Native - Just Four [2008]
Native Link 2
The greatest album so far from Native -- a warmly jazzy set from this hip Japanese combo, put together with an even more solid sound than before! Native have a great way of balancing rhythmic drive with instrumental sensitivity -- much more so than some of their contemporaries, like Soil & Pimp Sessions or Quasimode -- and often with a sense of tone and color that take us back to the 60s albums that clearly inspire them. Instrumentation is mostly acoustic, save for a bit of Fender Rhodes -- and the group features some especially great work on alto, soprano sax, and flute from Tomoyoshi Nakamura -- alongside piano/keyboards, bass, and drums. Titles are all originals, and really well written -- and tunes include "Mirage", "The Edge Of Daylight", "Just Four", "Spiral Insight", "Confession", and "Get Along In My Life"
