Alex "Gene" Ross has kindly provided us with a nice overview of Messiaen centenary observances far and wide. Marcus Maroney has chipped in with details of an impressive Messiaen series that begins not quite two weeks from now in Houston; no surprise that the versatile and stylish Brian Connelly is in the thick of things, and how good to see Susanne Mentzer involved, as well.

I'd like to nominate one more Messiaen event for consideration. John Scott, organist and director of music at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, is presenting Messiaen's complete organ works in a six-concert series that started yesterday (Oct. 4). The concerts, presented on Saturday afternoons at 4pm, are presented free of charge, though donations are accepted to defray the costs of printing David Gammie's outstanding program notes (which you can view as a PDF here).

This kind of effort is nothing new for Scott: last year he played the complete organ music of Buxtehude in a 10-concert series, and dispatched the complete organ works by Gyorgy Ligeti and Jonathan Harvey in another 2007 concert, which I reviewed for the Times.

Having just filed my Times review of yesterday's recital (which included Prélude and La Nativité du Seigneur), I won't hesitate to give the remaining programs my highest possible recommendation. The St. Thomas website has all the details, but what the heck, I'll list them here, as well.

Check out Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Queen Latifah on the latest issue of Ebony magazine. The ladies star in the new movie, "The Secret Life's Of Bees". The movie is being hailed as the new "Waiting To Exhale". I don't agree with that comparison but I have to see the movie to fully understand that tagline. Oh by the way the ladies look ravishing. Ebony always has very nice and classy covers. Whereas other magazines like VIBE have such a desire to shock that their covers often fall flat in recent years especially.

Joe Budden returns with his latest offering, "Halfway House". The album is a precursor to new album, "Padded Room" in stores 2009.

I'm feeling a little emotional today after some nice Rosh Hashanah moments. It's fitting today that I finally return to one of, if not the, most important LP of my life, Run-DMC's Raising Hell. It was the first tape I bought, my first foray out of the world of 45s and into the new technological edge. I was about 8 years old and really had no idea what I was getting into; a friend's older brother was listening to it all the time and talking about it and since I thought he was cool, I felt like it was the right call. Oh, was it ever! It put me on the path to a lifelong love of music and rap and everything. Thanks Brian Park, wherever you are!

Those opening lines of "Peter Piper" where Run and DMC trade rhymes brings tears to my eyes, takes me back to when I was 8 years old and forced my parents to take me to Sam Goody's to buy this tape. I have been listening to a lot recently and it has lot none of its power or excellence. What strikes me most is how much that early rap was creating its own world through words. Run and DMC spit so many words here and not in that awful Twista way, but in a literate way that just sounds like two guys who have so much to say. I miss that spirit today, that joy at rapping and being heard. Songs like "My Adidas" and "It's Tricky" are amazing, songs that are a part of my DNA now. There's such a swagger to each song, that King of Rock style, the adidas tracksuits, the gold chains, the poses. However, take note current rappers, these guys were as hard as fuck yet didn't need to beat the shit out of women nor kill people to get that attitude across.

The music is just as good, as this album saw Run-DMC adding so much to the rap sound and not just with "Walk This Way" with Aerosmith. Check "Is It Live" for a great congo-y beat. Or listen for all of the scratches and riffs, the introduction of rock samples like "My Sharona" on "It's Tricky," the various layers that took rap out of its minimal stage. It's not surprising that this album would take rap to the next level of popularity, as it is a huge sonic leap. Rick Rubin and Jam Master Jay were the architects on this one, changing the world and my life in 1986.

FRITH, FRED - The Top of His Head (1989)

When talking about guitar heroes, one could easily quote Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Blackmore, Vai, Satriani, Zappa (that's a lot of Italian-American musicians now), Fripp... You can go on and on, name-dropping until the first rays of the sun. Yet Frith is closer to a free jazz tradition (Derek Bailey is the first name to come if looking for a possible influence) and the soundtrack reviewed here come in this tradition: past the title theme, don't expect solid rock riffs and obvious melodies. The album appears as a collection of atmospheres, Frith using more often tapes and sound effects than his guitar: a few piano notes here (Lucy leaves a note), drones in the backyard, samples of telephone conversations, a lot of unidentified sounds... On Channel Change, a melody explodes, a variation on the title theme; Underwater Dream gives a sad temper... Until Jane Siberry sings This Old Earth, the only true song of this record. Right after, you can dance to Donuts. Then, back to the ambient. Because this album obeys to the definition of ambient music given by Brian Eno: a discreet music.

Don't get me wrong: The Top of His Head is not a bad album. It needs to be known, it has its moments, its moods, it's not easy to be loveable and is not recommended (of course: it was published on Crammed records) to the beginners.

But first three more digitized vinyls for your appraisal..

Jones was born( May 19, 1948) Grace Mendoza in Spanish Town, Jamaica, the daughter of Marjorie and Robert W. Jones, who was a politician and Apostolic clergyman. Her parents took Grace and her brother Christian, to relocate to Syracuse, New York in 1965. Before becoming a successful model in New York City and Paris, Jones studied theatre at Syracuse University. Jones' statuesque and flamboyant look proved to be a hit in the New York City nightclub scene, which led to a recording contract with Island Records in 1977.

It resulted in a string of dance club hits and a large gay following. The three disco albums she recorded , Portfolio (1977), Fame (1978), and Muse (1979) , generated considerable success in that market. These albums consisted of pop melodies, such as "All on a Summer's Night" and "Do or Die", set to a disco beat, as well as standards such as "What I Did for Love", "Autumn Leaves", and "Send in the Clowns". During this period, she also became a muse to Andy Warhol, who photographed her extensively. Jones also accompanied him to famed New York City nightclub Studio 54 on many occasions.

With the dawn of the '80s came a massive anti-disco movement across the U.S., Jones adapted the emerging New Wave music to create a different style for herself. Still with Island, and now working with producers Alex Sadkin and Chris Blackwell, she released the acclaimed albums Warm Leatherette (1980) and Nightclubbing (1981). These included re-imaginings of songs by Sting, Iggy Pop, The Pretenders, Roxy Music, Flash and the Pan, The Normal, Ástor Piazzolla and Tom Petty.Both produced by the noted reggae team of Sly & Robbie

Parallel to her musical shift was an equally dramatic visual makeover, replacing her S&M look of the '70s with a detached, androgynous image created in partnership with stylist Jean-Paul Goude, with whom she had a son. Jones adopted a severe, androgynous look, with square-cut hair and angular, padded clothes. The iconic cover photographs of Nightclubbing and, subsequently, Slave to the Rhythm (1985) exemplified this new identity Jones' sixth solo release overall, Living My Life, followed in 1982, while the singer took a break from recording to focus on film work and landed roles in such movies as Conan the Destroyer and the James Bond flick A View to a Kill (Jones' romantic life also provided tabloid fodder at the time when she was linked with Rocky IV star Dolph Lundgren).

Jones returned back to her recording career, enlisting super-producer Trevor Horn to oversee 1985's Slave to the Rhythm, which turned out to be a somewhat autobiographical work (the same year, a ten-track compilation was issued as well, Island Life). The well-received Slave to the Rhythm consisted of several re-workings of the title track. She maintained parallel recording and acting careers, and modeling work often overshadowed her musical output. Her strong visual presence extended to her concert tours, in her performances, she adopted various personas and wore outlandish costumes, particularly during her years with Goude.

Jones' penchant for working with big-name producers continued on 1986's Inside Story; with production chores handled by Chic's Nile Rodgers, the album spawned one of Jones' last successful singles, "I'm Not Perfect (But I'm Perfect for You)", one of several songs she co-wrote with Bruce Woolley(T Dolby). 1989's Bulletproof Heart (1989) spawned the #1 U.S. Hot Dance Club Play hit "Love on Top of Love" / "Killer Kiss", produced by C+C Music Factory's David Cole and Robert Clivilles. Afterwards Jones seemed to turn her back on her recording career (although 1993 saw the release of a new single, "Sex Drive"), as she again focused primarily on movies, including a role in Eddie Murphy's hit 1992 comedy Boomerang.

Jones recorded two albums during the 1990s but they remain unreleased thus far: in 1994 she was due to release an electro album titled Black Marilyn with artwork featuring the singer as Marilyn Monroe; in 1998 she was scheduled to release an album entitled Force of Nature.Also in 1998 she sang the title track for the film remake of cult TV series The Avengers. The song "Storm" was written and produced by Bruce Woolley, Chris Elliott and Marius DeVries.

Producer Ivor Guest confirmed that Jones had completed recording of her new album in 2007, participants on the new album include Sly and Robbie, Brian Eno, Bruce Woolley, Tricky and Tony Allen. In April 2007, Version2 listed "Corporate Cannibal" as the new video directed by Nick Hooker for Grace Jones. Her new album has now been scheduled for release on 27 October 2008 on Wall of Sound/PIAS Records and is called Hurricane.

Grace Jones - Warm Leatherette ( 80 ^ 94mb)

Released in 1980, Warm Leatherette was the first of three albums produced by Chris Blackwell at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas. The album includes covers of songs by the Normal, the Pretenders, Roxy Music, Smokey Robinson, Tom Petty and Jacques Higelin. After the commercial success of Nightclubbing Island Records re-released the Warm Leatherette album with new artwork, replacing Jean-Paul Goude's original black-and-white studio portrait with pictures of Grace in performance taken from her groundbreaking 1981/82 tour. With the great reggae production duo of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare on this '80 album, she made the transition from straight dance and club act into quasi-pop star with reggae and urban contemporary leaning. The single "Private Life" was one of her best, and the overall album had more energy and production gloss than her previous LPs

Grace Jones - Nightclubbing (81 ^ 91mb)

By all means a phenomenal pop album that claimed the number one slot on NME Album of the Year. Nightclubbing saw Grace Jones working once again with Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, and the remainder of the Compass Point team, providing ideal backdrops for Jones yet again, casting a brisk but not bristly sheen over buoyant structures. Nightclubbing also continues Jones' tradition of picking excellent songs to reinterpret. This time out, the Police's "Demolition Man," Bill Withers' "Use Me," and Iggy Pop's "Nightclubbing" receive radical reinterpretations. The lead-off single for the album was Sting's "Demolition Man", originally written for Grace Jones but also included on The Police's album Ghost in the Machine, later that same year. Nightclubbing also includes the hit single "Pull Up to the Bumper", The album closes with the ballad "I've Done It Again" written by Barry Reynolds, with whom Jones would go on to compose most of the material for 1982 Living My Life.

Grace Jones - Slave To The Rhythm ( 85 ^ 98 mb)

Produced by Trevor Horn (assisted by Stephen Lipson) and released in 1985. The album was written by Bruce Woolley, Simon Darlow, Stephen Lipson and Trevor Horn. Unlike most albums that feature a collection of different songs, Slave to the Rhythm was a concept album that featured several, radical interpretations of the title track, interviews with Jones as well as actor Ian McShane reciting passages from Jean-Paul Goude's biography Jungle Fever. The music ranges from slick R&B runaway grooves to striking audio montages, interrupted occasionally by conversation about Jones's life. Surprisingly well recieved ear candy.
