Holographic Universe is the third full-length album for the Swedish group Scar Symmetry. It's the first I've heard of the band but after many listens to Holographic Universe I will definitely seek out the other two releases. I loved the style of melodic death metal that these Swedes crank out. It's the type of metal that I love to listen to over and over again.
For someone who hasn't gotten into the "melodic death metal" there is nothing to be afraid of. Think of it as Accessible Death Metal. It's kind of like the dual vocal punk/hardcore where you've got some heavy growling (cookie monster) vocals and some really, really good singing. The musicianship is just downright amazing. The guitarists are always top notch with some mindblowing guitar antics. Drumming is breakneck for a lot of the time but again, the drummers manage to make the music approachable. Scar Symmetry looks more to the futuristic landscape for song material as opposed to the traditional death and doom. It's a nice change as well.
Curious? Check out Scar Symmetry for a starting point. It's an easy album to listen to and a great demonstration of what the genre is capable of. I know I get tired of listening to cookie monster vocals for an entire album, but I do enjoy them. It's nice to have the variety. Yet another great heavy album for 2008, turning out to be an amazing year for metal albums.
