I tend to think of compilation albums as entry points. They're there so that lazy people (like myself) don't
have to buy all of a certain artists' albums since all of the 'best' works are on just a one/two CD set. Not
being an owner of a whole lot of Pink Floyd albums, I believe that for the most part, this was a decently
compiled album barring some editing issues. I would prefer to hear 'Echoes' and 'Marooned' in their
entirety, and already having heard 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond', I'm sad that part 8 isn't included.I know diehard Pink Floyd fans will hate the album for not including stuff from 'lesser-known' albums such as ATOM HEART MOTHER and UMMAGUMMA, but I don't believe ECHOES was meant to please the absolute diehard fan. It's meant for the casual fan who has heard their songs on the radio but is unsure which studio album should be an entry point for them. Whether or not money was involved is up to the listener.
In summation, three stars. Not for the Pink Floyd choir, but worth it for casual fans.
Last words: If this review seems dry, it's because I want to wait until I get the studio albums before
making any comments about actual songs themselves. The next review will be more epic, though. Stay
tuned.
