For you Big City kids who got a taste of Psychedelphia this week when hometown heroes Icy Demons and Buffalo Stance did a drive-by in Williamsburg, congrats.
But don't think that's gonna stop me from posting about them all over again. Do I have to justify it? The two eclectic hometown acts will be bringing their antics to favorite venue, Johnny Brenda's tonight for a meager ten dollar cover. Plus, if that wasn't freak-friendly enough, the lineup will be rounded out by Make A Rising, more locals who lay the psyche/prog shtick on even thicker.
First a quick recap. I reviewed Icy Demons' Miami Ice for my very first post here a little while back. Since those salad days, Chris Powell (aka Pow Pow, drummer for both the Demons and Man Man) told me in an interview he has no idea what the "canterbury sound" is. I was later vindicated when I played the group's newest release for my fifty-six-year-old father who immediately responded, "Sounds like Caravan and the New Symphonia." Eat that, newjacks! As for anyone confused by Make A Rising's theatrical weirdness, might I point them towards Kime Agine, guitarist/violinist Jesse Moynihan's former weekly cartoon for the Philadelphia Weekly. Its sort of like a Rosetta Stone (or maybe better, a Book of Toth) for the groups' varied interests, both musical and otherwordly. Plus, you'll recognize the costumes. And the music? When Icy Demons brings the funk, Make a Rising brings the King Crimson, and you certainly can't go wrong with that.
