Blood Brothers is the eighth studio album from Rose Tattoo, whose history dates back to 1977. Coming from Australia, it’s no surprise that Rose Tattoo shares a very similar sound to a better known Australian band, AC/DC. Blood Brothers departs little from the sound of the band’s past work. The album proves that sometimes it’s best to stick with what you know.

Throughout Blood Brothers, Rose Tattoo uses a classic, hard-rock guitar driven sound that seems to be straight out of the 70’s. When combined with snarling vocals of Angry Anderson, the comparison to AC/DC becomes unmistakable. The album lacks the memorable guitar solos that an AC/DC album would have, but it’s still full of undeniably strong rock songs.

Blood Brothers opens with “Black Eyed Bruiser.” The song is a fighter’s anthem and Anderson lives up to his name with vocals like, “If your looking for a heavy time/ Best you don’t come around/ Or else you’ll get something heavy/ Six feet of solid ground.”

“Black Eyed Bruiser” uses a heavy, aggressive guitar part that matches the tone of the vocals. However, at a certain point the riff becomes a little repetitive. It’d be nice to hear Rose Tattoo mix it up a little more on the song. The guitar solo near the end of the track helps to break up the repetitiveness, but it sounds like Rose Tattoo could have extended it a little.

Blood Brothers comes back to aggressive, but repetitive, guitar riffs throughout the album. On songs like “1854,” “Man About Town” and “Sweet Meat” these riffs are instantly attractive, but Rose Tattoo fails to add on to this strong foundation and you’re left wanting a more diverse song.

At other times on the album, Rose Tattoo uses more melodic, picked guitar riffs. On “Slipping Away,” the punchy, rapid, blues-influenced guitar part creates a shamelessly fun rock song. “Creeper” also builds itself on punchy guitar riffs and gets help from strong guitar solos.

The special edition of Blood Brothers also includes a 2006 live performance on DVD that features a couple of the songs off the CD as well as some of the band’s older songs. The DVD proves that Rose Tattoo hasn’t dropped a step live, the music sounds just as aggressive as it does on their studio albums. In fact, Rose Tattoo is more enjoyable on the live DVD than on the studio album, so it’s a nice addition to the CD.

While Rose Tattoo will never share the same success that their fellow countrymen AC/DC have, Blood Brothers is still a solid hard-rock album not to be dismissed. Although the album occasionally suffers from a lack of depth, most of the songs are still enjoyable and bring to mind the sound pioneered by bands like Black Sabbath in the 70’s. Chances are, if you like AC/DC’s new album, you’ll be able to get behind Blood Brothers as well.

Melodic Floyd-like progressive flourishes but with blistering acid guitar, soulful vocals and shimmering keyboards. Crashing riffs and peaceful waves abound. Originally on the same label as Electric Toilet. A good un'.

In 1971 a young man by the name of Myke Jackson (name sound familiar?) composed music, played guitar, and sang his way through this solid recording session of rock music excellence. The self titled "Felt" offered up some progressive rock sounds influenced by the blues. That strong combination gave this LP more than one leg to stand on in a musical sense of the word.

In the year 2000 Akarma Records reissued the forgotten classic to remind us all of the talent of Jackson and his group. As far as I know, this is the only release the group ever had. They made their mark, and impressively, then walked away from it all. Some of the members showed up in different groups over the years to continue their careers (Guitarist Lee would later go on to become a member of the punk band the Dickies in the late '70s).

Progressive rock fans will enjoy the heavy-duty guitar passages and whirling keyboards, while blues fans will hear the emotions and sounds of the blues soaked in every song. For me that was enough to impress, and it kept my attention from beginning to end. If you can feel the music, then consider yourself Felt.

01. Look At The Sun-3:18
02.
Such was the case with last week's edition of What Tom Got Wrong, a new weekly Friday feature on Radio 2 Morning (6 a.m.-10 a.m.) Last week, what Tom got wrong was not putting the wrong emphasis on a word like kilometer (KiloMETRE? kilOMetre? Can never remember), something that really gets up some people's noses. No, it was about a racier mistake. Here's what Anna Ringstrom, a listener/Blog reader had to say:

"Firstly, I'd like to comment on last Friday's 'What Tom Got Wrong,' especially the piece regarding Tom mistakenly using the word 'testicle' instead of 'tentacle,' while talking about the octopus. One of the funniest segments of radio banter I have heard in a long, long while. It goes in the category of 'radio so funny you have to pull the car over to clear the tears from your eyes lest you cause a traffic accident."

Today, Part Two of this edition of What Tom Got Wrong, when Quirks & Quarks' Bob MacDonald drops by to answer the octopus question. (As in, um, do they have em, or not?)

Also don't forget to tune in today for the conclusion of What Do You Think Gordon Lightfoot Should Write About?
Some searing guitar and quite a hard rockin' style with more blues rather than folk influences.

This is an amazing piece of music, more like Iron Butterfly than Iron Butterfly! It lumbers and soars and crashes back to earth. "Stoned Cowboy" is mid tempo powerhouse psychedelia, with not a voice in earshot, thank you! Huge production, a very catchy riff, and an avoidably magnetic performance that uses reverb in a relatively aquatic fashion.

Stoned Cowboy, an instrumental, received considerable airplay in Miami / Detroit at the time and was on heavy rotation on KIMN-AM in Denver.

They were later known as Year One and their first 45 was non-album.

01. And with the economy in the shitter, there will probably be some killer deals come Black Friday. Let's avoid the consumeristic optimism though and get to the point of this post. Tired of spinning the same old tired tracks that you listen to every year around this time? Check out the Verve Remixed Christmas CD.

You might remember me writing about Remixed 4 in June. The theory behind the series is simple. Take classic tracks from the deep Verve catalog and spruce them up by handing them over to some tip-top remix maestros, and abracadabra, you end up with something new. I absolutely loved the 4th volume from first to last and had similar expectations for this Christmas album.

While there are some tracks here that I really dig, like the lead-off track Good Morning Blues (listen below), there are a couple songs, like 'Zat You Santa Claus? (The Heavy Remix), the second track, that just don't do it for me. Ironically it's because not enough is done with it to distinguish it from the original song, which is one of my favorite Christmas tunes. If you're familiar with the source material for these remixes, be prepared for some strong and loose re-workings that really make them pop as something new. That being said, you're parents might not go for these being spun while the family sits around to open presents, but it's a solid collection of classics brought into the 21st century.

Count Basie - Good Morning Blues (The Real Tuesday Weld Clarkenwell Mix) : Verve Remixed Christmas

and the original:

Count Basie & His Orchestra feat. And—as you would expect from these two really smart musicians—they’re really good. C-Bo and M-To could have charged you for this stuff, but they didn’t. So why not go download them? Hmmmm???

They’re Here!

Here’s one of ‘em, but you gotta go see Carrie for the rest:

And here’s the press release, which offers much more insightful commentary than I can give you right now. But there’s a Q&A between the two women over on our good friend Carrie’s NPR blog, Monitor Mix (take the above link).

November 20, 2008; Washington, D.C. – Carrie Brownstein, blogger for NPR Music’s “Monitor Mix” and former guitarist of the critically-acclaimed rock band Sleater-Kinney, is releasing four songs recorded with fellow musician Mary Timony today on NPR Music. Recorded as part of Brownstein and Timony’s side project The Spells in 2000, the previously unreleased songs are now available to hear exclusively at NPR Music, where two tracks are also available the next two weeks for free download: www.npr.org/blogs/monitormix/

As The Spells, Brownstein and Timony recorded eight songs – four that made it to an EP in 2000, and four previously unreleased that are now available on NPR Music: “Bat Vs. Bird,” “Viola,” “Champion Vampire” and “Antarctica.”

Brownstein blogs on “Monitor Mix” that while she and Timony had bigger plans for The Spells, both became busy with bands and tours. “We did, however, manage to start the process,” Brownstein writes “In the summer of 2000, we recorded four songs in a couple of hours, the same amount of time in which we’d written them a few months earlier. If nothing else, making these songs available now is The Spells’ way of finally acknowledging that we aren’t going to get around to finishing the album. “

“Monitor Mix” is one of two NPR Music blogs, and is where Brownstein introduces her favorite music and comments on developments in the industry. Her writing on music has also appeared in The New York Times, pitchforkmedia.com and various book anthologies on music and culture. She is also one-half of ThunderAnt, a comedy duo with Fred Armisen. Brownstein is currently working on her first book of non-fiction.

NPR Music, marking its one year anniversary, features content from NPR and 12 NPR Member public radio stations, as well as original-to-NPR Music features such as live performances, studio sessions, exclusive first listens to forthcoming albums, interviews, reviews and blogs. The site’s continuously expanding sections are dedicated to rock/pop/folk, classical, jazz/blues, world and urban music. NPR Music culls from NPR’s and the stations’ extensive music archives to present thousands of features; more than 240 new features are added to the site every month.

This ain’t your daddies NPR!

Ok, that’s the cheesiest thing I’ve ever typed.
