Until just recently, I had two huge misconceptions about experimental-folk singer Benoît Pioulard: 1). That he didn’t live in Portland and 2). That he was actually French. It turns out that Pioulard (the nom du rue of songwriter Thomas Meluch) doesn’t reside in Marseille, but instead in our very own little town. With a brand new record, Temper, coming out next week on Kranky (home to local troublemakers Valet and White Rainbow as well as the psychedelic doo-wop of Deerhunter), Pioulard’s released a new and supposedly mysterious video for his song “Ragged Tint.” Frolicking around in a field, the video does a nice job capturing the frantic, rapidly plucked chords of the track. I won’t spoil the surprise at the end, but let’s just say something happens with that lil ol’ magic box he stumbles on. Check tomorrow’s print edition of WW for Nilina’s profile on the fake-Frenchman.
