The Sophmore realese by Detroit Rapper Trick Trick and follow up to "The People vs." which had the notable single "Welcome to Detroit" F/Eminem

This album starts similar to his 1st LP with a intro/skit that like a movie pre-climax scene gets you to anticapating the first song

Trick Trick (the song)-
I find this song to be very hard its a nice beat with a thunderous clap and Trick raps his graspy voice over lashing out at any and everything. But this song is a pounding and a testament to real gangster rap

Unfortunatly this song is followed up by lesser songs that seem slightly the same

U can get ****ed up-
is a okay song but doesnt really hit any high points but trick does imply that if you come to detroit you better ask him for a pass

Who Want It F/Eminem-
For anyone who heard welcome to detroit this will come as a dissapointment. Not because this is a bad song but more that it does not surpass how good there previous effort was. Eminem raps in his seemingly less serious new persona I find his feat on this similar to the one that apeared on T.I. previous album entitled "Touchdown" Both rappers have good versus but a little bit of a letdown

The next two songs again are not bad but no real substance or new vibe to them he does try to put out his crew in both though
Can't **** With My City-
Somethin 4 These Hataz-

Let's Work & Work skit
This song is very similar to Bread on his previous album but he does point out that the real hard workers will always get there money

Hold On Produced by DR. Dre
This album is quite possible one of the greatest Dre beats I've heard it has a slinking strings and a solemn beat Trick rap well on this track but the beat is the best part about this song proving once again Dre is the best producer ever

Let It Fly F/Ice Cube & lil' Jon
This song would of found more success but unfortunatly for Trick the Crunk period has ended but you can definitly get rowdy to this song

All Around The World f/Royce Da 5'9"
This song is a high point and probably the lightest song ont he album Royce and Trick both drop nice versus and anyone waiting for the Eminem & Royce reunion track this is a sign that were one step closer to having one

2getha 4eva F/Proof, Esham & Kid Rock-
This ode to Run DMC is great and a very easy listen very staright forward very good Hip Hop song but the sad part is it will be the last Poof verse we will hear in its original form but all contributors our a testiment to Detroits shine

Follow me produced by Eminem-
This song is a wierd tongue twisting slang song which makes very little since but hay if you figure it out he'll give you 10 grand good luck

Theres three more songs which our more of the same and farley forgetable
MF Pimp-
Get it Crackin-
You Told Me-

Crazy Produced by Eminem
This is a song that is emotionally raw and a good listen over a good Em beat about the betaryel of a woman

Let It Go-
The album closes with a soulful finish featuring Tric tricks family choir

The Album is more of the same but when it comes to detroit gangster rap Trick Trick is pound for pound with the best and has the rep to make it beliavable. But when he went outside the box with songs like "2getha 4 ever and around the world it pays off. Some great producing from trick, Em And Dre as well

4 out of 5 Stars

Local Minneapolis indie rock band Mightly Fairly release their new disc, Big Words and Power Chords, this Friday with a CD release show at Bunkers. More than just a one night stand, this is a band worth taking home to meet Mom and Dad.

This week we had the opportunity to chat with lead vocalist and guitarist Mischa Suemnig and drummer Joseph Papke about the new album, the MSP music scene and what it’s like to have a track on MTV’s The Real World…

Who is Mighty Fairly?
Mischa Suemnig: We are an indie-pop 4some from Minneapolis. Started in 2004, we’ve just finished our second album Big Word and Power Chords. We’ve been lucky enough to attend SxSW 2006 and 2007, Hyperactive Music festival and to tour in 15 states. We’ve been included on a few compilation CDs, won 3 songwriting awards and we’ve never had a label or manager. We like doing stuff ourselves, naturally with the help of some of our very generous friends, family and fans. DIY FTW

Joseph Papke: The perfect bon mot to riposte the last crappy band someone dragged you to see.

How do you guys fit into the Minneapolis music scene?
Mischa Suemnig: The Minneapolis scene is very open to lots of different kinds of music, from hip-hop to singer/songwriter. We’ve got some favorite bars to play at, like The Nomad, The Turf Club and Bunker’s. Also, some local favorite bands who’ve been very nice to us over the years, Alva Star, Kid Dakota, The Small Cities and Mercer. In reviews from our first album, we got typified as having the ‘prototypical Minneapolis pop sound’…so, I guess we fit in OK.

Joseph Papke: With lube.

For a band who’s only been around for 4 years, you’ve been played on more than 280 radio stations. Do you guys have a fervent fan base or just a lot of free time?
Mischa Suemnig: We don’t have fans as much as we do disciples. We baptize them and then initiate…nevermind. Yeah, we have a few folks around the country that come to shows when we tour through. When we’re out of state, it’s really fun to stop by the radio stations that play us. They treat us very nice. And, yeah, I think we work pretty hard at trying to get the word out (read: whoring ourselves).

Joseph Papke: Neither frankly. We’re hoping the new album generates one or the other.

You had some songs featured on MTV’s Real World. Which songs and can you confirm that getting tracks on the Real World automatically gets you laid?
Mischa Suemnig: Wake up, Last Stand Started and Superheroes from the first album got played on The Real World:Sydney and The Real World:Hollywood. The 1983 Buick Station Wagon that Kellie and I do acoustic tours in is like spanish fly.

Joseph Papke: “Wake Up” and another one—I don’t know which, I don’t have cable. And yes, it does, but not with people you’d actually want to sleep with.

Tell me about your new album.
Mischa Suemnig: We’ve finally released an album with Glockenspiel. It’s been my life long dream. It’s more of a rock record than the previous, slightly less acoustic (though every song still has acoustic guitar on it) and more rock out with your rooster out kind of deal. Still couldn’t do an album without 4 part harmony on every other song…probably the most fun part of the recording process for us is to sit around in the control room and sing in 4 part harmony at each other and then argue about who’s part sucks.

Joseph Papke: It was recorded and produced by us. It features eleven original songs. The songs are quite good. The cd fits into a medium sized pocket for on-the-go types.

What was the writing/recording process like?
Mischa Suemnig: I like the Michelangelo theory of creating. The marbel already contains the statue, your job is just to release it. Michelangelo believed God had put the statue there. In my case, I think it’s Timbaland. Recording was really different this time around. Last time we worked with the FICTION team of John Hermanson and Eric Fawcett. We had Erik Appelwick come in and play some wurly and keys too. Alex Oana mixed and mastered it…..So, we had lots of folks we really respected helping us out and keeping us honest. This time around it was just the 4 of us banging away and hoping it would come out OK.

Joseph Papke: Blissful. There’s nothing better than creating.

What’s your favorite track on the album and why?
Mischa Suemnig: Save Your Love. Lyrically, it speaks the most honestly about how I feel about love. If you’re not willing to hurt, you’re not ready to love or at least retain love. In terms of pop songs, it’s not the best, but it’s my favorite story on the record. I’ve always loved great stories inside of great songs and I think that is often what makes a song timeless is having both an engaging plot and a hook. This one at least has the narrative part.

Joseph Papke: It’s very hard to choose, but since you insist, I’d have to say “Closer to End” due to equal parts heartfelt sentiment and deliciously unquarantinable hooks.

Tell me about your upcoming CD release show.
Mischa Suemnig: We’re playing at Bunker’s on the 21st, music at 9pm’ish us at 11pm’ish. Very excited to have The Small Cities and Mercer playing with us. Two of our favorite local bands who are also crazy nice people.

Joseph Papke: We’ll be playing, you’ll be enjoying; it’s gonna work out great.

I was just talking to a friend about the movie Dude, Where’s My Car? yesterday. In attempting to persuade them to watch the Ashton Kutcher/Seann William Scott opus, I mentioned how it unexpectedly turns into a sci-fi movie, inferring that that twist is reason enough to catapult it into must-view status.

“Girls of Spring,” a willowy tune by Aan, is a similar work, with its own unexpected sci-fi connection. Though I wouldn’t have known it without talking to Bud Wilson, the man behind Aan’s delicate strings and layered, octave-jumping vocals. Below we chat about the sci-fi origins of the easygoing pop track, its meaning and fitting it is for Portland’s annual city-wide winter basement retreat. Cute girls also factor in. Judging by all that, I’d say this too sounds like the recipe for an excellent film. Hey Matt McCormick, wanna helm the project? I hear you just wrapped the other feature you were working on…

Q&A with Aan’s Bud Wilson:

What is the song about?
“Girls of Spring” is about being afraid of getting lonely. It’s knowing that as the weather turns here in Portland, people disappear, stow away in their homes and basements until light returns for more than a few hours a day and we can ride around without fenders again. But also it’s a celebration of the faction of us who are not afraid of the dismal gray rain, and find ways to stick it out with fervor and maintain satisfactory relationships through the coming season. Mainly it’s about cute girls.

How long did it take to write? Why did you write it?
The song was an afterthought. I’d just finished recording a different song that took a few days to get out. I had no intentions of spending another few hours pushing record. The riff came up quickly and there was no choice but to track it. I’d recently re-read one of my favorite stories by Madeline L’Engle, A Wind In the Door. In the book, there is a terrible happening called “Echthroi;” a blackness streaking across the universe turning something into nothing. I had a visual of this “Echthroi” erasing good folks with the coming wind. It’s some sci-fi stuff, but mix love and science fiction and that’s hot shit. It all was recorded in about an hour and a half.

What’s your favorite season?
My favorite season is the fall.

Why?
Picking apples off neighborhood trees. Dressing up to keep warm. Watching things die, knowing they’ll return soon enough when I’ve forgotten about them. It’s about dismissing those things that were bringing a person down and getting skeletal, keeping what’s essential.

What will you be doing in relation to your music during winter?
This winter I’m moving houses here in Portland. I’ll be looking for a drummer. I’ll be recording constantly, I hope. I’d like to find a positive place and make something a bit more uplifting, something wholesome. I’ll certainly be playing shows at Valentines and some of the smaller venues around. I just bought a monstrous bass amp so i’ll be driving the neighbors crazy with low end rumbles. Music is always and everything, the rest of my life wraps itself around it.

“Girls of Spring” will be officially released on a self-released E.P. in spring 2009 available digitally on itunes and in physical form at shows.

I think there were a few shocked people when it was announced that Thursday and Envy were going to be doing a split album together. Many couldn't see the connection between the two, myself included.

This project takes the older approach to a split, first half is Thursday, second half is Envy. The album starts out with "As He Climbed The Dark Mountain", a lofty song for Thursday but one that reminds you of the power this band is capable of. "In Silence" follows it up with a much more subdued instrumental. I love how they manage give it a crisp production and yet still pull of a distorted surface, and I love the piano. What seems like a continuation of the opening song, the band head out on "An Absurd and Unrealistic Dream of Peace". Thursday slow down once again for another moody instrumental called "Appeared and was Gone". Be careful around the 3.20 mark, it gets kinda crazy.

Japan's Envy is up next with a track called "An Umbrella Fallen Into Fiction". This atmospheric song really notifies you that you are listening to a different band. It gets all angry after a bit so be forewarned. The chaotic feel of "Isolation of a Light Source" is intense. If you haven't listened to Envy before, think of a Japanese Isis or Mogwai and you'll come close to the wonderful dynamics this band has to offer. I found the three tracks from Envy to be the best of the split.

This split is definitely not a necessity. It doesn't show other sides of either band. Instead, just a couple of songs that could get either bands fans into the other band.
