Alphabet Soup (T) reposte
2008-09-16 01:11:00 by Rho in Rho-Xs

Hello, what can i say the whole Alphabet Soup (T) page has been taken down by persons or techglitches unknown..certainly not deleted by me..most odd so here's a reposte

Hello Alphabet Soup II is on the T today, and i'll tell you upfront the third hit is a wonderful birdie. Before all that, a band that rocked the seventies, the lads loved them, and even when it all ended in tears, in the midseventies Jimmy the weed didnt sound too ominous. Johnny the Fox was a good follow up on their Jailbreaktrough..they didnt ponder but went ahead..Another band that keeps on rollin' , and that is immensely popular in their native Canada, is Tragically Hip. They have never found real mainstream success in the United States which tells you something about how out of touch with the true american spirit they've become over there. Now current rightwing Canadian politicians are slowly but surely selling out Canada to the multinational corperations that have decided to unify the continent, wake up Canadians before its too late....finally that wonderful birdie, first time she shared her wonderful voice was on Tricky's classic Maxinquaye and Martina was an important part of its success. Just 17 at the time, a few years later Tricky had knocked her up but by 98 the relationship was on the rocks. Topley-Bird took the necessary time to start a comeback in 2002, and in 2003 she delivered Quixotic, a ‘pop-noir’ album with psychedelic pop on which she let's her gorgeous voice range all the way.....

Thin Lizzy - Johnny The Fox (76 ^ 85mb)

Thin Lizzy was founded in late 1969 in Dublin, Ireland, by Lynott, guitarist Eric Bell, electric organist Eric Wrixon and drummer Brian Downey. Wrixon was gone by early 1970, and tiring of the limited possibilities in Dublin, the group relocated to London in 1971.Signing a contract with Decca Records, Thin Lizzy's first hit came in 1973, with "Whiskey in the Jar", a version of a traditional Irish song. However, the group initially had problems matching the success of "Whiskey..."

Bell left, and was replaced by Gary Moore who left too, Lynott and Downey regrouped, recruiting Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson as guitarists to make what was arguably the classic Thin Lizzy lineup.Fighting (1975) was their first album success(TL's 5th album), however the following album, Jailbreak, was their breakthrough, to this day the boys are back in time gets good air time on classic rock stations.Jailbreak is a tremendous effort from the band, Phil Lynott providing solid bass work along with his sly "ghetto" vocal, the incessant rhythmic rolling of drummer Brian Downey, a range of song styles that is rare for any artist from any decade, and of course.....there's Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson with guitar clash acrobatics throughout. A truly amazing record through and through. Johnny the Fox, delivered the same year as its predecessor, did pale somewhat in comparison. However, what's interesting about Johnny the Fox is that it's hardly a rote repetition of Jailbreak but instead an odd, fitfully successful evolution forward. All the same strengths are still here -- the band still sounds as thunderous as a force of nature, Phil Lynott's writing is still graced with elegant turns of phrase, his singing is still soulful and seductive.

During the late 1970s and early 80s, Thin Lizzy played to a rabid fanbase but was unable to break into mainstream markets. Their live shows were no-nonsense, no special effects affairs relying purely on the music and Lynott's rapport with the fans. Their critically acclaimed Live and Dangerous has been called one of the best live albums ever. After a farewell tour in 1984, Lynott dissolved Thin Lizzy and focused on his solo career. Lynott continued his solo career, which he had begun while still with the group with the album Solo in Soho, yielding several hits, and "Yellow Pearl" (used in the early 80s as the theme tune for the BBC programme Top of the Pops-see Midge Ure). Lynott died in January 1986, a victim of drug abuse. The remaining members of Thin Lizzy (John Sykes and Scott Gorham, Brian Downey declined ) reunited in 1999 for a European tour and live album, currently, as of 2006, touring the UK and Ireland. They will support Deep Purple again in April and May of 2007 for their UK tour.

The Tragically Hip - Fully Completely (92 ^ 99mb)

Formed in 1983 in Kingston, Ontario, the Tragically Hip came together with childhood friends Gordon Downie (vocals), Bobby Baker (guitar), Paul Langlois (guitar), Gord Sinclair (bass), and Johnny Fay (drums). While performing Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern, MCA Records president Bruce Dickinson was impressed by the Hip's infectious live presence and offered them a deal. A self-titled eponymous EP appeared in 1987, but it took the band two years to get critical attention. On their first full album, 1989's Up to Here, Downie's powerful songcraft was blossoming, and the College charts were instantly attracted and fellow Canadians were appreciative of the Tragically Hip's insatiable appeal. Known for their energetic live performances, the band is noted for their improvisational renditions of songs. Lead singer Downie often strays from the song lyrics to rant to the audience or wander off into fictitious monologues and conversations.

Road Apples, issued in 1991, was moderately successful; however, the band's third album, Fully Completely (1993), allowed for international crossover. It was the first Hip album to reach #1 on the RPM Top 100 albums chart, and was certified diamond in Canada in January 2007. It was released in October 1992, and it shows Tragically Hip come to the apex of their talent. Lead singer Gord Downie sounds crisp and full of life, and the songs he verbally dramatizes are rich in lyrical sharpness and instrumental color. With more than half of this album's songs being released to Canadian radio, it established the Hip as a mainstream contender and rescued them from their bar band persona. The Tragically Hip prove here that their level of maturity and musical craftsmanship . The album is considered by the Hip's fans as one of their best , a classic Canadian album, many of the songs are still played in regular rotation on various formats of Canadian radio. The cover art was designed by Dutch artist Lieve Prins. Prins, an "electrographer" who makes art with photocopiers, had the band photocopy various parts of their bodies and then made a collage with the results. The original wall-sized piece is currently on display at The Bathouse Recording Studio.

They continued with a steady rise for 1995's somber storm, Day for Night, and their star power was burgeoning. Sold-out tours across Canada and Midwest America and a spot on Saturday Night Live catupulted the vibrance of "Grace, Too" onto modern rock charts. The Tragically Hip were becoming an anthemic band among the split indie and rock crowds, practically on the verge of being an arena attraction. Trouble at the Henhouse, their first for Atlantic, was blistering with similar passion of Day for Night, but released too closely to the previous effort. The Hip trudged on, selling out countless dates in North America. Downie, who was also a poetic madman, composed a frenzied stage presence and the band's tight rhythm was infectious. The mix of roots rock and light country tinges was something tangible for the mid-'90s grunge reign. While touring in support of Trouble at the Henhouse, the Hip recorded their first-ever live album, Live Between Us (1997). This particular album captured an astonishing night at Detroit's Cobo Arena in 1996 and was uncut and unfearing. The band was at the top of its game, the rest of the '90s were a time of rest, but also a period when the band returned to basics of true rock & roll grit.

Phantom Power (1998), the band's sixth studio album, eighth overall, marked their most cohesive work to date. It was also their debut for Sire Records. The album was recorded in the band's hometown of Kingston and the songs themselves were cathartic and seductive. "Fireworks" and "Poets" were again mainstays on college radio. The next year, Gordon Downie put his pen to paper for a book of poetry and a solo album, entitled Coke Machine Glow. Downie returned to the studio in 2001 to join his bandmates for another Hip record. Producer Hugh Padgham was also on board to tweak the Tragically Hip's ninth record, In Violet Light, issued in June 2002. In Between Evolution, the band most instrospective work yet, followed in summer 2004. The following year saw the release of Hipeponymous, a limited-edition box set that included the two-disc greatest-hits compilation Yer Favorites and the live DVD That Night in Toronto.. Fellow Canadian and famed producer Bob Rock signed on for the Hip's 11th studio LP, World Container. In support of the album, the band played concert dates in major Canadian cities, then as an opening act for The Who on several US dates. A tour of Eastern Canada, Europe, and select cities in the United States occurred late in the year. .The Hip have been recording at The Bath House Recording Studio in Ontario for an upcoming album due out later this year...

Martina Topley-Bird - Quixotic (03 ^ 99mb)

The woman Vibe referred to as "the black Dietrich of Soul" grew up in London and went to schools that were mostly white and middle class. Being the odd one out suited Martina just fine; in fact, it was an environment she thrived in. A chance meeting with Tricky led to a relationship, both romantic and musical. Martina's ethereal voice mixed well with Tricky's gruff style, sounding like a siren calling listeners into a dark world. She played a large role on Tricky's debut, Maxinquaye, along with the follow-ups Nearly God and Pre-Millennium Tension.
Following a falling-out of their professional and mostly personal relationship in 1998, she began pursuing a solo career. She spent most of 2002 working on her debut, producing it herself with some help from Tricky and Alex McGowan, and with guest appearances from DJ/producer David Holmes, Kyuss guitarist Josh Homme, and former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan. It was not until 2003 that she released her debut album Quixotic on Independiente Records, upon its release, it received rave reviews from critics and was a finalist for the 2003 Mercury Music Prize. The song "Sandpaper Kisses" from the album was featured in the video game Fahrenheit (released in North America as Indigo Prophecy).

The album finally saw a release, of sorts, in the United States in July 2004 when the Palm Pictures label released a re-designed and re-sequenced version with a new title (Anything), a trimmed-down tracklisting and all-new cover art. No reasons given, but it wasnt an improvement or a success...bad idea from Chris Blackwell's stable. Quixotic showcases both Topley-Bird's range and her gorgeous voice, its stylistic shifts make for a engaging listen. Martina is an absolutely first-rate musical and vocal chameleon. who carries the album's eclecticism superbly.

She appeared on the Sweetheart 2005 compilation by Starbucks featuring cover love songs. She sang I Only Have Eyes for You, a song by The Flamingos. Her second solo album, The Blue God, was released in May 2008. It was recorded with maverick, visionary producer Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley) and mixes bopping beats with an innocent, whispering vocal style with dark, bittersweet lyrics. The track "Carnies" was released as the first single on 3 March 2008 and reached No.20 on the UK Indie Charts. "Poison" was released as the second single and reached No.9 on the Indie Charts.

The term ‘pop-noir’ and psychedelic pop are the best to describe this sound. Martina's display of range, talent, and charm suggests that she has an endless well of creativity at her disposal and is most likely destined for greater things...
