A recent article in The Brooklyn Rail featured an article on Cuban bass playing, featuring the two great icons of the music, Israel “Cachao” Lopez & Andy Gonzalez. The article briefly covers Cachao’s background and features some quotes from Gonzalez; it also features some insight into Gonzalez’s career. It’s a good read - check it out HERE.

Summer is right around the corner and that means we can expect to see a wealth of jazz festivals coming our way. While many festivals include Latin Jazz, we rarely see a purely Latin Jazz festival. Chicago LJC readers are in luck this summer though as the JIC’s JazzCity Series presents their Latin Jazz festival. This free event will happen on Friday, July 11th at 7:00 p.m. Featured artists will include Carlos Garcia’s Cuatrissimo, vocalist Nythia Rivera, and Jose Papo Santiago’s Infraverde. The festival will be held at the Humboldt Park Boathouse - 1359 N. Sacramento Avenue, Chicago, IL. Latin Jazz fans in Chicago - start planning now! If you’re going, let me know, I’d love to hear some feedback on the event!
