With the economy on shaky ground and folks feeling edgy, World Music Central has worked especially hard in finding some good deals for our readers. With many retailers looking to make any kind of sale, World Music Central readers can look forward to some decent discounts this season and some deals on shipping. I have included prices on many of these items, but it’s early yet and many retailers are getting nervous. I wouldn’t be surprised to find some super-duper sales knocking down many of these prices and free shipping offers springing up all over the place.

Let’s get started with music and our contributors’ top ten picks.

Our audio equipment picks this year include:

Apple’s iPod Touch, available in the 8, 16 and 32 GB capacities priced at $219.48, $289.48 and $379.48. A pair of concert tickets just might be the perfect gift for those special people in your lives. Giving a gift certificate for some music lessons or maybe some dance lessons also might be an affordable choice and certainly brighten up the cold days of January.

Let me also remind you about those folks who might not be on your list, but who could really use the help. Know that dusting off and donating that old clarinet or guitar in your attic would be a welcomed gift to any school music program. Also, please remember our favorite charities like VH1’s Save the Music Foundation, Freemuse.org and the Music Maker Relief Foundation. These organizations are such good causes and you are such good people, I know that you’ll try to give what you can to keep the music alive.

As always, World Music Central hopes that this guide has pointed you in the right direction for that perfect gift or reminded you to update your own wish list. We hope that you have a safe and wonderful, music-filled holiday season.

Israeli progressive-metal outfit Amaseffer’s debut album Slaves For Life has been in the works since 2004. It’s no surprise that the album took four years to finish, as itis a deeply spiritual and ambitious concept album. Slaves For Life is actually the first of a trilogy of albums that tells the biblical story of Exodus, where the Hebrews, led by Moses, were released from the slavery of the Egyptians after a series of ten plagues. If you’ve read the Bible, you know the story, but Amaseffer presents it in a unique way with the epic songs of Slaves For Life.

To say that the album is strictly a metal album would be a lie. Amaseffer combines pounding metal guitars and drums with huge orchestral arrangements, choirs and instruments that sound straight out of ancient Egypt. Slaves For Life definitely pushes metal to a new level of creativity that’s not often seen.

The album opens with the introductory-track “Sorrow,” where Middle-Eastern flute melodies soar over an acoustic guitar, establishing the sounds that Amaseffer injects into songs throughout Slaves For Life.

From “Sorrow,” the album progresses to the title-track “Slaves For Life.” The song opens with a marching snare drum rhythm combined with a slow-moving orchestral part and vocals that can be compared to the chanting prayer songs of the Middle East. Suddenly, a hard-edged metal sound takes over on guitar and drums. However, Amaseffer adds a sitar part and flute to back these sounds up. Just as you think that “Slaves For Life” is another metal song with an over-blown introduction, Amaseffer drops the song back to just the orchestra and the flowing vocals of Mats Leven.

Later on the track, Amaseffer combines the metal, orchestral and Middle-Eastern influenced-sounds with great success. These sections are unlike anything I’ve ever heard from a metal band and showcase Amaseffer’s creativity.

Amaseffer keeps the balance between delicate orchestral melodies and driving metal riffs throughout Slaves For Life. “Birth Of Deliverance” opens with a beautiful, nearly three minute long, orchestral introduction before strong guitar riffs shock you. Likewise, “Midian” shows the same powerfully creative arrangement. Here, verses composed mostly of sitar and Leven’s vocals give way to a ripping metal section with shrieking vocals, before changing back to acoustic guitar and Leven’s melodic voice.

At other points on Slaves For Life, Amaseffer proves they can go the opposite direction with songs that start with metal riffs and then become orchestral. The rock introductions to “Wooden Staff” and “Ten Plagues” are some of the best parts of the album. On both songs, Amaseffer still holds your attention after the introduction with well-composed orchestral arrangements. “Wooden Staff” also has a shredding guitar solo that compliments the orchestra well.

The only real problem with Slaves For Life is that it can be a bit of an exhausting listen. Most of the songs fall between eight and eleven minutes long, and you might find your patience wearing thin as some of the tracks contain excessively long instrumental sections. However, a fan of true creativity in music will find the beautiful arrangement of the album intriguing, even if you’re not religious.

You have so many elements so uncommon in pop music. You have the complex time signatures of "Good Day Sunshine" and "She Said She Said".

"Eleanor Rigby" classical chamber music with vocals and its in the rare Dorian Mode

"I"m Only Sleeping" uses a planned guitar solo written and recorded backwards

"And Your Bird Can Sing" has the pre-Queen sound of unison twin guitar attack

"For No One" classically influenced song with the use of the ancient instrument of the clavichord.

"I Want to Tell You" a nice quirky song that uses intentional dissonance

"Love You To" the first example of Non Western music form in rhythm, instrumentation and style.

"Tomorrow Never Knows" Harmonically based on Indian Music and classical avant music. It brings classical avant techniques, backward sound collages, tape loops with a upfront drum 'n' bass sound into a listenable pop song. Truly groundbreaking and ahead of its time.

A few weeks ago a Brazilian friend and co-collaborator in the Symphonic Team sent me a copy of the
self titled debut of AGNUS GRAAL and of course placed it in my car's CD. If I have to be honest,
wasn't impressed at all, yes, the band sounded pretty decent and after verifying they were obviously
playing Symphonic Prog, voted for their inclusion, because despite I believed they were a less than
average band, if we want to have the most complete database of Prog bands, they belong here.
Another thing that created some prejudice is that they were presented as a Catholic Prog Band, and
despite I'm a faithful Catholic, I don't believe that music should be used as an instrument of
evangelism, even if I agree with their theological position.
But a few days later (I have a 12 CD player in my car), the album played again, but this time
something had changed, they sounded very good, as a fact the excellent blend of Symphonic and Hard
Prog represents one of the latest tendencies in the first genre, but in this case it didn't sounded forced,
the changes are radical but done with such skills that sound as a natural consequence, so they started
to grow on me.
Even better, when I heard their lyrics (I speak a bit of Portuguese and understand it pretty well as any
Spanish speaker) and found they were not preachy at all, and all the information I found showed that
despite their believes, they are not using them as an instrument to evangelize, something I believe is
very positive.
Now after a couple weeks of intensive listening, I believe that AGNUS GRAAL is a very powerful and
skilled band with a fresh an innovative approach to Symphonic Prog.
Now lets talk about the tracks that impressed me more:
The opener Prelúdio starts with a fantastic organ introduction with a very Baroque atmosphere,
reminding me a bit of Watcher of the Skies, but the similarities end there, first an almost Gregorian
choir adds a strong dose of dramatics, but with great intelligence they soften this almost Canonic sound
with a very nice harpsichord section that leads to a.....DEEP PURPLE inspired couple of chords that turn
the track into an absolutely heavy song with excellent guitar work. Very good beginning for a good
album.
Justiça Ilegal takes the opposite direction, begins with a very hard and well elaborate guitar intro that
leads to the main body of the song in which all the band performs their instruments with great skills,
sadly the vocals are not in the same level, too much oriented towards Rock & Roll of the 50's, but again
when the instrumental breaks begin again, the real strength of the band can be perceived. Special
mention to Antonio Sciamarelli who does an outstanding job with the keyboards.
Visagem begins with a violin solo that leads to the vocals by Sciamarelli, Eduardo Luz and Thiago
Barroso, that this time sounds much better than in the previous song. Visagem is some kind of Power
Ballad with an excellent guitar and keyboards work, until now not a single weak moment.
Canção do Tempo ao Vento starts a bit more experimental than other songs but suddenly the band
takes the Symphonic path again with special mention to Thiago Barroso who does an outstanding bas
job, the haunting vocals blend perfectly with a track that fuses also some sort of Floydian Space rock
with strong guitar work again.
The album ends with Onde a Consciência Era a Lei that starts absolutely Medieval and the vocals in a
troubadouresque style make the perfect match, sounding almost as a narration while an acoustic
guitar, soft Moog and organ back the vocalist, but as usual there's a radical change and again we return
to Heavy territory with an almost IRON MAIDEN oriented passage, reminds me a bit of Rhyme of the
Ancient Mariner. Good closer.
The other songs are almost in the same vein except A Alma do Blues which is not in the same level of
the rest of the album.
To summarize, AGNUS GRAAL is a surprising band that grows on the laudience more and more each
time is listened, excellent addition for any Prog Collection if you don't mind the lyrics in Portuguese.
4 solid stars.

War and destruction certainly pass off their influence onto music, but can a particular landscape in the way it is perceived in the human mind result in a particular kind of music? Is the way one travels across the landscape an influence on the music produced? Could the size of an open sky create a particular genre? I’d like to say that I know the answer to this or that there is an enthnomusicological study out there that proves the point, but, sadly, I have no real answer.

I was thinking on these questions as I was listening to the double-CD set Entre Dunes Et Savanes Desert Blues 3. Beyond the basic framework of the blues or the shared tragedies of war, poverty, oppression and deprivation of these musicians, there is a nebulous quality that ties all this glorious music together. Just as one would recognize the twangy, American Southwest sound found on a movie soundtrack of any western, the desert blues has a quality all its own. Maybe it draws inspiration from an endless sky, or the shifting sands carried on by a warm wind or the loping gait of a camel. All I can say for certain is that the sounds that etched out on Entre Dunes et Savanes Desert Blues 3 are simply dazzling.

Desert Blues 3 opens with a sucker punch delivered by Malian guitarist Djélimady Tounkara on “Fanta Bourama” with its superb guitar lines and dreamy vocals. Now the prevailing thought is that the blues emerged out of the Mississippi Delta region of the United States, but spectacular tracks like “M’Ba Den Ou” by Idrissa Soumaoro, “Humaisa” by Abdoulaye Alhassane Touré and “Izarharh Ténéré” by Tinariwen make me wonder if the blues has more ancient roots. Rai master Khaled digs deep into his Berber sound with his outstanding vocals on “Wahrane, Wahrane.” E

thiopian singer Gigi offers up the moody blues number “”Bati Bati” and the richly worked “Ethiopia.” Rokia Traoré, backed by the Kronos Quartett, casts the listener off into space with her ethereal vocals on “Bownboï.” Other favorites include Toumani Diabaté’s delicately worked kora playing against Ali Farka Touré on guitar and vocals, the smoky vocals on Markus James’s Mississippi Delta number “Dream After Dream” and the soaring vocals of Dhafer Youssef on “A Kind of Love” as he matches the power and beauty of trumpet lines laid down by Markus Stockhausen.

I should also mention the kickass blues vocals by Mauritanian singer Malouma are sure to lay any listener down flat and the wicked licks set down by Ali Farka Touré, with accompanying musicians Mama Sissoko and Bassekou Kouyate on the ngonis and Little George Suref on harmonica, on “Penda Yoro” are alone worth the price of Desert Blues 3.

Bending the blues with koras, ngonis and balaphones, with Tuareg songs, Arab-Andalus rhythms and wholly African blues, Desert Blues 3 breaks the mold of the blues and reshapes the genre into something belonging completely to desert and its peoples – the effect is powerful and sumptuously intoxicating.

Buy the CD:

In North America: Desert Blues 3

In Europe: Desert Blues 3

Did you learn anything in music school? Or does the phrase “circle of fifths” mean nothing to you?

Circle of fifths? I remember that. Never cared for how it sounded, but it looked good on a T-shirt. Kinda like Glam Rock Super-group KISS.

What’s your favorite “bad” piece of music? And briefly justify your crappy taste.

Bad Music? Oooh. I LOVE bad music. There are just too many. I cite three from different parts of my life.

As a pre-school age boy my favorite song was Sam the Sham and the Pharaoh’s “Whooly Bully” played at too high of a speed. Nine years later, Alvin and the Chipmunks released a cover of it. It just didn’t work. It has to be on vinyl, it has to be faster, and God help me, it has to be a sped up Sam Samudio yelling “Watchit now, watchit now, here it comes!”

Violent Femmes’ “Gone Daddy Gone.” I really can’t explain this one. I think it’s the xylophone solo…

Country super group Alabama’s “Dixieland Delight.” I love to play a bossa nova version of this when no one’s around. I get choked up on the lyric “chubby little groundhog.”

Your five-composition-long playlist for Schoenberg would contain:

I have five pieces I wish Schoenberg could have heard:

George Crumb: Ancient Voices of Children

Louis Andriessen: De Stijl

Nine Inch Nails: The Fragile (album)

Monroe Golden: Alabama Places

Roger Miller: Do Wacka Do

I think Schoenberg had some great ideas, but if he had heard works like these it could have opened him up quite a bit. Crumb’s emphasis on beauty, Andriessen’s insistence on groove, Trent Reznor’s emphasis on sonic richness, Golden’s acoustically-ground sound explorations. I think there are many lessons for all of us in Roger Miller’s music.

Congress calls on you to draw up a bailout plan for contemporary music! What do you do?

Bailout plan? Easy. Forgive all student loan debt immediately, and have free universal healthcare. We composers are all sitting on great ideas that our pizza delivery jobs don’t leave time for. Imagine unleashing all that power!

When you inquire individual about philosophy, they would usually give you stares that screaming 'what the Hell are you talking about?' or would begin blabbing about some very ancient and very dead person who wrote the most esoteric and incomprehensible positions of the human race known to humanity. Though much of our current cognition of doctrine stems from these sorts of people, there is no deficiency of philosophers and wise work force in the here and now-a lot of us just don't cognize it yet.

Eschewing the stereotype that a philosopher have to be a deadening old adult male who prates about metaphysics and cosmology are the dad civilization philosophers of our time! They may be better at cracking ill-mannered jokes, toppling edifices or catching flies with chopsticks than authorship a treatise on human nature. Heck a batch of them aren't even existent people. But the wisdom that these people leave is enough for them to be called bonafide modern twenty-four hours philosophers. Just loosen up your criteria a spot will you.

-	The Hulk: Alright so this mammoth greenness monster should may not be the most eloquent, persuasive or intelligent fictional characters around but he makes state us a batch about how our choler should never be contained with is smash-mouth, destructive manner of going about his business. If you follow this philosophy, the best manner to travel about things would be the most straightforward manner imaginable. And to never, ever repress your feelings. Bravo!

-	Angus MacGyver: Now this is more than like it. A adult male that not only became an inspiration of an full coevals but even got a term named after him. Nowadays to 'MacGyver' something is to work out something in a very unique, originative and out-of-the-box manner. Not a bad manner to dwell your life, eh?

-	Forrest Gump: Whoever said that the simplest of us are in fact the wisest must definitely have got had person like Forrest Gump in mind. It's not only his devotedness to the 1 he loves, the manner he manages life's ups and down feathers and his general good cheer that do him an astonishing philosopher. It's the fact that in the end, it is the simplest and most basic things that really matter. And this is exactly what Forrest Gump personifies.

John Bollenberg gathers some of prog's (and particularly neo prog's) biggest names for this consciously ancient sounding release. If you enjoy a celtic or even medieval vibe to your prog, you will probably find "If Only Stones Could Speak" to be to your liking. I am happily in that group.

To get a further idea of what we are dealing with, this collaborative effort features two of Mostly Autumn's main members as well as the venerable Rick Wakeman. Throw in some Roine Stolt, Bjorn Johannsen and Per Lindh to almost complete the picture, but there is something Bollenberg about it...perhaps it is a Flemish sensibility, so that the album avoids the pitfalls of sounding like a musical wrestling match. He tames his assistants to fulfill his own vision rather than theirs, which is admirable given the strong musical personalities involved.

My personal favourites are the very catchy "Ursus Bruggia", which makes me want to snuggle up to the bear, and the genre busting "Cafe Vlissinghe", that incorporates Wakeman's most spirited synths into a traditional sounding yet funky jig, and adds vocals without a misstep. A reference point might be the celtic rock group TEMPEST or even HORSLIPS circa "The Tain", but these are only broad allusions. "No Words" is a haunting piece in which the fate of a man who ostensibly slept around with the queen lies in the hands of the king. Although I love it, I cannot listen to the last few seconds...I won't say more.

"Anna from the Well" has some similarities to "Ursus Bruggia", a gentle celtic melody enhanced by strings both organic and synthesized. In Bollenberg's hands these distinctions do not matter. Sometimes I think of AMAZING BLONDEL as I listen, but this is again just a general allusion. But by "The Story of Three" and "The Goodnight Knight", it seems like some of the same ideas and motifs are being recycled in a less succinct and more meandering manner which I find less appealing but certainly not devoid of merit. It just seems like, given the additional time allotted, there is surprisingly little development. Still pleasant if a bit precious.

Bollenberg has done a good job giving voice to the inanimate and a glimpse into the past on this project that should appeal to folk prog and some neo prog fans.

Christina Carter - Orignal Darkness
Original Darkness ten songs are acrawl with a tangible feeling paranoia; 4am sweat drenched panic and claustrophobia. All to make a very human, pained and what’s life all about album that seems to hypnotise the listening into bleak state

Falkenstein - Heiliger Wald
Falkenstein make offten sombre and ancient tinged yet memorable Germanic folk, this is the southern German collectives first album and it’s wonderfully focused and rewarding bringing to mind the more sombre side Sturmpercht.
