Brasilia International Independent Music Fair 2008 (FMI)

The International Independent Music Fair of Brasilia (Feira Internacional da Msica Independente de Braslia - FMI) is the first music and business fair devoted to the independent recording industry in Brazil, and focuses on the legal and commercial production processes related to the independent music. Taking place in Braslia, DF, Brazil May 7-11, 2008, it is one of the most important events in Brazilian music business and to Brazilian music in general.
The event has taken place since 2005 and has an average attendance of 30,000 people. There are 10 performance areas, and roughly 30 artists perform each year. In the past, artists and businesses from Australia, Belgium, Cape Verde, Czech Republic, England, France, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Portugal and Brazil have participated in this festival. All genres are welcome. Artists will perform for 45 minutes and be provided with accommodations, local transportation, food and technical support. Additionally, artists will be able to sell merchandise.
For four consecutive days, the sound of independent music will fill the capital of Brazil. Braslia, the starting point for many outstanding artists now in the Rio de Janeiro-So Paulo recording circuit, has opened its doors to independent music from all over Brazil and the world, promoting musical regionalization - integrated, but at the same time decentralized. The city, which has become known as the "Capital of (Brazilian) Rock," is expanding its horizons in order to become the center for the independent music scene.
Nearly 30 independent labels, plus specialists, technicians, businesspeople, producers, bands and record distributors will be invited to discuss music production and the national record business. The liberty to produce and distribute music abroad, free from the commercial restrictions and the security of established record labels, has become the preferred option for many well-known Brazilian artists, including Lobo, Maria Bethnia, and Milton Nascimento. They believe that the time has now come to value musicians, renew musical styles, democratize stages, pass the appropriate laws to promote quality music production, educate consumers to new styles and exposing them to new music.
Sponsored by the State Cultural Division of the Federal District Government, by ABMI (Brazilian Association of Independent Music), ABGI (Brazilian Association of Independent Recording Companies), BM&A (Brazilian Music and Arts), the Ministry of Culture, APEX (Agency for Brazilian Promotion and Exportation), and Sebrae, the Independent Music Fair will stage a debate concerning basic questions as to the development of the independent recording industry and its professionalization.
In addition, the public can attend workshops and lectures led by specialists and prominent professionals from the recording industry. Other attractions presented to the public include sales stands, pocket shows featuring both local and national artists, opening and closing parties, a food and drinks area, and more. Various showcases are broadcast live by Radio Nacional FM.
