AA.VV.
The Chemical Brothers Remixes

The Chemical Brothers are one of those acts that stand astride trends, fashions and fads.

the age of superstar DJs, superclubs, and dance music’s all-conquering of the mainstream ground might have passed, but Ed Simmons and Tom Rowlands are still managing to pack them in whenever they get behind the decks.

part of that is because in addition to their own mammath catalogue of floorfillers, they are constantly in demand to provide some remix-based credibility to everyone from Kylie to Primal Scream.

HELIOS
Caesura

having been with the label since its very inception, it’s perhaps no surprise that the latest emission from the good ship Type comes care of Massachusetts multi-instrumentalist Keith Kenniff.
after having done a solid job of cooing the world nostalgic with his neo-classical Goldmund project, and now Kenniff’s reverting back to yet another identity to deliver more of his prickly/snuggly soundworlds.
Caesura marks something of a return to form for the Helios account (doing away with the vocals he employed on last year’s mini album Ayres to instead court electronics and post-rock) and the resulting ten tracks could possibly be his strongest collection of meanderings yet.

!K7 Tapes
dj kicks by The Rapture

The Tapes compilation, released by New York electro darlings The Rapture, is a collection of electronic, funk, and straight-up dance music that would (in most circumstances) curdle your blood and send you bolting in the opposite direction.
that said, if you are not familiar with The Rapture, then this might not be your cup of tea: there is a lot of meandering between genres that makes perfect sense.
fans will enjoy this, as a behind-the-curtains peek into the band's collective psyche (and in many ways) an explanation for why their music is the way it is.

CALDER
Lower

Calder formed in Iceland when musical instrument maker Lárus Sigurðsson and Ólafur Josephsson (who is perhaps best known for his recordings under the alias Stafrænn Hákon) met and decided to join forces.
after the creative success of Calder’s debut, a second album was conceived in 2005 when Lárus and Ólafur started exchanging ideas, shaping and moulding their music, with the material composed in a truly collaborative way (Lárus handed Ólafur acoustic melodic ideas and Ólafur added electronic elements) with tracks gradually acquired shape, depth and life.
with this new music, melody, structure and beats have come more to the fore, although the beautiful and haunting guitar atmospherics are still evident, running like a thread through the album.
today we see the completion of this process and it is Lower.

GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT
God Is An Astronaut

six billion years ruling over a little blue planet, or just six of them releasing albums, the shine seems to have worn off a little and the template is oh-so-slightly stale.
although instrumental post-rock darlings God Is An Astronaut have always had a good one to begin with, their fourth self-titled full length finds the band embracing recycling more furiously than the greens, and predictably, the results are a little lackluster.

SHUGU TOKUMARU
Exit

Shugo Tokumaru's Exit is a cheerfully unique release: it takes listeners on a journey with music, telling a story with sound.
far from run of the mill, it offers up something charmingly different: like a fairy tale of tick-tocks, bells, whistles, clinks and the turning of gears, this album is a feast for the ears.

FORWARD, RUSSIA!
Life Processes

for their second album, Leeds-based dance rockers Forward, Russia! have abandoned their own record label Dance to the Radio for the more substantial Cooking Vinyl imprint.
musically, this release sees the band expanding in scale and scope, with sweeping epics and more pulsing rhythms pushed to the fore, broadening their sound with more elaborate instrumentation and bigger choruses.
furthermore, the band here opts for more traditional song titles rather than the simple track-number titles on their debut.
includes the single Breaking Standing.
