And even more so for celebs who would otherwise be mauled by paparazzi after a simple dinner out with a girlfriend in West Hollywood. In this clip from E! Online, Jessica Simpson’s usually cheerful demeanor is replaced with exasperation, and rightfully so. She looks downright fed up with the sea of zoom lenses that are making it physically impossible to just walk to her car. When she finally does, she looks back at the photographers and says, “Take me back to Nashville.” Amen, Jessica.

Keri Hilson's upcoming album, "In A Perfect World" has been pushed back to December 9. This is the upteenth time the album has been pushed back. "Evolver" also features appearances from Kanye West, Estelle and Brandy."This album doesn't sound like me," Legend tells Billboard. "The tempo is faster than I've done before.

There are more albums than you could possibly listen to this year in this week alone, so here's the breakdown on what to check out and put some effort into listening. Obviously with the size of this list we might have missed a group, too, so if we did, please leave a comment.

First off, don't miss what Travis has in store. Ode to J. Smith should not only find your player this week, but we want your feedback since we expect big things. Also from the U.K. is Oasis. I've never been on top of all of their stuff, and the badmouthing I hear via comparisons and the integrity of the band really hasn't helped them catch a clean groove with me. Anything Oasis mandates a gander though.

Next, our indie rockers balancing on the edge of pop and experiental, Pretty & Nice, caught our ears with Pink and Blue's "Fortress" a bit ago and now with their album Get Young the time is ripe for their updated sound to tackle some fascinated future fans. Back once again and hardly skipping a beat is none other than Jay Reatard. Their fun-filled corralling of instruments holds a piece unique and worth checking out.

From Maximo Park's guitarist Duncan Lloyd, is his solo effort Seeing Double, which will no doubt carry a tremendous melody tiered with some almost simply done string strokes (they're not ). Joining Lloyd on the solo release stage, although on a much more mellow momentum are Damon Aaron and Jolie Holland to name a few. If a quicker electronic is your forte, catch Armin van Buuren's (ASOT2008) or Morgan Geist's (Double Night Time) newest.

Other artists of extreme interest include: the well-traveled Deerhoof, a MUF pick of the week Annuals, Eulogies and their newest EP and The Rosebuds. Those We Leave Behind

Interview by Zarina Raja

Those We Leave Behind is out today. In your opinion, which track should fans listen to first?

This is an album where I can honestly say I’m proud of each and every song; it’s really hard to choose just one song and say, "Listen to this first..." but, if you had a gun to my head I would choose the second song, "Don't Wake Up", which is a song that really hits home with me. There was some very dark times in this band a year ago and this song kinda just tells the story of how I felt back then. I'm proud to say we bounced back and are better than ever.

Tell me about the background to Those We Leave Behind. What was the main point of inspiration behind this album?

We were a band on the rise, selling out all our shows at the start, and were signed after only our fourth show ever. I guess you can say it was a little too fast of a rise for us. A lot of the members at the time got this huge head thinking this was how it was going to be forever... we had never toured and paid our dues or gone through any hard times. To finally tour and play 3,000 miles away to about twenty/thirty kids each night was kinda like a "Oh shit... this is harder than I thought..." I had been in bands before and already experienced shows like this so I was ready. They weren't. Members left because it got hard. This album which is titled, "Those We Leave Behind" is all the bullshit and ego trips and drama that had plagued us for the past two years.

      Complete the following sentence:

The best time to listen to Those We Leave Behind is…

...in your car. Turn that s*** up and just let yourself go.

What did you want this second album to represent?

That we were not done. When we signed with Epitaph they just re-released our demo we did ourselves which is the "We Are Always Searching" EP, then we recorded our first real album when we were barely a year old called, "Lovers' Requiem". After this album came out and the drama started, I just wanted to f****** tour, and just grow musically. Everyone wanted the money and fame right away, like right f****** now. I knew we were not the greatest live band yet... but we were damn good that was for sure. I just wanted to get better, get to know the members better and have a good time. This second album is just a testament to where we are now and we’re just a happier group of guys.

What is it that you want your fans to take away from your music?

That we are honest. There is no bullshit with us. What you see and hear is what you get. We do this because we love it.

Which song seems to be going down best live?

We have been testing the waters and playing just a few songs live, but it seems that ‘Bone Garden’ off the new album is getting kids crazy in the pit. They were already singing along to it live which is a good and bad thing I guess. I don't know how they already knew the song since it's not even out yet..

Your music is pretty dark, although highly accessible. Does a live show completely drain you emotionally?

I can honestly say I walk off stage a good three pounds lighter, sweat dripping from every inch of my body. All of us do. The band gives everything they have on stage, I mean everything. I honestly believe we throw one of the best lives shows out there.

What do you like to do after a ferocious gig? Do you hit the bar and carry on into the night or do you relax in the tour van?

There are a few of us that tend to go drinking afterwards, but for me, I just want to get out of my stage clothes, and relax. When we were touring in our own tour bus it was awesome, I would just get in some running shorts and go to sleep in my own bunk. I just give so much off live that after the show I feel like I've run five miles. I also know now I have to take care of myself a little more being the singer, so I don’t drink anymore really, don't smoke anymore...I drink some water and call it a night.

You’ve toured with some big names including Biffy Clyro, The Audition and The Bronx. What would your ultimate tour line-up be?

We would love to do some epic huge Metal/Punk/Rock show with bands like AFI and Avenged Sevenfold.... how awesome of a show would that be?

What is your favourite city to play in the UK?

So far, I think London was by far one of the best shows we did in the UK. The people out there are so smart about music, and they don't have a stick up their asses like some states here in the United States. Our style and look sometimes scares people off here in the United States... if we play some state in the midwest we get stared at like we are monsters or something. In the UK they embrace it.

When you look back over your career, what will be your ultimate tour memory?

The Epitaph tour when we shared a bus with Escape The Fate. They were just newly signed, we were just newly signed. We were two bands out to prove a point and it was by far the best tour we ever did. The kids didn't know who the fuck I Am Ghost were most of the time, but I think that made us stronger and more hungry as a band.... some of the past members lost that fire and hunger, and I am glad they are gone. It was bringing me down.

Is there anything else in life that you wish to pursue alongside your music career?

I'd like to get back into animation one day, possibly do my own comic book or write a screen play for a movie. I love the music industry but I LOVE the movie industry even more.... I worked in the movie industry for ten years of my life... you can't just forget something like that.

Is there any contemporary music at the moment that has grabbed you and inspired your own creative stream?

I tried to not listen to any music that was even similiar to I Am Ghost during the writing of the new album. I didn’t want to fall into the trap and sound like MCR, or sound like AFI, or some other band that kinda looks like us. I really wanted to just write a fucking good album... that's all.

What is the most memorable gig that you have been to as a fan member?

It was Warped Tour 2004. I Am Ghost wasn't even formed yet, and I remember going there, waiting in line and being so damn excited to get in. I had my list of bands I needed to see that day. I can just remember the electricity in the air. When I got in, I was like a fan boy rushing to the stage and seeing all these bands that I looked up to like gods. I just remembered how it was being a kid and now that we are doing Warped Tour and other shows I will always remember how it felt to be in the audience lookin up at the stage... I can never forget that's what made me.

Rocks Off: Did the band think you had a hit record when you wrapped the album?

Billy Gibbons: Yeah. We were fairly confident we had stumbled into something that was really solid. In the middle of the disco craze, this was our solid rock music message, and it couldn’t have been stronger at the time. I don’t know, the Stones had gotten away with “Miss You” and Rod Stewart [sings], “Do ya think I’m sexy,” whatever that thing was.

RO: But this actually proved pretty dance-floor-friendly as well, with the “Legs” remixes and such, right?

BG: Yes. And it was only made possible because we had remained focused toward good timing, and the tempo that was present on the first eight bars was still there on the 128th bar and they could do their dance magic with it as they would. The bass drum figure was four on the floor for a lot of that stuff. It was really simple.

We weren’t the first rock band to do it. AC/DC, they had broken ground to keep things on the ultra-simple. So we were taking the messaging matters from a lot of diverse places, but to answer your question, yeah. There was a sense of confidence, and we genuinely liked it.

Many times we don’t go back to listen to a lot of ZZ Top songs, because we’re on to listening to what everybody else has done. This was different. We actually enjoyed listening to it, and the subsequent live performances to this day.

ZZ Top live in Fresno, 2005

RO: You still play about half the record live, right?

BG: I guess the number that would be closest to the blues from Eliminator is “I Need You Tonight.”

RO: I love that song. That’s deep blues.

BG: Yeah, and it’s coming off on the live stage. Just last night we had an extended version of it, and it’s funny. It’s a good feeling.

RO: Let me ask you a little bit of alternative history. How do you think the record would have done without the videos?

BG: I think it might have resonated just on a musical level. It would be difficult to take a second guess. That video phenomenon turned the music world into a dual-edged sword. Before it was left up to one’s imagination what the mind could see. And then video kind of changed that. It was painting a picture for us.

RO: What do you remember thinking the first time or two you saw MTV?

BG: Well, I’ll tell you exactly. Frank called me, and then he called Dusty, and we thought we were tuning into a late-night concert channel. After about four or five hours, I called Frank back and said “When is this concert over?” Not knowing we were watching the first 24-hour music channel. But it was really something, man. It was exciting, and it was, you know, sonic meets cinema. It was really cool.

RO: Who came up with the idea to use the car?

BG: Our director, Tim Newman, really put the disparate elements together into a form-fitting puzzle. He found the girls. We said, “Tim, we passed up millions of dollars with a razor-blade company because we’re too ugly under these beards. Find another place to aim the camera.” He said, “OK – we’ll take the red car and I’ve got some pretty girls.”

RO: Doesn’t sound like you had to think about it too hard.

BG: Yeah. It made for a good combination, and it’s something that has tagged us. I think the present perception lingers on. ZZ Top is about good times, fast cars, pretty girls, hot rods…

RO: How many copies of those keychains you reckon have been manufactured?

BG: Gee whiz. Let’s put in terms of this present government “rescue budget.” [both laugh]

RO: With the reissue, how do you think the album holds up today?

BG: Well, hindsight’s 20/20, but musically, because of the stridency of maintaining a good groove, it still plays good. The compositions are entertaining. By and large, in a world where CDs have nearly evaporated, the sales figures reported for the first week indicate that somebody out there must like something about it, because it’s selling hard product. - Chris Gray

San Francisco's Girls are a duo composed of JR White and Christopher Owens (of Holy Shit fame). Their only album out so far, charmingly named "Lust for Life," arrived last March on True Panther Sounds. In a time when overcomplicated, artsy and painfully unique music receives all the critical acclaim it's nice to have a band like Girls. They may not play anything revolutionary, but they're one of the most enjoyable and classically appealing bands around.

Their instrumentals are simple, yet well-played and their vocals are absolutely beautiful. They make songs about love: falling in love, losing love, loving life. Their songs are romantic and reminiscent of the 60s. Plus, there are hand claps! And tambourines! In my mind they're a modern version of the Beach Boys living in San Francisco and serenading me in my bedroom with sweet and sad pop songs every night. Girls conjure up images of hand-holding and slow dancing and sitting in the car after a really terrible fight feeling angsty. With girls, every day feels like summertime.

If you like the guys in Girls, be sure to vote for them in the Indie Pop/Rock category of this year's SF Weekly Music Awards.--Melissa Baron

Lenny was backstage in a greenroom in Vienna, and a little old lady approached him. She introduced herself as the widow of Alban Berg, and Bernstein told her how honored he was to meet her. Now Berg, as you will recall, died without completing his opera Lulu, and there was some question about who would finish it. Helene Berg, Alban’s widow, initially offered the job to Schoenberg, who accepted but then decided it was too time-consuming, and the opera wasn’t completed until after her death in 1976.

Back in the greenroom, Helene told Lenny “I sink zat maybe you should finish Lulu. I vill go home and ask Alban.” Helene would apparently hold seances to speak with her dead husband. A few nights later, backstage, this Helene Berg approached Leonard Bernstein again, and Bernstein again professed his admiration for her husband and his honor at meeting her. Helene Berg said to Lenny “I asked Alban about Lulu. Alban sagte nein.” That line, “Alban sagte nein,” apparently became a running joke in the Bernstein household.

That’s the story as I remember it from the other night on WNYC. The recording isn’t available on the website, but maybe somebody out there heard it too. Opera Today tells the story slightly differently, saying that Bernstein himself sought permisson, but confirming that he was declined after Frau Berg consulted with Alban in a seance. An article in the New York Times last year also describes Bernstein as approaching Helene Berg, but sets the scene at two breakfasts at the Berg home.

How ever it went down (and I’m inclined to believe that Bernstein approached Helene Berg) it’s a great story. And I intend to make that my new excuse for turning people down. You want me to come to your solo contrabasoon recital? No can do–Alban sagte nein. Want me to do an arrangement of “My Heart Will Go On” for flute and acoustic guitar? Ooh, I’d love to, but Alban sagte nein.
