No Ordinary Monkey more fun than the line for The Breeders

grandparty2.jpgThough I waited 40 minutes in line yesterday to see The Breeders, I finally gave up and headed for the water. The line for The Breeders' free show at Williamsburg's McCarren Pool (with openers Matt and Kim) stretched a ridiculous three blocks, winding from the pool's entrance all the way down Lorimer St, Driggs Ave and Manhattan Ave.

Nearby at Williamsburg's Grand Ferry Park, however, people lounged comfortably in the grass, enjoying the music of DJs Carlos Arias, Phil South and Anton Esteban (aka No Ordinary Monkey of Golf Channel Recordings). After standing around with hundreds of others in the baking sun, the scene on Grand St was a more than welcome sight.

The DJs' set featured mostly up-tempo Balearic beats, heavy on the disco, all a definite nod to 80s Ibiza. Basically perfect for the sunny weather and the park's waterfront views of the Manhattan skyline. One of my favorite tracks of the day was a remix of Blondie's "Call Me" that always teased the chorus but never actually got there. Other tracks featured some very proggy guitar from (I think) Roy Buchanan's late 70s classic "You're Not Alone", and either "Saudade (Bakazou remix)" by Belgian group Arsenal or "Alpha Storm (An-2 Remix)" by Maxim Samos. Regardless, if you like to dance, these are definitely worth a listen.

The music, the atmosphere and the lemonade vodkas sold on the premises (barely any lines for these, either) let us all while away the Sunday afternoon in style. The next free concert at McCarren Pool, The Liars, is this Sunday, and it's too bad DJs Carlos, Phil and Anton won't be spinning again to save me from standing in line all over again.
