MTV Video Music Awards host Russell Brand’s controversial, rapid-fire comedy had the press room buzzing last night, and the British comic defended himself after the ceremony. “I feel a bit bad that I kept talking about their vows to chastity,” Brand told reporters of his comments about the Jonas Brothers (he repeatedly joked about the band’s purity rings). “And I’d like to take this opportunity to say, ‘No one ever have sex again. It’s a mad idea. What a crazy way to spend an evening.’ ” Brand said he had a “lovely time” hosting the awards. “I do think it was a comeback for Britney,” he said. “This is the resurrection of Britney Spears. I saw stigmata. And, I liked when Lil Wayne leaned over and touched my legs. I think he might be from another world and he has a message for us all.” Brand also called Republicans “evil” and suggested “we need to return to socialism.”

Britney Spears hit the press room basking in the afterglow of her three big wins. She smiled ear-to-ear holding her Moonmen and posing for the photographers. She didn’t talk to the press, but T.I. wasn’t shy about calling his own performance the best of the night. He also praised Spears and Brand. “Britney did her thing. It’s quite a comeback,” he said. As for Brand, “I think you have to push the envelope and think outside the box and he’s definitely doing that.”

Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington agreed. “Last year was probably one of the worst experiences of my professional career,” he told us. “It was terrible. This year’s show is much better.” His band’s “Shadow of the Day” picked up the award for Best Rock Video, and Joe Hahn said, “This is a cool video because it’s one that the whole band wasn’t in. It was just Chester and he carried the whole video. We’re trying to do different things so it feels good to win for that.”

The Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger informed us that the group roped in Missy Elliott to be in their next video for “Whatcha Think About That.” “It’ll be the Pussycat Dolls taken to the next level,” Scherzinger said. Doll Domination drops September 20th and the Dolls are plotting a world tour that starts in January 2009.

When a reporter asked presenter Paris Hilton about the Russell Brand-Jonas Brothers chastity controversy, Hilton said, “I think they are all really good kids. That’s something cool for a kid to keep so don’t pick on them for that.” Hilton added that her new music will be “very pop like Kylie Minogue.” A few contestants on Hilton’s new reality show also lingered backstage, telling Rolling Stone that they would get sued for $6 million if they revealed the winner. They did say that Hilton has permanently ditched her catchphrase “that’s hot” for “love’s it.”

If there was one hot thing Seth Green loved last night, it was Weezy’s ass. The actor got caught between Lil Wayne and T-Pain as they started their performance — not that he was complaining: “I gotta say, I almost squeezed Lil Wayne’s butt because it looked so firm and squeezable.”

Old buddy and Todd Rundgren aficionado Mark (aka Markadelphia) checks out Todd’s upcoming release. Look for more from Mark here on Ickmusic! You can also check out his politics-centric blog, Notes from the Front. - Pete

The first time I listened to Arena, the new 13 track album by Todd Rundgren, I felt like I was listening to the album that record companies were begging him to make… in 1981. Thankfully, he never did and went on to make some of the best music of his career, solo and with Utopia. That’s not to say that I dislike Arena. It’s just that Todd was going to have to really put forth a Herculean effort to beat his 2004 release, Liars, which I think is one of his best records (everyone who ever wondered what happened to their jet pack or flying car should download the track “Future” [mp3] from this release - very funny and cool). I always get excited when Todd releases an album of new material. I have been a fan of his since the beginning and the new ones don’t come that often anymore (one every 4-5 years) . So it was with this exuberance that I pressed play the moment I got the CD in the mail.

As I listened to the first four tracks I was seriously wondering if this was the new Scorpions-Foreigner-Loverboy comeback album. Or perhaps the “lost” Scorpions-Foreigner-Loverboy album. Track 2, “Afraid”, does have a very addicting guitar riff that evokes a certain melancholy, but by the time you get to track 4, “Gun”, one has to wonder what Todd is doing. Does he really think it is the year 1981? Then track 5, “Courage”, comes along and we enter familiar territory with that gorgeous wall of vocals/keyboard sound that Todd has mastered for all eternity. This song could have easily been on The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect.

Tracks 6 and 7, “Weakness” and “Strike”, move us back into power pop, with the latter sounding - and I am not kidding - like a cross between Joan Jett and AC/DC! Todd’s voice, always gorgeous - and this album is no exception - sounds just like Bon Scott. After listening to this track several times, I have to say that I have really grown to love it. Track 8 is where the album’s good stuff really begins. Everything after this point is wonderful - “Bardo” and “Pissin’” being two of the best songs Todd has ever recorded.

Arena, released on September 30, is not Todd’s best album, but die hard Todd Fans will love it, Scorpions-Foreigner-Loverboy-Joan Jett-AC/DC fans will love it, and it will make those A&R guys in the way back machine darned happy too.

Oh, and the cover (above) kicks major ass, dude!

Due to my recent move to a new place, I have neither cable tv nor Internet. Luckily I have a working phone <s>no thanks to Bellsouth/ATT</s>. Anyway, I heard that T.I. and Rihanna rocked it at the VMAs. So I couldn’t wait for Dimewars.com or Worldstarhiphop.com to put the videos up!

Now that I’ve seen the performances for myself, I am convinced! We already know T.I. is the King, but Rihanna is the undisputed Queen!

Beyonce, Ashanti, et al, better hold on to your wigs ’cause Rihanna is coming to collect ‘em!

I loved the blond highlights in Rihanna’s hair and, of course, her styling was impeccable! Rihanna looked so H-A-W-T in those boots with the 5-inch heels. I was a little worried that RiRi would lose her balance and do a Beyonce, face first down the steps. But my girl is too cool to slip and fall on national TV.

The final day of MFNW might have lacked some of Friday’s fireworks (did you see the Monotonix videos?) but it more than made up for it with a whole slew of great shows. Phew. Today’s contributor’s include (in no particular order) Brandon Seifert, Robert Ham, Nilina Mason-Campbell, Mark Stock, Michael Mannheimer, David Robinson, and Casey Jarman.

3:25 pm, Hawthorne Fred Meyer’s: Musicfest supplies, day four: Power Bar. Two Red Bulls. Bottle of Advil. It’s been a good fest. (BS)

4:40 pm, Backspace: Decompressing with my laptop, I take off my headphones and suddenly become aware that the girl soundchecking on stage is Mirah. I look around; none of the other patrons seem to have realized who she is. YES. “Let’s check the ukulele now,” she tells the sound tech. DOUBLE PLUS YES. Too bad I won’t be catching her show tonight. I’m not going to brave the inevitable capacity crowd, and it’s opposite the final Eskimo & Sons show. (BS)

5:35 pm, Wonder Ballroom: The line for Ratatat stretches to the corner of MLK. Crap. I’ve been so good about making it into shows so far. I dutifully wait in line; nothing I want to check out until 9 anyway, so why not? Eventually a Wonder employee announces that Ratatat is almost over, and we’re clearly not going to get to catch them. Someone mentions that it was a free show—if I’d known that, I wouldn’t have bothered. Then illustrator and comics artist Mike Dringenberg, co-creator of The Sandman, rides by on
his bike. I flag him down, and we chat about Prague over fries in the Wonder Café—which is basically deserted, despite the line outside. (BS)

5:40 pm, Wonder Ballroom: I’m standing behind E*Rock, who is nodding in the exact intervals with the beat and watching his brother Evan Mast onstage. (NMC)

5:44 pm, Wonder Ballroom: One of Evan’s drumstick breaks in two and he pounds away on a floor-tom. (NMC)

5:46 pm, Wonder Ballroom: Ya know, I’m kind of bored. Ratatat have always been a band that I enjoy as, well, background music: in the car when you’re sitting in traffic; in the background when you’re finishing other work or making dinner or cleaning the kitchen. But tonight it’s all booming beats and showy guitar solos and overplayed “psychedelic” visuals. I head outside to cool down and notice MFNW director Trevor Solomon pacing around, cigarette in hand and cell phone glued to his ear. It’s good to know that some things never change. (MM)

5:53 pm, Wonder Ballroom: I’m starting to realize—despite being very familiar with the tracks off Ratatat’s latest—that each song sounds like a Panther song beat-wise before the group brings in its signature guitar chords. (NMC)

7:19 pm, Wonder Ballroom: Les Savy Fav frontman Tim Harrington asks “What’s the difference between me and a pitbull?” at the end of a song. “I have human intelligence!” How’s that for a dig at GOP Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin? (NMC)

7:24 pm, Wonder Ballroom: Harrington brings out ladder from behind the black curtain. He sets it up onstage, passing it into the audience with one foot on a step and then proceeds to climb it as it gets passed along the audience. Crowd surfing on a ladder. Hmm. It’s always safety first when it comes to Les Savy Fav. He reaches the rafters of the Wonder and turns a stage light the other way. (NMC)

7:41 pm, Wonder Ballroom: Tim Harrington is taking swigs of water from a bottle and then spitting it into the mouths of adoring (and maybe deranged) fans. (NMC)

7:45 pm, Wonder Ballroom: Les Savy Fav frontman Tim Harrison has stripped down to red briefs and is gyrating his beer belly as seductively as one could possibly hope. In recent minutes he has sauntered into the crowd atop a ladder, combed his body hair comprehensively with a fork, and kissed the lips of possibly the biggest man in the audience. Most remarkably, amidst all this chaos the rest of the band isn’t missing a single beat. “Je t’aime”, they bellow repeatedly, and the feeling is definitely mutual. (DR)

8:08 pm, Wonder Ballroom: Tim Harrington keeps mispronouncing Ratatat with an extra “tat” as he thanks the Brooklynites and exits the stage for good. (NMC)

8:10 pm, Outside the Wonder Ballroom: It wouldn’t humanly be possible to document everything that was awesome about the set that Les Savy Fav, Greatest Live Band In The World (I just decided), just played. But needless to say, it kept coming. I just hope you were there…(DR)

8:20 pm, Backspace: I’ve just missed Strangers Die Every Day, who I’ve been meaning to check out (and who I always confuse with Brooklyn’s A Place To Bury Strangers). Inside I see a guy who looks familiar, and do a double take. He’s the old roommate of a girl I used to date…when I lived in Honolulu. Qua? Turns out he’s in town for Musicfest. Outside I find Kaebal from Sequential Art Gallery, Indigo from the Stumptown Comics Fest, Letters From Underwood’s Katy Ellis O’Brien, and other Portland comics folks. (Between them and Mike Dringenberg, it seems to be a night of hanging out with comics people.) I get into a conversation with some guy
about The Random Couch on the Sidewalk outside Backspace, which we decide is a good band name. We agree that its earlier work was better, and the solo stuff by the cushion just wasn’t as good; it needed the rest of the couch to fill out the bottom end. Four guys wearing nothing but Speedos walk out of Backspace, leading us to wonder just when they arrived and how we managed to miss the until now. (BS)

9:00 pm, Burnside: The Crystal Ballroom line is around the block. (NMC)

9:05 pm, Crystal Ballroom: HUUUGE line for Blitzen Trapper. Apparently I lose at actually making it to shows tonight. I give up quickly and strike out for the Doug Fir, intent on ensuring a spot at the Loch Lomond show (a wise move, it turns out). On the corner across from Powell’s is a guy in a nice suit singing into a karaoke machine. He’s GOOD. People slow as they pass him, full of big, bemused grins. Someone drops money in his basket, and he tips his fedora. (BS)

9:10 pm, the Fez: I’m taking advantage of the empty dancefloor to dance to Battles, whose record “Mirrored” is booming from the speakers while the Slants set-up behind schedule looking entirely affected. (NMC)

9:43 pm, the Fez: We leave the Fez. I’m in slight bewilderment over having caught the Slants. KPSU’s programming director Tony Prato asks what would’ve been better: waiting in the Crystal Ballroom line are catching the Slants? We all agree waiting in the line would have been. (NMC)

9:50 pm, Outside Crystal Ballroom: Someone resembling Willie Nelson walks by. (NMC)

9:57 pm, Outside Crystal Ballroom: I spy Crystal Ballroom employee Ryan who is pacing down the line and presumably taking in a headcount. I remind him that last year during the last night of the fest, he serenaded those entering the venue with “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.” He reprises the performance, I join in and someone in line questions if it’s Christmas yet. (NMC)

10:10 pm, Doug Fir: Ritchie Young from Loch Lomond wears a natty vest and a straw hat. He looks like he should be exclaiming “Step right up, step right up!”, singing in a barbershop quartet, or possibly a-courtin’ my great-grandmother in 1910. Instead he’s fronting Loch Lomond, which is a bit like doing all three at once. Loch Lomond’s music envelops me, wafting around the room. (BS)

10:20 pm, Crystal Ballroom: The guitarist in Fleet Foxes that looks like Macaulay Culkin also resembles a cowboy tonight with his brown stain vest. Even without a mic, he sings along. So do I. I don’t own any of the Seattle group’s music, but I have seen them five times this year. (NMC)

10:23 pm, Crystal Ballroom: A girl at the front of the stage in the all-ages section is trying to get her friend to do the wave with her during “White Winter Hymnal.” She is unsuccessful as her friend passes her a look of pity while refusing to take part. (NMC)

10:28 pm, Crystal Ballroom: A toddler trips over me by the bathrooms. It proceeds to cry, I proceed to hustle back to the Fez for Blind Pilot. (NMC)

10:33 pm, The Fez: The announcer says that with the help of the group having a song as a free download on iTunes, the label sold over $40,000 worth of Blind Pilot music. (NMC)

10:34 pm, Roseland: The ratio of guys to girls here must be 20:1. That’s probably because beards are practically obligatory for attendance at a Hot Water Music show, for males and females alike. Actually, a valid argument could be made that the band has been in continual decline ever since the members shaved off much of their own facial insulation a few years back. But let’s not dwell on that right now. (DR)

10:37 pm, outside of Scooters, now approaching Menomena’s block: I want to kill every other person with a wristband. I’m wondering if I can convince the Ballroom staff at the door that I’m pregnant and need to enter immediately to birth a child (you can’t have a baby outside, can you?), affording me at least a gander at Menomena or Helio Sequence. The child’s name is Scooter, for that’s where he was conceived. (MS)

10:58 pm, outside Towne Lounge: I just got done dancing my way through a wedding reception at the Bridgeport Brewpub and am a whisker away from being completely dead on my feet. Luckily, our stalwart music editor Casey greets me outside looking almost as exhausted as I’m sure I do, which for some reason makes me feel better about planning on staying up past 2 am for a third straight evening. He ushers me inside, as Eskimo & Sons is just about to start. (RH)

11:10 pm, Towne Lounge: This is my first time seeing EAS live and unfortunately might be the last time I get a chance to. I feel even worse about it watching them enjoying every split second of sharing the tiny Towne Lounge stage together. The band beams at each other throughout their set, warming my heart and giving me a slight jolt of energy. (RH)

11:20 pm, Towne Lounge: The crowd is not being quiet during Eskimo & Sons last show. And I am not the only one pissed about this, to judge from the yelling. I shout at Nelson Kempf and Keely Boyle from the Old Believers, who’ve joined Eskimo & Sons onstage for one more show. They both spot me and wave; I make a
mental note to find Nelson later and say “So how ’bout that Sarah Palin?” It’s a great way to make an Alaskan expatriate in Portland cringe. Eskimo & Sons finish a lovely set and are eventually convinced to do an encore by the crowd. They play a Paul McCartney song, and it’s nowhere near as good the rest of their material. They will be missed, the ineffable little darlings. (BS)

11:30 pm, outside Berbati’s: I leave and decide to try my luck in line for the big Polvo reunion show. The line to get in winds down the little side street across from Valentine’s. Two guys in front of me are trying to figure out if there is any possible way they can get in—weighing one option against another and coming up empty when the security guard walks back and, with a strangely moving hint of sadness in his voice, lets us know there’s no way we’re getting into that show. (RH)

11:40 pm, Towne Lounge: Tears in my eyes. Not because of the band’s hiatus—Eskimo and Sons have done it before, just not to this much fanfare—but because this is a moment. The culmination of so much and everyone surrounding me reaches a pinnacle and I’m proud. Powerful stuff. (NMC)

11:42, Towne Lounge: Jokes are being made about the possibility of people crying. Yo, I made it reality two minutes ago. Dhani jokes that if and when Eskimo & Sons do come back, the band will only play encores. No regular shows, just the encore. The band begin playing Wings “Let ‘Em In” to close out the night. (NMC)

11:50 pm, Ash Street Saloon: Plan B is implemented and all of my sad feelings about missing the Polvo show are washed away by the heavy rock that Nebula is pumping out. I had forgotten just how good this band is. (RH)

12:10 am, Sunday, Sept. 7. Ash Street Saloon: What’s a better way to describe Nebula than simply “heavy rock”? “Sex in the back of a muscle car rock”? “Whacked out of your brains on mushrooms rock?” “Syrupy sex rock?” (RH)

12:10 am, Sunday, Sept. 7. Roseland: This must be up there with the sweatiest I’ve ever been at a show. Read that to mean that Hot Water Music is playing plenty of the pre-Epitaph Records output that I was hoping for, and the place, as they say, is going off. “Where were all you guys every other time we played Portland?!”, asks an obviously stoked-yet-bemused Chris Wollard. (DR)

12:20 am, Sunday, Sept. 7. Towne Lounge: The Chicharones get off to a substantially late start, the first and only band I’ve seen do that at Musicfest this year. They tell us they’re starting the show with the Canadian national anthem—but wait! That’s not the Canadian national anthem! That’s “Eye of the Tiger!”—which might as well be the Canadian anthem at that. And it’s doubly amazing as performed by the Chicharones, far and away my favorite hip- hop act in the Northwest at this point. (BS)

12:25 am, Sunday, Sept. 7. Satyricon: I don’t get the hype surrounding Toronto hardcore troupe Fucked Up so, with prejudices running rampant, I give them all of two minutes in which to fail to impress me before sloping back off to the bar. There I hear my buddy tell each member of openers Sex Vid individually that “You guys should do a split with my band,” each time sounding increasingly like more of a threat than invitation. (DR)

12:36 am, Sunday, Sept. 7. Hawthorne Theater: Happiness is a Dan Deacon crowd. His shows are like grade school recess—plus a ton of noise. We made tunnels, waved glow sticks, played a crude version of duck-duck-goose, and made a frightening amount of sweat. Dan Deacon is of the people, for the people, and by the people. Bless his boisterous alien house music. (MS)

12:50 am, Sunday, Sept. 6. Ash Street Saloon: It suddenly dawns on me as Flipper are setting up that the majority of the people I’ve seen working the soundboards this weekend were women. How freakin’ cool is that? (RH)

12:55 am, Sunday, Sept. 6. Ash Street Saloon: Flipper front man Bruce Loose is stalking the stage as the rest of the band sets up, trying to be heard over the loud garage rock being played over the sound system. As best as I can make out, he’s happy that he can smoke on stage, he wants to know how many people have actually heard of this band before, and he doesn’t want people spilling his pitchers of Guinness and water that are sitting in front of the kick drum. (RH)

1:00 am, Sunday, Sept. 6. Ash Street Saloon: Having missed them the last time they came through town, I can’t tell you how absolutely off the wall excited I am to be watching Flipper playing “Way of the World.” It sounds as vibrant and brutal as it did when I first heard it. (RH)

1:25 am Saturday, Sept. 6. Ash Street Saloon: Halfway through the set, just as bassist Krist Novoselic’s playing gets unbearably loud, I almost collapse in a heap on the floor due to exhaustion. No amount of soda is going to keep me going. I make my way back to my car, blissed out from a weekend of amazing music and sad because I know my one-year-old son plans on waking me up at 6:30 in the morning. (RH)

1:47 am, Sunday, Sept. 7. Ash St. Saloon: After conspicuously urging Flipper’s snarling, wasted singer Bruce Loose several times to “get to the chorus,” stately ex-Nirvana gent Krist Novoselic finally snaps and stops the band mid-song. “So we’re a jam band now. Awesome.” Actually I can’t recall a single song they’ve played so far that’s had more than a single part to it but, though not being overly familiar with the ’80s hardcore stalwarts, I’ve no idea how much of that is deliberate and how much a product of inebriation. Either way, as Loose chugs the rest of his pitcher and attempts to drag a heckler onto the stage, it’s all pretty exhilarating stuff. “Flipper still rules, OK?!” (DR)

2:05 am, Sunday, Sept. 7. Ash St. Saloon: The final song finishes and Novoselic beckons the soundguy to cut the sound on the mic that Loose is slurring unintelligibly into, before heading out the venue in a hurry. All-in-all, an appropriately debauched conclusion to MFNW, and my cue to retreat home and sleep away the remainder of the weekend. (DR)

What would a MFNW post be without photos from WW’s Byron Beck? Here’s a few shots from the official MFNW after part at the Globe Hotel. Watch out for Spoon’s Britt Daniel:

I remember the first time i looked at the liner notes(before i had even listened to the music) and i
wondered what i had got myself into. The pictures of the five Norwegian band members all in funny
costumes with names like Bumble B , Lumpy Dave , Ernie Chung , Han Solo and Cool Kat made me roll my eyes.At the top of
the guest musicians list is Mickey Moog who they refer to in the liner notes as being nearly a regular
TSOI member(he has since become a full time member).Anyway i figured that THE SMELL OF
INSENCE must be like a GONG offshoot or something. Then i put the cd on and was left speechless for
the next 50 minutes. This is one of the most mellotron drenched recordings i have ever heard! The band
themselves call their music progressive folk-psyche.Besides the traditional instruments we get
sitar,violin,viola,tamboura,ess-cornet,harmonium,harpsichord,sax,tablas and bird flutes.Micky Moog
comes by his name honestly as he plays mellotron, hammond organ, fender rhodes & wurlitzer el,pianos
and synths. There's more i just thought i should quit talking about all the instruments used on this
album. On this record they have put music to the writings of four different authors. The female and male
vocals are in english.
"A Floral Treasury" is the 25 minute opening track that takes us on quite the journey. It opens with
solemn harmonium sounds before a heavy beat comes in with mellotron. From there we are taken into
krautrock territory with an eastern flavour(sitar). This is trippy and hypnotic.Female vocals after 3 1/2
minutes.Spacey 8 minutes in as the beat continues.Powerful waves of mellotron come in after 10
minutes as the beat and melody stops.Wave after wave ...of haunting mellotron.Drums come in after
12 minutes as mellotron continues.Vocals are back before 14 1/2 minutes.A spacey calm 17 minutes
in.A brighter sound 19 1/2 minutes in with mellotron.Vocals 20 minutes in,male vocals join in.It gets a
little experimental late. "Columbine Confused" is such a great tune.Very upbeat with female vocals
leading the way. This is 60's sounding with lots of mellotron. Some nice guitar before 3 minutes and 4
1/2 minutes. "A Word In Season" opens with birds chirping and harpsichord as female vocals come
in.This section is contrasted with the moving and majestic mellotron and her more restrained
vocals.Nice. Back to the uptempo and almost silly soundscape. That mellotron drenched section i liked
from earlier in the song is back before 4 1/2 minutes. There is something naive and charming about this tune. "From The Third Hemisphere" opens with floods
of mellotron as male vocals come in.I'm reminded a lot of the great ANEKDOTEN here. The mellotron is
so moving. The tempo picks up 3 minutes in,what a fantastic sound! Female vocals follow and then male
as they sing together. It calms down before 6 minutes as sax comes in crying. The tempo picks back up
again 10 1/2 minutes in as this instrumental section continues right to the end.
For me this is a masterpiece of psychedelic
music.A must for mellotron fans too.

After what seemed like several years of hype but no real buzz, the day is finally here. Welcome to the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards live blog. Tonight’s show poses many questions: Will America fully embrace Russell Brand? What brand of hot pants will the Pussycat Dolls be wearing? What terrible reality show will get the most plugs? And what the hell will Britney be doing? Scroll down and stay tuned in for what promises to be a less painful ride than it was 365 days ago (we hope).

8:53: We haven’t been watching the pre-show (because we don’t want to have a collective stroke), but who is the guy who looks like Casey Affleck and taking shots at T-Pain?

8:56: No matter what Britney does four minutes from now, she’ll be hard pressed to outdo the elephant in that ad for the VMAs.

9:01: Guh. It looks like Britney’s ability to bring the show to a grinding halt hasn’t waned. When was the last time you saw Jonah Hill bomb at anything?

9:03: Man, Britney is a terrible actress. If we wanted to see someone’s bad acting, we’d be watching Turtle butcher the script on the season premiere of Entourage right now. That being said, she hasn’t looked that great in a long time.

9:05: Are the VMAs in a high school gymnasium this year? This looks like our prom — zombies and all.

9:07: Rihanna comes out to confuse people rather tepidly (despite the awesome White Stripes reference in the breakdown). You know, for all the junk Britney took last year, that performance wasn’t much better (despite the zombies).

9:10: Slash looks like he needs a drink. We know how he feels. Also, he’s starting to look like some biker’s grandma — not a good look for a badass.

9:12: Russell Brand comes off like a weird synthesis of Austin Powers and Steven Tyler. That’s a combination that looks way better on paper. Also, we wish he would never mention the Jonas Brothers’ genitals again.

9:14: Did he just try to tell a joke involving Madonna getting penetrated by a baseball bat? This is probably the most awesome bomb performance we’ve ever seen.

9:17: is Joe Jonas looking like John Stamos on purpose?

9:19: Britney wins Best Female for the first time. Not for nothing, but “Touch My Body” got robbed.

9:21: In a battle of wits between Pete Wentz and Speidi, does a black hole open up? Props to the tux, though.

9:23: DJ AM and Travis Barker, available soon for Bar Mitzvahs and Sweet Sixteens.

9:27: Is that really Demi Moore? Maybe someone at MTV misread the memo. They really wanted Demi Lovato — she certainly wouldn’t have forgotten her mike.

9:29: Chris Brown wins Best Male. Weezy got robbed, and Brown concurs.

9:30: Russell Brand looks like he can see people changing the channel.

9:31: So because the Jonas Brothers appeal to young people, they have to perform on the set of Sesame Street?

9:33: STAMPEDE! Also, is “Love Bug” a euphemism for VD? Because that’s seriously inappropriate.

9:34: WAIT! Are we really doing this “We’re only going to show you 40 seconds of a performance” thing again? Not that we want to see Katy Perry ruin a Madonna song, but that was a pretty awesome banana dress.

9:40: Michael Phelps has gotten the biggest reaction of the night. The dude won eight gold medals — why does he look so nervous?

9:42: It’s really cruel to make Weezy walk down those stairs while he spits. Also, why is Leona Lewis mangling the Animals? We think we liked her slightly better when she called herself Alicia Keys.

9:44: Story: T-Pain was in the Rolling Stone office a few weeks ago to play his new record, and he was wearing one of those hats around. So it’s not just a costume — it’s a lifestyle.

9:45: Weezy’s pretty much killing it, and Kobe Bryant LOVES IT.

9:47: For a second there, we thought that the group that brought us “Camel Toe” had won the award for best dance crew. Now we’re disappointed.

9:49: Are we sure these are actually the Pussycat Dolls? These women are fully clothed. Does it seem like the Pussycat Dolls exist just to win these awards? Also, they love the troops. That should help post-traumatic stress disorder!

9:53: Just a reminder: While you’re reading this or watching the show, you could be watching the great Kyle Orton leading the Chicago Bears to victory.

9:56: Are they really making Danity Kane count text votes? Because if that’s true, that’s awesome. Also: They’re sitting down, and they’re still towering over Pete Wentz.

9:58: And now welcome the stars of a movie you won’t get to see for three months! This show needs more real vampires.

9:59: With Katy Perry’s dress and Haley Williams’ pants, is yellow the new black?

10:00: We have to assume the people who wandered over to the Whiskey tonight to see a Warrant cover band are seriously confused.

10:03: Oh, so Paramore were in the studio all along? That was poorly executed and not terribly interesting — an apt metaphor for most of this show’s first hour.

10:05: Brand is sort of a mess and none of the performances have been stellar (save for Lil Wayne), but this is much, much better than last year’s show so far.

10:09: Does this mean that Shia Labeouf is the next singer for Velvet Revolver?

10:10: Linkin Park win for Best Rock Video for a song that sounds EXACTLY like “With Or Without You.” Joe Hahn thought Transformers was awesome. He’s wrong.

10:13: Pink does all her own stunts! That toss through the sugar glass was pretty sweet, and this song is definitely great. However, we’re pretty certain MTV will have to blur out her nipples in subsequent broadcasts. Actually, are they blurring them in real time?

10:22: McLovin should totally join Slipknot full time. Also, nothing says Best Hip-Hop Video like metalheads from Iowa.

10:25: Lil Wayne takes the prize for “Lollipop.” As one of the commenters mentioned: He can’t afford a belt? Also, we’re big Weezy fans, but we’re still not entirely sure what a “Static Major” is.

10:27: T.I. deserves better than to have to rap his way through a high school production of Guys and Dolls.

10:30: Rihanna’s back! And she didn’t even get a costume change! She had well over an hour — Madonna does those things in about 40 seconds. That being said, T.I. is nailing this, and Professor Lupe Fiasco concurs with his findings!

10:32: We haven’t mentioned it yet, but the idea of the house band being a guy drumming along to some guy’s iTunes playlist is remarkably odd. We hope Travis Barker cashed a huge check. Sidebar: Haven’t these “Real World/Road Rules Challenges” gotten seriously dull since the Miz left to join WWE? (A nod to anyone who needs the info: The Miz did not win the ECW championship tonight).

10:37: Corbin Bleu looks like the love child of Lionel Richie and Adam Duritz. Bummer for that kid.

10:39: Wait, has Christina Aguilera has assumed Rihanna’s “Umbrella” identity? This lip sync job gives Britney’s “Gimme More” performance a run for its money as the worst in VMAs history. Also, did she just put on a cape?

10:41: She did! She put on a cape! Finally something to cover her ridiculous camel toe.

10:43: Wait, is flopping Russell Brand’s whole schtick? Because if it is, that makes him the British Norm Macdonald.

10:44: Tokio Hotel win Best New Artist. In a contest based on text messaging, was there ever any doubt?

10:49: LL Cool J. Legend. Innovator. About to come out with his best album in a decade. Not allowed to play on the main show. Is there no justice in the universe?

10:53: Paris Hilton overcomes her illiteracy to give the Best Pop Video to Britney Spears. She’s tonight’s Martin Scorsese: She’s done better work, but it’s been a weak year, you know?

10:55: Lupe Fiasco. Incredible MC. Innovator. Entertainer. Best live act in hip-hop. Dressed like the maitre’d on a cruise ship. Not allowed to play the main show. LL knows your pain, Lupe.

10:59: Drake and Josh introduce Kid Rock. Kid Rock is also having a Martin Scorsese sort of year (i.e., “All Summer Long” is by far the worst single of the man’s career, but it’s inexplicably his biggest).

11:03: Like Batman, Weezy swoops in to save this song. He doesn’t really succeed. Also, if Ian Curtis was still alive, this would certainly give him fits.

11:10: Kobe gets to give away Video of the Year? He only got one gold medal; Phelps has eight! Has anybody had a career rebound better than Kobe Bryant? That dude is now officially bulletproof. R. Kelly should retain him as legal council in the future.

11:12: In what would be considered a minor upset if people got upset over these things, Britney Spears wins Video of the Year, completing our Scorsese metaphor. Who is that guy Britney is sitting next to? UPDATE: We didn’t recognize Britney manager Larry Rudolph. He looks like Lorenzo Lamas missed a Botox appointment.

11:13: New Kanye song! It’s AutoTune-tastic! Is that the Blue Man Group?

11:15: Kanye appears to be paying back Daft Punk — expect them to sample this about 20 minutes after this goes off the air. Aren’t those drummers the same people that killed Luke Skywalker’s uncle?

11:17: Russell Brand sends us off, saying the winner was ultimately, uh, “love.” We’re pretty sure who the losers were. We’re tired, sweaty and pretty confused, so thus ends the 2008 VMA live blog. This was definitely a step up from last year, but it’s certainly a baby step. Stay tuned for further wrap-ups from the after-parties, plus behind the scenes photos and videos from the night’s festivities.

Indeed you know it's an off-year for the MTV Awards when the most shocking moment is Demi Moore's appearance. The fellas in Tokio Hotel looked terribly bored after winning Best New Artist (that made five of us, zing). But while this year's kinder, gentler, Disneyer VMAs (promise rings for everyone) offered few watercooler moments, we did establish rules for next year's drinking game: throw one back every time there's an awkward product placement (I'm king of zings). Give it up for a brokenhearted Kanye who took the night off from his coolhunting blog to close the show with a drumline-backed "Love Lockdown." It was the song's world premiere in an era when it's damn near impossible to pull off a world premiere on live TV. Watch, and see the winners list, this way SQUID BRAINS...
