such he has
a good voice but his german accent is terrible and totally ruins my experience.
I can´t look past it even though I try hard. It´s not that I normally can´t
accept accented singing. It can actually be quite charming sometimes. Listen to
a band like Nosound where it works wonderful even though the singing is strongly
accented. On Paradoxes it sounds horrible though.
The musicianship is as mentioned excellent and I´m especially happy about the
drumming from Christian Moos.
The production is really good. Crystal clear and grand.
The cover artwork suits the music well.
I hate to be negative when the music is as promising as it is on Paradoxes but there are simply too
much of my listening pleasure which is dependent on the vocals. Had the vocals not been so heavily
accented I would have rated this album 3 stars, but with the heavy accent ( which reminds me of II
world war movies where american and english actors are instructed to speak with a german accent) I
can´t give this more than a 2 star rating. I´ll probably receive hate mail for this review but this is my
subjective opinion.

This was recorded at the same time as "Bridge" and the band was originally going to release them at the same time but then decided to stagger the release dates. This one is much mellower than "Bridge' with a lot of ballad-like tracks. For me this isn't in the same class as "Bridge" on several levels, but the title track alone makes it worth a listen.
"And Still It Bleeds" opens with piano as cello arrives quickly followed by a crushing sound. This will be one of the few times other then on the title track we'll hear this kind of power. It settles in as vocals come in on the scene before 1 1/2 minutes. The chorus is catchy.Themes are repeated. We get a calm with fragile vocals 6 1/2 minutes in.Cello ends it. "Already Dead" opens with percussion, vocals and piano.Guest female vocals arrive.Full sound before 2 minutes with dual vocals. "Pictures Of You" is the best one so far.Once it gets going the percussion and guitar sounds good.Piano becomes prominant.Touching lyrics as well. "Flesh" is over 14 minutes and it takes 6 minutes before the heaviness arrives but it's worth the wait. The heavy and lighter sections are contrasted very well.Great song. "Missing From The Chain" has an orchestral-like intro as fragile vocals come in with violin.Cool lyrics too in this ballad. "The River" opens with piano as drums and vocals come in.The guest female vocalist is back.Themes are repeated. "Half As Bad" features more piano and vocals.More great lyrics too. "Back In Sight" opens with some atmosphere before the guitar starts to soar.Vocals a minute in. Some heaviness 4 1/2 minutes followed by some excellent guitar.
Good album but after hearing "Fantasma" and "Bridge" it's a little disappointing.

This band was such a pleasant surprise for me when i discovered them through their "Fantasma" record. What makes them somewhat unique in the prog world is that their focus lyrically is on love and relationships, plus they are so darn emotional.I really think singer, lyricist, keyboardist and lead guitarist Oliver Philipps is one of the most talented men i've come across. This particular album "Bridge" continues with the topic of relationships, and the emotion is again pouring out of this record. How does he do that?
"Bridge Theme" is a 2 minute intro of what sounds like a toy xylophone or something with fragile vocals. What is so cool is that same melody that was just played so simply is repeated powerfully by the whole band.Killer guitar ends it as it blends into "Across The Land" where vocals come in passionately.Piano and vocals are contrasted with the full sound throughout. The guitar starts to rip it up after 2 minutes. "Juliet" features percussion and vocals. The vocals get passionate as themes are repeated. The song ends with a growl. "Travelling Shoes" is an emotional ballad of fragile vocals, acoustic guitar and synths. "Driven" opens with beautiful guitar as vocals and drums arrive.Riffs a minute in as vocals get angry and the sound powerful. It's about the emotions of this man who is trying to forgive his partner. "If You Were Still Mine" in contrast to the last song shows him when he has healed and forgiven, and he relates to her that if she was still his he would ... and lists all the things. So emotional.Unbelieveable.Piano and drums mostly with heartbreaking lyrics. My God. The sound becomes fuller on the chorus. Some power 3 1/2 minutes in with an uplifting guitar solo. "Ten Years Late" is a bombastic tune.I like the section before 3 minutes where the guitar starts to peel the paint. "Not The Time" opens with piano as fragile vocals and synths join in.Powerful soundscape 2 minutes in.This contrast continues.Incredibly emotional lyrics on this one.Too close to home for me. "Puppet Show" is an instrumental where they seem to be having a lot of fun. These guys are phenomenal players. "Carousel" is heavy with vocals. "Harbour" again has some amazing lyrics that are eerily close to home once again. So emotional especially the chorus. You are awesome Oliver! "Bridge" opens with piano before guitar joins in.Synths 1 1/2 minutes in as vocals then full sound arrive.Riffs follow.Blistering guitar 4 minutes in.A catchy rhythm before 5 minutes.Piano ends it.Funny, but Oliver writes a small letter to Bily Joel apologizing for borrowing some of his chords in the outro. He says "I was aware of what i was doing, but it just fitted so nicely i couldn't resist." Then he tells him to feel free to borrow something from EVERON's music if he so wishes.Haha.
This album isn't as good as "Fantasma" in my opinion, but it's still worth 4 stars.

Do you want to discover the perfect mix between Pain of Salvation and Dream Theater? Then, The
Window Purpose is your album...
Thanks to the marvellous production, this record sounds just great... Oliver Phillips and Christian Moos,
both part of the band Everon, are also producers... They have their own studio, where they produce
other bands apart from Everon. And Wolverine is one of these bands... And they are really really good!
This is the only album I've heard from them, but surely I will hear more in a near future, because I'm
really impressed with the quality of this debut.
The Window Purpose is not really original. Like I said, if you take some of the riffs and the keyboard
sound (specially the Kevin More's one...) from Dream Theater, and you mix it with some of the Pain of
Salvation ambiences and melancholy, you'll get something similar to this album... Nevertheless, I think
that Wolverine have enough personality to make this album recognisable and original. Like the
electronic elements they sometimes use (have the members of Riverside heard this album? I'd swear
they have) and the use of the drummer's growls... This growls are specially cool, because they are
used like an emotional and expressive weapon. They are really appropiate, specially to give strenght to
some choruses!
In the choruses, the Oliver Phillip's voice is also hearable (Leaving Yesterday, His Cold Touch, Toward
Loss...), and together with the female's guest voclas, they give the album a lot of vocal richness... Of
course, thanks too to the pretty good Stefan Zell vocals, who sounds powerful and inspired the whole
record through. His voice is deep and expressive, but sometimes he surprises with some nice high-
pitched shouting! The rest of the musicians are also competent... The rythmic section is not spectacular,
but they make their work really well. The guitars are rich and variated (I absolutely enjoy some
parts...), and so are the keyboards: I LOVE the keys in every song! Specially in Coma and Toward
Loss... I really don't know where Wolverine took this keyboardist called Andras Baglien, but he's a
really talented guy!
I'm still impressed with the keyboards in Toward Loss and Coma...
Comments of the re-release version: apart from a renowed artwork (wich is really beatiful...), the re-
release in Earache Records has a ten minute long track called Again! I recommend its listening,
because is really good... I think the instrumental developement is great, and some parts are really
hard, almost extreme metal. It even surpases some of the tracks of the album!
Best songs: His Cold Touch (the initial guitar melodies are just fantastic... And so are the lyrics, really
touching), Leaving Yesterday (marvellous chorus for a semi-ballad, vocally stunning...), Toward Loss (it
start very Dream Theater-like... But then comes the growls mised with the clean vocals, to make a
original and different track), Coma (stunning beginning... And the best solos in the album, specially the
first one) and Post-Life (Stefan sings his best here... And it's a really proper ending) But honestly
speaking, I think this album has no flaws. I just can't mention one weak track in The Window Purspose!
Conclusion: if this album was a bit more original, I would given it five stars... But the evident
similarities with Dream Theater and Pain of Salvation, give some sensation of déjà-vu to the
experienced prog-metal listener. Nevertheless, the quality of this music is really high, and so is the
luxurious production and the instruments playing. So if you like melancholic prog-metal... I just can say
that this is one of the best album from this style I've ever heard, despite it has some lack of originality.
My rating: ****
